SILK · N°04 · BUBBLE FLOOR

A bubble, standing.

The mid-century bubble tradition, translated to floor scale. A hand-formed polymer-silk shade — sphere or pear — perched on a slender chrome tripod, plugged into any standard wall socket. Two silhouette models, five sizes, in a chrome-and-white palette that reads as fluently in a mid-century living room as in a Japandi bedroom. Bulb included, plug type selectable at checkout.

I · The lineage

The bubble, standing on the floor.

The mid-century bubble lamp was originally conceived in 1947 as a ceiling pendant — a soft translucent volume of light hung from the ceiling, warm and organic against the linear geometry of postwar interiors. The Perla Floor Lamp translates that same silhouette to floor scale: the identical polymer-silk shade, the identical hand-welded steel-wire skeleton, now perched on a polished chrome tripod and delivered with a wall plug rather than a junction-box wiring requirement.

This is a design tribute to the mid-century bubble tradition, honestly stated — not an authentic reproduction of any specific designer's licensed piece. Certified-authentic mid-century originals are available from &Tradition at significantly higher price points. The Perla is our answer for interiors that want the visual language of the tradition, at the compact scale a floor lamp allows, at accessible price.

II · The silhouette

Sphere, or pear.

Model A — Sphere

Balanced · iconic

The perfect sphere — the most iconic mid-century bubble silhouette, most instantly recognisable, works in nearly any interior. Belongs in living rooms next to Eames-era seating, in modernist reading nooks, in bedrooms as a floor-scale alternative to a bedside table lamp, and in Japandi interiors where geometric restraint is the design principle.

Model B — Pear

Sculptural · organic

The elongated teardrop — more sculptural, with a stronger organic character than the pure sphere. The upper narrows towards the tripod stem; the lower widens into a full curve. Belongs in Scandinavian and Wabi-Sabi interiors, in bedrooms and reading corners where a more expressive silhouette is welcome, and in interiors where the fixture is meant to hold its own next to considered furniture.

III · The material

The original bubble-lamp technique.

Each shade is built the way mid-century bubble lamps have always been built: a lightweight steel-wire skeleton is hand-welded into the target silhouette (sphere or pear), then a polymer-silk material is precision-sprayed layer by layer over the frame until the surface reads as a seamless soft shell. A final protective coating ensures long-term durability, even light diffusion, and colour stability across years of installation.

The material behaves optically like natural silk fabric — light passes through it warmly, without reflection or point-source clarity — but it's more durable than natural silk, more colour-stable, and more resistant to dust and normal indoor conditions. This is the practical trade-off the original bubble-lamp inventors made, and it remains the correct choice for a floor fixture that will live in a living-room or bedroom corner for years.

IV · The scale

Five sizes across two shapes.

Model A · Small ∅10.5" × H52.5"

Bedside · nightstand alternative

Model A · Medium ∅13" × H57.5"

Living-room corner · reading nook

Model A · Large ∅15" × H61.5"

Statement living rooms · foyers

Model B · Small ∅13" × H52.5"

Bedrooms · reading corners

Model B · Medium ∅17" × H57.5"

Statement living rooms · lounges

Total heights (52.5"-61.5") place the shade at seated eye-level in a living-room armchair or slightly above head-level standing. Cord is 59.1 inches. Choose plug type at checkout — US, UK, AU, or EU.

V · The details

Considered, throughout.

Bulb included.

Ships with a warm-white E26 (US standard) LED bulb at 2700K — the temperature at which polymer-silk reads warmest and closest to the mid-century atmosphere the tradition was designed for. Edison-style bulbs are also compatible for a more vintage-industrial reading. Dimmable if you swap to dimmable E26 LEDs and pair with a compatible dimmable plug-in dimmer.

Chrome tripod, polished.

Polished chrome three-leg tripod base, hand-welded from steel — the mid-century pairing of chrome-and-white is one of the tradition's most enduring finish combinations. The tripod's low centre of gravity gives the fixture stability without adding visual weight; the polished finish reads as material rather than as decoration.

Two-switch operation.

Dual controls — an inline foot-switch on the cord for use while seated, and a pull-cord at the shade for use while standing. Choose whichever suits the room's use pattern; both operate the same LED module independently. Simple, mechanical, no smart-home apps required.

Global plug options.

Four plug types available at checkout — US (standard flat blade), UK (three-pin square), AU (angled two-pin), EU (round two-pin). Compatible with AC 110-240V worldwide. For rooms with wall-switch-controlled outlets, the inline foot-switch bypasses the wall-switch requirement.

VI · Where it belongs

Rooms that read the mid-century line.

A mid-century modern living room — Model A Medium in the corner next to a lounge chair, or Model A Large as the corner's design anchor. Chrome-and-white reads as the mid-century tradition's original finish; the sphere reads as the tradition's original silhouette. Nothing else needed.

A reading corner — Model A or Model B Small next to a wingback or reading chair. The shade sits at seated eye-level; the warm 2700K glow reads warm without producing glare on a book. The foot-switch means you turn it on before you sit down and off without moving.

A bedroom, as a floor-scale bedside alternative — Model A Small next to the bed instead of a table lamp on the nightstand. This is one of the mid-century tradition's less-obvious deployments: the bubble floor lamp as the bedroom's ambient-warmth source, freeing the nightstand for books and objects rather than a bright shade.

A Japandi or Scandinavian interior — Model B Small in the softer wabi-sabi register, Model A Medium in the more minimal Scandinavian register. The chrome reads as considered warm-cool tension against oak and linen; the sphere reads as the geometric moment the room asks for.

VIII · Questions

Sphere or pear — which shape?

Model A (sphere) is the most iconic mid-century bubble silhouette — instantly recognisable, works in nearly any interior, safest choice for rooms that want the classical bubble reading. Belongs in mid-century modern living rooms, minimalist Japandi interiors, and modernist reading corners. Model B (pear) is more sculptural — the elongated teardrop reads as more organic, more expressive. Belongs in Scandinavian and wabi-sabi interiors where a softer silhouette is welcome, and in bedrooms and reading corners where the fixture is meant to have its own personality rather than blend in. When in doubt, Model A is the safer specification.

Which size for my room?

Small (Model A Small ∅10.5" or Model B Small ∅13") — bedside as an alternative to a table lamp, small bedrooms, reading corners with a single armchair, entry corners. Sits at approximately seated shoulder-height. Medium (Model A Medium ∅13" or Model B Medium ∅17") — living-room corners next to a lounge chair or sofa arm, standard bedrooms, reading nooks with a full lounge chair. Sits at approximately seated eye-level. Large (Model A Large ∅15") — statement living rooms wanting a floor-scale anchor, corners of large open-plan spaces, boutique-hotel lounges. Sits above eye-level when seated; approaches head-height when standing.

Is this an authentic Nelson Bubble Lamp?

No — we are transparent about this. The Perla is a design tribute to the mid-century bubble-lamp tradition, produced with the same steel-wire and polymer-silk technique that gives the form its optical character. It is not an authentic licensed reproduction of the original designer's piece, which is available from &Tradition (the official licensee) at significantly higher price points and with authentic-piece certification. If you require certified-authentic mid-century reproductions for a design-conscious application, we recommend purchasing from the licensed source. If the visual language of the tradition matters more than certified authenticity, the Perla is our answer at accessible price.

Which plug type should I select?

Select the plug type that matches your country's wall outlets: US Plug (two flat parallel blades) for United States, Canada, Mexico, most of Latin America, Japan. UK Plug (three square pins) for United Kingdom, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore. AU Plug (two angled flat pins) for Australia, New Zealand. EU Plug (two round pins) for continental Europe. The internal electronics accept AC 110-240V globally, so travelling with the fixture only requires a plug adapter, not a voltage converter.

Can I dim it?

Yes — recommended for atmospheric use. The included E26 LED bulb is non-dimmable warm-white. To enable dimming: replace with a dimmable E26 LED bulb (widely available, $8-15) and plug the fixture into an in-line plug-in dimmer, or into a dimmer-capable wall socket. At 30-50% brightness, the polymer-silk shade produces its most atmospheric character — the warm mid-century glow the tradition was designed for.

Hospitality-scale orders?

Yes — the Perla Floor Lamp is designed for both residential and hospitality-scale specification. Mid-century-forward hotel guest rooms and lounges, boutique-hotel reading corners, café atmosphere corners, coworking spaces, and hospitality categories specifying the mid-century bubble tradition. Multi-fixture installations, matched-batch shade coordination, and interior-designer trade pricing available. Write to support@stuberlighting.com with your project brief — installation count, timeline, shape/size preferences, and plug-type mix if the project spans multiple regions.

"The mid-century bubble on a floor tripod is one of the tradition's less-obvious deployments and one of its most useful. The Perla Floor Lamp is our companion to the Perla Bubble Cluster Pendant — same silhouette language, same polymer-silk technique, now perched on a chrome tripod and delivered with a wall plug. For living-room corners and bedroom bedsides where the ceiling isn't the right place for the fixture."
