SILK · N°08 · CLUSTER CEILING

A 1947 silhouette,
flush to the ceiling.

The mid-century bubble tradition adapted for flush-mount installation — the same crisscross steel wireframe, the same silk-diffused warm glow, now sitting close to the ceiling instead of hanging as a pendant. Four sizes for bedrooms, dining rooms, kitchens, and hospitality-scale spaces. The wireframe pattern casts a geometric crisscross shadow when lit — the fixture's signature and the reason the silhouette has held for nearly eighty years.

A design tribute

Honest about the lineage.

The bubble-lamp silhouette was originated in 1947 by an American mid-century designer working with hand-welded steel wire and a stretched silk cover — a technique borrowed from military materials of the period and applied to residential lighting for the first time. The result became one of the most enduring silhouettes in twentieth-century design: a soft translucent volume of warm light held either as a pendant or, in this variant, flush to the ceiling. The crisscross wireframe geometry has been the fixture's signature since day one.

The Perla Cluster Ceiling is a design tribute to that mid-century tradition — not an authentic reproduction of any specific designer's licensed piece, but a faithful reinterpretation of the visual language that made the form iconic. We produce it because the form deserves accessible-priced options and because the ceiling-flush variant opens installation possibilities that pendant versions don't. If you require certified-authentic mid-century reproductions, licensed originals are available from &Tradition and Modernica at significantly higher price points.

The signature

A crisscross of shadow.

Look up at the Perla Cluster Ceiling when it's turned on. What you see is not a smooth luminous sphere — it's a soft warm glow crisscrossed by fine geometric lines, the shadows of the wireframe visible through the silk cover. The pattern reads architectural rather than random: precise, repeating, deliberately geometric. This is the fixture's signature and the reason the silhouette has been continuously produced since 1947.

Other silk ceiling fixtures — including our own Nimbus and Fiora — use hidden internal frames so the shade reads as pure silk with no visible structure. The Perla Cluster deliberately does the opposite. The wireframe is visible through the silk because the wireframe geometry is part of the fixture's design intent.

The engineering

Steel that keeps its shape.

The lightweight steel wireframe is precision-engineered to hold its geometric silhouette even when tension is applied by the stretched silk cover. Hand-welded at every intersection, the frame does two things simultaneously: it maintains structural rigidity across the wide diameters (the 31.4-inch XL spans nearly a metre), and it produces the crisscross shadow pattern that defines the fixture visually.

The silk cover — premium natural silk fabric — is stretched taut across the wireframe and secured at the perimeter. Subtle mesh texture and gentle wrinkles across the silk surface are the material's natural signature, not defects; they're what natural silk does when stretched over a geometric frame.

Four sizes

Choose by room, not by taste.

Small

15.7"⌀ × 7.9"H

3 × E26 · ~16W each

Bedrooms, hallways, entry corridors, and any room where the fixture needs to feel intentional but not statement-scaled. Correct for standard 8-ft ceilings; low 7.9-inch profile preserves head clearance without compromising visual weight.

Medium

19.7"⌀ × 9.1"H

3 × E26 · ~16W each

The residential proportional size — standard bedrooms, average-sized living rooms, kitchen islands, 4-6-seat dining rooms, mid-century modernist interiors. The specification most residential rooms want.

Large

23.6"⌀ × 9.8"H

3 × E26 · ~16W each

Statement residential — primary bedrooms with king beds, generous living rooms, 6-8-seat dining tables, and rooms where the fixture is meant to hold the ceiling's centre of visual gravity.

XL · statement

31.4"⌀ × 11"H

5 × E26 · ~24W each

Double-height foyers, hotel lobbies, restaurant statement installations, showroom spaces, and any application where the fixture should read as architectural rather than decorative. Uses 5 bulbs for even light distribution across the wide diameter.

Rooms

Where the Perla Cluster Ceiling belongs.

Mid-century modern living rooms.

The primary specification — Medium or Large, centred above the seating group. The crisscross wireframe geometry reads as the design language the room was built for; the silk-diffused warm glow reads as the evening atmosphere the tradition intends. Pair with walnut credenzas, Eames-era seating, restrained-palette upholstery.

Dining rooms.

Medium above 4-6-seat tables, Large above 6-8-seat, XL above oversized tables (8+ seats) or double-height dining spaces. Flush-mount at 8-9-inch profile means the fixture sits close to the ceiling — eye-lines across the table are preserved without a pendant hanging into the space.

Bedrooms & kitchens.

Small in average bedrooms, Medium in primary bedrooms and kitchens. Flush-mount is the correct ceiling deployment for both — bedrooms want ceiling clearance for headboard sight-lines; kitchens want fixtures out of the working plane above islands and prep areas.

Hospitality & commercial statement.

XL in hotel lobbies, restaurant flagship rooms, showroom spaces, coworking meeting areas — mid-century-forward hospitality projects where architectural silk is the specification. Multi-fixture cluster installations (staggered heights across a large ceiling plane) available as bespoke coordination.

Questions

Is this an authentic Nelson Bubble Lamp?

No — we are transparent about this. The Perla Cluster Ceiling Lamp is a design tribute to the mid-century bubble tradition originated in 1947, produced with the same crisscross steel-wire and stretched-silk technique that gives the form its optical character. It is not an authentic licensed reproduction of the original designer's piece, which is available from &Tradition (the official licensee) at significantly higher price points and with authentic-piece certification. If you require certified-authentic mid-century reproductions for a design-conscious application, we recommend purchasing from the licensed source. If the visual language of the tradition matters more than certified authenticity, the Perla Cluster is our answer at accessible price.

Are the wrinkles and mesh texture in the silk a defect?

No — they're the material's natural signature. When premium silk fabric is stretched over the geometric steel wireframe, the fibres compress at intersection points and settle into subtle wrinkle patterns across the surface. Fine mesh texture is visible under close inspection. Both are what natural silk does when applied to a wireframe structure; both were present on the original 1947 fixtures and every subsequent generation of the design. If you're used to machine-manufactured smooth-surface lampshades, the Perla Cluster's texture will read as more handcraft, more considered, and more consistent with the mid-century artisan tradition the fixture references.

Which size for my room?

Small (15.7") — hallways, entry corridors, secondary bedrooms, powder rooms. Medium (19.7") — the residential proportional default: standard bedrooms, average living rooms, 4-6-seat dining rooms, kitchen islands under 5 feet. Large (23.6") — primary bedrooms, generous living rooms, 6-8-seat dining, statement kitchen islands. XL (31.4") — double-height foyers, oversized dining rooms (10+ seats), hospitality lobbies, commercial statement installations. When uncertain in residential contexts, Medium is almost always the right specification. When uncertain in commercial contexts, err larger — XL reads architectural rather than decorative.

Perla Cluster Ceiling vs Nimbus vs Fiora — which silk ceiling fixture?

All three are flush-mount silk ceiling fixtures; the aesthetic registers are entirely different. Perla Cluster Ceiling is a mid-century modern design tribute — visible crisscross wireframe pattern reads as geometric and architectural, best for mid-century interiors and hospitality-scale spaces. Nimbus is a pure asymmetric silk cloud — no visible frame, no geometric pattern, reads as sculptural and quiet, best for Japandi and minimalist bedrooms. Fiora is a pleated-silk cloud with a walnut wood centre — Japandi/wabi-sabi register with visible texture and warm wood accent, best for bedrooms and nurseries. Choose Perla Cluster for design-tribute mid-century tradition; Nimbus for silent minimalism; Fiora for warm textural Japandi.

Can I dim it?

Yes — recommended. The included E26 LED bulbs are non-dimmable warm-white. To enable dimming: replace all bulbs with dimmable E26 LEDs (widely available, $8-15 each) and install a compatible triac wall dimmer. At 30-50% brightness, the silk cover produces its most atmospheric register — the crisscross shadow pattern becomes softer, the warm mid-century glow deepens, and the fixture reads exactly as the tradition intended for evening use.

How do I clean the silk cover?

Gently. Dust with a soft dry brush (a clean makeup brush works well) or low-power vacuum brush attachment held at distance, every 3-4 months. Never use water, damp cloths, or cleaning sprays on silk — moisture damages the material and can distort the wireframe silhouette. Keep the fixture out of heavy-humidity or heavy-cooking-vapor environments (bathrooms, kitchens with heavy oil-vapour cooking). Kept in dry conditions, natural silk lasts as long as any lighting material.

Hospitality-scale cluster installations?

Yes — the Perla Cluster Ceiling is designed exactly for these applications. Multi-fixture cluster installations (staggered heights across a large ceiling plane, mixed sizes for compositional variation), matched-batch silk coordination, custom dimensions on request, and interior-designer trade pricing available. Boutique hotels (lobbies, restaurant rooms, guest-room installations), mid-century-forward restaurants, coworking flagship spaces, and showroom applications are our common project categories. Write to support@stuberlighting.com with your project brief — installation count, ceiling heights, size mix preferences, timeline.

"The bubble form is one of the enduring silhouettes in twentieth-century design; the flush-mount ceiling variant is one of the tradition's less-photographed but most-installed deployments. Our Perla Cluster Ceiling is a design tribute to that mid-century tradition, faithfully reproduced in the original crisscross steel-wire and stretched-silk technique. Four sizes because dining rooms, bedrooms, hotel lobbies all have different scales."
