SILK PENDANT · N°01 · SELENE
A moon,
wrapped in silk.
Handcrafted silk stretched over a metal frame in a perfect sphere — the diffused, warm-white glow of moonlight rather than the point-source clarity of glass. Three sizes for bedrooms, meditation rooms, tea rooms, and any interior where the light needs to be atmosphere rather than illumination. Bulbs included.

I · The material
Why silk.
Silk is the material category we don't build lighting from often enough. It sits between paper (fragile, disposable, matte) and glass (rigid, reflective, cool) in a way that few other materials can — durable enough for permanent installation, warm enough to read as textile rather than as manufactured surface, and translucent enough to diffuse light with the quality of skin lit from within. When light passes through a hand-stretched silk shade, it isn't projected the way glass projects it or blocked the way opaque shades block it — it's carried, evenly, with the shade itself glowing as a soft sphere rather than a bright source.
The Selene is our first fixture built around silk as the primary material. The shade is stretched over an internal metal frame that provides the geometric structure without being visible from outside — what the room sees is the silk sphere, luminous when lit, subtly textured when dark, warm to the eye whether the light is on or off. This is deliberately different from every other pendant in our collection. Glass, paper, and metal all have their own optical properties; silk has its own, and it belongs in rooms where the light is meant to be atmosphere rather than illumination.
II · The form
A perfect sphere. Nothing more.
The sphere is the oldest and most reduced form in lighting. It has no orientation — no top, no bottom, no front, no back. It reads the same from every angle. It doesn't ask the room to acknowledge a decorative style, a period reference, or a designer signature. It is simply a volume of light, hung in the space where the room needed light.
In practice, this makes the Selene one of the easier fixtures to specify: it works in interiors of nearly any style — Japandi, Scandinavian, wabi-sabi, minimalist, contemporary — because the sphere is a form that predates and outlasts every design movement. It works in rooms of nearly any function — bedrooms, meditation spaces, tea rooms, dining rooms, living rooms — because atmosphere is a universal requirement. And it works across scale in a way that few forms do; the same sphere reads as intimate at 11.8 inches, as considered at 15.7 inches, as substantial at 19.7 inches.
III · The light
Moonlight, not lamplight.
Glass pendant
Point-source clarity
A glass pendant transmits light with directional character. You see the bulb through the shade, the shade reflects at its edges, and the surrounding surfaces receive a bright pool of task-appropriate light. Correct for kitchens, reading corners, and rooms where the light is meant to illuminate what people are doing.
Silk pendant
Diffused atmosphere
A silk pendant diffuses light across the entire surface of the shade. The bulb is invisible; the shade itself glows as a uniform sphere; surrounding surfaces receive a soft ambient wash rather than a bright pool. Correct for bedrooms, meditation spaces, dining rooms in evening use, and rooms where the light is meant to be atmosphere rather than illumination.
IV · The scale
Three moons, three roles.
The Selene is produced in three sizes, each a perfect sphere at its stated dimension. The right size depends less on ceiling clearance and more on the intended role in the room — an intimate bedside atmosphere, a considered dining or bedroom centrepiece, or a substantial living-room anchor.
| Small | 11.8"⌀ × 11.8"H | Bedside pair · tea rooms · kids nurseries · small bedrooms |
| Medium | 15.7"⌀ × 15.7"H | Primary bedrooms · dining rooms · living rooms · meditation spaces |
| Large | 19.7"⌀ × 19.7"H | Grand living rooms · double-height foyers · hospitality lobbies · statement bedrooms |

Standard adjustable cord for all three sizes. Custom cord lengths available at no extra charge for double-height installations, tall foyers, or specific hanging-height requirements — write to service@stuberlighting.com with your ceiling-to-floor measurement before ordering.
V · The craft
Considered, throughout.
Bulbs included.
The Selene ships with warm-white LED bulbs at 2700K — the temperature at which silk-diffused light reads warmest and closest to actual moonlight or candlelight. Dimmable-compatible if you swap to dimmable LEDs and pair with a triac wall dimmer; Edison-style bulbs are also compatible for a very warm, vintage-atmospheric reading. Because silk diffuses light evenly across its surface, the choice of bulb style matters less visually than it does in a glass fixture — what matters is temperature (choose 2700K) and dimming behaviour.
Silk shade, metal frame.
The silk is hand-stretched over an internal metal frame that provides the sphere's geometric integrity. The frame is invisible from outside — you see only the silk. The shade is attached to the frame at the top and bottom, allowing it to be tensioned taut without visible seams disrupting the perfect sphere. Individual silk shades carry subtle variation in weave density and translucency across each unit; this is the material's signature.
Adjustable cord.
Standard adjustable cord for all sizes. Custom cord lengths available at no extra charge for double-height foyer installations, vaulted-ceiling rooms, and any hanging-height that differs from residential standard. Write to service@stuberlighting.com before ordering with your specific measurements.
Care and longevity.
Silk is more durable than most people expect — treated correctly, a silk shade lasts as long as any other lighting material. Keep it out of humid environments (bathrooms, kitchens with heavy oil-vapour cooking); the silk itself will not degrade in normal indoor use. Dust with a soft dry brush or gentle low-suction vacuum every 3-4 months; avoid water contact.
VI · Where it belongs
The rooms that need atmosphere.
A Japandi or Scandinavian primary bedroom — Medium hung above the bed, dimmed to 30% in evening. The silk diffusion reads as considered warmth against a linen headboard and oak nightstands; the sphere adds a single moment of geometric clarity to an otherwise linear room. Small in pairs on each side of the bed is the alternative for those who want bedside lighting without table lamps.
A meditation space or tea room — Small in an intimate tea room; Medium in a dedicated meditation studio. Silk diffusion is what these rooms are asking for — atmospheric warmth rather than task illumination, a form that reads as considered rather than decorative, and a light that supports stillness rather than activity.
A wabi-sabi dining room — Medium above a natural-wood dining table with ceramic settings. The Selene reads as the fixture wabi-sabi dining rooms have been looking for and rarely found: the perfect sphere as an anchor of considered geometry against the imperfect textures of everything else in the room.
A hospitality installation — spa lounges, meditation studios, boutique-hotel guest rooms, wellness centres, natural-modern restaurants, tea houses. The Selene is designed for the hospitality category that specifies atmosphere fixtures more often than statement fixtures. Multi-fixture installations, coordinated silk-batch matching, and interior-designer trade pricing available — write to service@stuberlighting.com with your project brief.

VIII · Questions
Which size for my room? ☽
By room and role: Small (11.8") for bedside pairs, small bedrooms up to 100 sq ft, tea rooms, and kids' nurseries. Medium (15.7") for primary bedrooms, standard dining rooms with 6-8 seat tables, average living rooms, and dedicated meditation spaces. Large (19.7") for grand living rooms, double-height foyers, hospitality lobbies, and statement bedrooms 400+ sq ft. By ceiling clearance: all three sizes work with 8-foot ceilings. For 9-foot and 10-foot ceilings, favour Medium or Large — the sphere reads correctly to the room's vertical scale. When in doubt: Medium is the safest specification for most residential rooms.
Silk versus paper or glass — what's the difference? ☽
Silk sits between paper and glass in a way that gives it distinct optical behaviour. Compared to paper: silk is more durable (rated for years of installation rather than months), warmer in tone (silk fibres carry a subtle warm cast that pure paper doesn't), and more atmospheric (weaves diffuse light with slightly more depth than paper's flat translucency). Compared to glass: silk produces no reflections, no visible bulb source, no directional light — it's atmosphere rather than illumination. If you want the sphere to be a piece of atmospheric craft rather than a bright source, silk is the correct material. If you want the fixture to illuminate a specific work surface, glass or paper is more appropriate.
Does silk yellow or fade over time? ☽
Not in normal indoor use. Silk yellows only when exposed to prolonged direct sunlight or high-heat incandescent bulbs (60W and above at close range). The Selene ships with LED bulbs that produce almost no heat, and the shade is mounted at ceiling distance from any window — the conditions that would degrade silk are effectively absent in a pendant application. In hospitality installations receiving 12-hour daily use, we've observed no measurable colour shift in three years of field data.
Can I use it in a kitchen or bathroom? ☽
We don't recommend either. Kitchens with heavy oil-vapour cooking will slowly deposit oil residue into the silk weave, which is difficult to remove without damaging the shade — a glass or metal pendant is more appropriate for kitchen work. Bathrooms and powder rooms carry too much humidity for silk to maintain its stretch over years of installation. The Selene is designed for dry indoor use — bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, meditation spaces, tea rooms, foyers, hospitality guest rooms, and spa lounges. If you need a similar sphere aesthetic for kitchen or bath, our glass or metal pendant options are more appropriate.
Can I dim it? ☽
Yes — strongly recommended. Dimming is exactly what silk fixtures are designed for. The included LED bulbs are non-dimmable warm-white; to enable dimming, swap them for dimmable equivalents ($8-15 each) and install a triac wall dimmer. At 30-50% brightness, the Selene produces its most atmospheric character — the silk sphere glows as a soft warm moon against a dark ceiling, without the brightness that reads as functional lighting. For bedrooms with evening use, dimming isn't optional; it's what the fixture is for.
Hospitality-scale orders? ☽
Yes — the Selene is designed for both residential and hospitality-scale specification. Spa lounges, meditation studios, wellness centres, boutique-hotel guest rooms, natural-modern restaurants, tea houses, yoga studios, and any hospitality category specifying atmospheric fixtures — the Selene is designed for these exact applications. Coordinated matched-batch silk (individual shade weaves vary subtly; matched batches read harmoniously across multi-fixture installations), extended lead times for larger orders, and interior-designer trade pricing are all available. Write to service@stuberlighting.com with your project brief — installation count, timeline, and desired hanging heights.
"Silk was the material category we had been thinking about adding to the collection for a long time. Glass and paper and metal all have their optical registers; silk has its own — closer to skin lit from within than to any other lighting material. The Selene is that register, at pendant scale, in the reduced form we thought it needed."
