SILK N°07 · WIDE-FLAT DISC
A disc of silk,
held to the ceiling.
A wide, shallow silk pendant designed to sit low and quiet — closer to the ceiling than a traditional pendant, wider in diameter than most, warm in tone rather than architectural. Three sizes from an intimate 17.7 inches to an unusually generous 35.4 inches. Natural mulberry silk over a hidden metal frame; standard hardwired install; the fixture nearly every modern dining, foyer, or hospitality space is quietly looking for.
The wide-and-shallow silhouette is one of the most usefully quiet fixtures in modern lighting.
Traditional silk pendants tend towards vertical volume — spherical, bubble-shaped, pear-formed — because vertical mass reads as "lamp" from any angle in the room. The wide-flat disc does something different. Because its height is small relative to its diameter, the shade sits close to the ceiling; because its diameter is generous, it holds visual space without dominating vertical space; because its silk fabric is stretched taut across the wide underside, the entire lower surface acts as a single evenly-luminous plane when lit.
This is the fixture that works over a dining table without cutting the eye-line between people seated at it, over a kitchen island without pushing into the workspace, and in a foyer without demanding attention on entry. It reads as ceiling architecture more than as pendant statement — considered, present, but never loud.
Three sizes, three deployments
Choose by table width, not by taste.
17.7"
Small
17.7"⌀ × H 14.2" — intimate.

Deepest of the three, most vertically-present. Correct for foyers, bedrooms as bedside pairs, hallways, breakfast nooks, and any room where the pendant needs to feel considered rather than commanding. Also the specification for standard 8-ft ceilings where taller-and-narrower fixtures would over-dominate.
25.6"
Medium
25.6"⌀ × H 10.2" — standard.

The proportional middle — wide enough to hold visual space, shallow enough not to intrude. Correct for 4-6-seat dining tables, standard living-room seating groups, average-sized foyers, and single-pendant kitchen island installations. Also correct paired over long dining tables (two Mediums on a 10-ft table read more considered than one over-sized Large).
35.4"
Large · statement
35.4"⌀ × H 8.7" — architectural.

The specification for oversized dining tables (8-12 seats), large kitchen islands, hotel lobbies, showroom spaces, and any interior where the pendant is meant to hold the ceiling's centre of gravity. At 35.4 inches diameter, the shade reads as ceiling architecture — a low, wide, evenly-luminous plane hovering above the room. This is the size for the applications that most silk pendants don't scale to.
Material
Natural mulberry silk.
The shade is natural mulberry silk — the finest grade of natural silk fibre, produced by Bombyx mori silkworms fed exclusively on white mulberry leaves. Mulberry silk carries a subtle lustre and warm tone that other lighting materials don't replicate; hand-stretched over the metal frame, it reads as uniformly white in daylight and as luminously warm-cream when lit from within. Each shade is individually hand-formed, so subtle variation across units is expected and intentional — the signature of natural silk under hand craft.
Construction
Silk over metal frame.
A hidden metal armature provides the shade's disc shape and structural rigidity; the silk is stretched taut across it, secured at the perimeter, and finished so that no frame edges are visible from below. The frame is what makes the wide-flat silhouette possible at 35.4-inch diameter — silk on its own cannot span that width without support. The trade-off is entirely worthwhile: the resulting fixture is stable, silk-diffused across its full underside, and dimensionally consistent across production units.
Rooms
Where the Marlow belongs.
Modern dining room
Above the table, quietly.
Medium above 4-6-seat tables; Large above 8-12-seat tables. Hang bulbs 30-36" above the tabletop — the wide-flat silhouette means the shade doesn't cut eye-lines across the table. Silk-diffused warm glow reads as evening atmosphere without producing table-surface glare.
Kitchen island
Single-pendant install.
One Medium or Large above the island, centred on the long axis. The single-pendant approach reads more considered than the three-pendant-cluster that most kitchen islands default to — cleaner ceiling, less visual noise, more atmospheric evening cooking.
Foyer or entry
Considered welcome.
Small in intimate entries; Medium in standard-scale foyers; Large in double-height entries where a wide fixture holds the ceiling's vertical space without descending too far. Silk warmth is the correct entry-lighting register.
Hospitality & commercial
Lobby scale.
Large is our specification for hotel lobbies, boutique restaurants, coworking meeting rooms, and showroom-scale interiors that need silk warmth at architectural size. Multi-fixture installations and matched-batch coordination available.

Questions
Which size for my dining table? ▬
Standard rule: pendant diameter should be roughly one-half to two-thirds of table diameter (or table width for rectangular tables). For a 4-seat round or square table (36-40" wide), choose Small or Medium. For a 6-seat rectangular (60-72" long), Medium works singly or pair two Smalls staggered. For an 8-10-seat rectangular (84-108" long), Large works singly or pair two Mediums. For 10-12-seat tables (120"+), pair two Larges or use three Mediums staggered. When uncertain, larger reads more intentional than smaller; a fixture that feels slightly oversized is usually correct.
How high should I hang it above a table? ▬
30-36 inches from tabletop to bulb (not to shade bottom) is the standard specification for dining fixtures. Because the Marlow is wide and flat, the shade sits close to the ceiling — this means eye-lines across the table are preserved even when the fixture hangs at the correct functional height. For kitchen islands, 32-38 inches from countertop to bulb; for foyers, 7-8 ft floor clearance is the standard.
Marlow vs Nimbus vs Fiora — which silk fixture? ▬
All three are part of our Silk Series but they solve different problems. Marlow is a wide-flat hanging pendant on an adjustable cable — for dining tables, kitchen islands, foyers, and any application where the fixture hangs below the ceiling and holds space horizontally. Nimbus is a flush-mount ceiling lamp — asymmetric cloud silhouette, hugs the ceiling entirely, for bedrooms and low-ceiling rooms. Fiora is a flush-mount pleated-cloud with a walnut wood centre — Japandi/wabi-sabi register, for bedrooms and nurseries. Choose Marlow if you need a hanging pendant; choose Nimbus or Fiora if you need a flush-mount ceiling fixture.
Is 35.4 inches too large? ▬
For most residential rooms, yes — the Large is deliberately scaled for oversized dining tables (8+ seats), large kitchen islands (60"+ long), and hospitality/commercial applications. It is not the size to install in a standard 8-seat dining room "just because it looks impressive"; the fixture will feel over-scaled and dominant. Medium is the more common residential specification. Choose Large only when the room genuinely needs an architectural fixture, when the table or island is oversized, or when the application is commercial/hospitality where visual weight is welcome.
Can I dim it? ▬
Yes — recommended. The included E26 LED bulb is non-dimmable warm-white. To enable dimming: replace with a dimmable E26 LED bulb (widely available, $8-15) and install a compatible triac wall dimmer. At 30-50% brightness, the wide-flat silk shade produces its most atmospheric register — the underside becomes an evenly-glowing plane rather than a task-brightness source. For dining rooms in particular, dimming is what unlocks the fixture's evening character.
How do I clean natural mulberry silk? ▬
Gently. Dust with a soft dry brush (a clean makeup brush works well) or low-power vacuum brush attachment held at distance, every 3-4 months. Never use water, damp cloths, or cleaning sprays on natural silk — moisture damages the fibres and can cause staining. Keep the fixture out of heavy-humidity or heavy-cooking-vapor environments. Kept in dry conditions, natural mulberry silk lasts as long as any lighting material.
Hospitality-scale and commercial orders? ▬
Yes — the Marlow Large is designed exactly for these applications. Boutique hotels (lobbies, restaurants, guest-room installations), showroom spaces, coworking meeting rooms, natural-modern restaurants, and any hospitality specification wanting silk warmth at architectural scale. Multi-fixture matched-batch shade coordination, custom cable lengths, and interior-designer trade pricing available. Write to support@stuberlighting.com with your project brief — installation count, ceiling heights, table/island dimensions, and timeline.
"The wide-flat silk disc is the silhouette most modern interiors are quietly looking for. Not a statement bubble, not a sculptural cloud, not a designer tribute — just a wide plane of silk-diffused warmth held to the ceiling. Three sizes because dining tables, kitchen islands, and foyers all have different scales. Mulberry silk because no other material behaves quite the same way as an evenly-luminous shade."
