SILK · N°03 · BUBBLE CLUSTER
Three bubbles, hand-drawn
from a mid-century line.
Three hand-formed silk bubbles suspended in cluster — a design tribute to the 1947 mid-century bubble-lamp tradition, faithfully reinterpreted in polymer-silk over hand-welded steel wire. Choose a single shape configuration for a rhythmic row, or the mix-match Combo for staggered heights and shape play. Warm-white LED-compatible sockets, adjustable cable, deliberately versatile for any ceiling that needs an atmospheric anchor.

I · The lineage
A design tribute, honestly stated.
The bubble-lamp form was originated in 1947 by an American mid-century designer working with hand-welded steel wire and a sprayed polymer coating — a technique borrowed from military materials of the period and applied to residential lighting for the first time. The result was one of the most enduring silhouettes in twentieth-century design: a soft translucent bubble, warm and organic, that reads as sculpture during the day and as diffused light at night.
The Perla is a design tribute to that mid-century bubble tradition — not an authentic reproduction of any specific designer's licensed piece, but a faithful reinterpretation of the visual language that made the form iconic. We produce it because the form deserves accessible-priced options, and because the three-bubble cluster arrangement opens compositional possibilities that single bubbles don't. If you require certified-authentic mid-century reproductions, licensed originals are available from &Tradition and Modernica at significantly higher price points.
II · The configurations
Three shapes. Four ways to hang them.
Model A × 3 — Flat pear
15.8"⌀ × 8.7"H · low-profile
Three identical shallow-pear bubbles arranged in a horizontal row. Reads as rhythmic and quiet — best for long dining tables, kitchen islands, and installations where the ceiling doesn't want visual weight. The lowest profile of the three shapes.
Model C × 3 — Round sphere
11.8"⌀ × 11.8"H · balanced
Three identical perfect spheres — the most iconic of the mid-century bubble silhouettes, most instantly recognisable. Balanced proportion works across bedrooms, dining rooms, foyers, and modernist interiors that want a considered fixture without a directional shape signature.
Model D × 3 — Tall pear
11"⌀ × 15.8"H · elongated
Three identical elongated teardrops — the most sculptural of the three shapes, with the strongest vertical presence. Belongs in double-height foyers, staircases, and rooms where the fixture needs to hold vertical space rather than horizontal.
Combo — A + D + C
Mix-match · staggered heights
One of each shape — flat pear, tall pear, sphere — hung at staggered drops for compositional play. The mid-century bubble lamp at its most expressive, and the configuration most-photographed in interior editorial. Belongs in rooms where the fixture is the room's design statement.
III · The material
Polymer-silk. The original technique.
Each Perla shade is built the way mid-century bubble lamps have always been built: a lightweight steel-wire skeleton is hand-welded into the target silhouette, then a polymer-silk material is precision-sprayed layer by layer over the frame until the surface reads as a seamless soft shell. A final protective coating ensures long-term durability, even light diffusion, and colour stability across years of installation.
The material behaves optically like natural silk fabric — light passes through it warmly, without reflection or point-source clarity — but it's more durable than natural silk, more colour-stable, and more resistant to dust and normal indoor conditions. This is the practical trade-off the original bubble-lamp inventors made in 1947, and it remains the correct choice for a fixture meant to last decades in a residential ceiling.
IV · The scale
Shape sizes, and cable length.
| Model A · flat pear |
15.8"⌀ × 8.7"H · three of same shape
|
| Model C · round sphere |
11.8"⌀ × 11.8"H · three of same shape
|
| Model D · tall pear |
11"⌀ × 15.8"H · three of same shape
|
| Combo · mix-match |
One A + one C + one D · staggered heights
|
Standard 59-inch adjustable hanging cable per shade — each of the three bubbles hangs independently, allowing staggered-drop compositions when installed. Custom cable lengths available at no extra charge for double-height foyers or specific drop-height requirements — write to support@stuberlighting.com with your ceiling-to-floor measurement before ordering.
V · The craft
Considered, throughout.
Bulbs included.
The Perla ships with three E26 warm-white LED bulbs at 2700K — the temperature at which polymer-silk reads warmest and closest to the mid-century atmosphere the form was designed for. Edison-style bulbs are also compatible for a more vintage-industrial reading. Dimmable if you swap to dimmable E26 LEDs and install a compatible triac wall dimmer.
Three independent cables.
Each of the three shades hangs from its own 59-inch adjustable cable, sharing a common ceiling canopy. This is what allows staggered-drop compositions — hang all three at the same level for a rhythmic row, or stagger the drops for the mid-century editorial look. Custom cable lengths on request.
Hand-welded frame.
The steel wire skeleton of each bubble is hand-welded, one at a time, then covered in polymer-silk. This is the technique the form was invented with in 1947 and remains the correct production method — machine-formed frames would not carry the subtle asymmetry that gives each bubble its handcraft signature.
Individual variation.
Each shade is hand-formed with subtle variations in silhouette, surface finish, and light transmission across each unit. Your Perla will be subtly different from photographs and from every other Perla produced. This is the material's signature and the tradition's hallmark.
VI · Where it belongs
Rooms that read the mid-century line.
A mid-century modern living room — Combo or Model C, centred over the primary seating group. The three-bubble cluster reads as the design vocabulary the room was built for: walnut credenzas, teak dining chairs, restrained-palette upholstery, the aesthetic tradition running from Nelson-era mid-century through modern Scandinavian.
A dining room — Model A over a long dining table for a rhythmic horizontal row; Combo over a round dining table for compositional interest. Adjust cable lengths so bulbs hang 30-36 inches above the tabletop.
A double-height foyer or staircase — Model D or Combo, cables extended for the vertical drop. The elongated tall-pear silhouette holds vertical space; the mix-match Combo reads as the mid-century editorial statement the entry demands.
A hospitality installation — cafés, restaurants, boutique hotels, and hospitality projects specifying mid-century-forward identity. The Perla's cluster arrangement scales elegantly across multi-fixture installations. Coordinated matched-batch material and interior-designer trade pricing available — write to support@stuberlighting.com with your project brief.

VIII · Questions
Which configuration — same shape or Combo? ◯
Same shape (A×3, C×3, D×3) reads as rhythmic, balanced, and quietly considered — the correct choice for interiors that want the fixture to be atmospheric rather than declarative. Model A×3 for horizontal spread over long tables; Model C×3 for balanced installation in most rooms; Model D×3 for vertical statement in tall spaces. Combo (A + C + D) reads as editorial, compositional, and mid-century-signature — the correct choice for rooms where the fixture is meant to be the design conversation. The Combo is the configuration most-photographed in interior magazines featuring the mid-century bubble tradition; it belongs in living rooms, foyers, and hospitality projects wanting a fixture with its own personality.
Is this an authentic Nelson Bubble Lamp? ◯
No — we are transparent about this. The Perla is a design tribute to the mid-century bubble-lamp tradition originated in 1947, produced with the same steel-wire and polymer-silk technique that gives the form its optical character. It is not an authentic licensed reproduction of the original designer's piece, which is available from &Tradition (the official licensee) at significantly higher price points and with authentic-piece certification. If you require certified-authentic mid-century reproductions for a design-conscious application, we recommend purchasing from the licensed source. If the visual language of the tradition matters more than certified authenticity, the Perla is our answer at accessible price.
How do I stagger the drops? ◯
Each of the three shades hangs from an independent 59-inch adjustable cable, meeting at a shared ceiling canopy. To create a staggered composition: at installation, adjust each cable to a different length. Common patterns: for Combo, hang the largest shade highest and the smallest lowest for a visual descending line; for same-shape configurations (A×3, C×3, D×3), stagger drops by 4-8 inches for subtle rhythm. Standard cables reach up to 59 inches; longer custom cables are available at no extra charge for double-height installations — write to support@stuberlighting.com before ordering with your specific measurements.
Can I dim it? ◯
Yes — recommended. The included E26 LED bulbs are non-dimmable warm-white. To enable dimming: replace with dimmable E26 LEDs (widely available, $8-15 each) and wire through a compatible triac wall dimmer. At 30-50% brightness, the polymer-silk shades produce their most atmospheric character — the warm mid-century glow that the form was designed for. Dimming is particularly effective in dining rooms and living rooms where the fixture serves both dinner-hour and evening-atmosphere roles.
How do I clean the polymer-silk shades? ◯
Gently. Dust with a soft dry brush or a low-suction vacuum brush attachment held at distance, every 2-3 months. Avoid direct water contact; if a spot cleaning is required, a lightly-dampened microfibre cloth (barely wet with water, no soap or cleaner) can be dabbed on the surface — don't rub, don't scrub. Never use paper towels, abrasive sponges, glass cleaner, or ammonia-based products. Kept dry and out of humid environments (bathrooms, heavy-cooking kitchens), the polymer-silk finish lasts as long as any lighting material.
Hospitality-scale orders? ◯
Yes — the Perla is designed for both residential and hospitality-scale specification. Mid-century-forward cafés, restaurants, boutique hotels, and coworking spaces specify the bubble-lamp tradition frequently because it reads as design vocabulary rather than as decoration. Multi-fixture installations, custom cable lengths, coordinated matched-batch material, and interior-designer trade pricing available. Write to support@stuberlighting.com with your project brief — installation count, timeline, configuration preference (same-shape or Combo), and any custom specification.
"The mid-century bubble lamp is one of the enduring silhouettes in twentieth-century residential design — soft, warm, hand-formed, and instantly readable across nearly every modern interior style. Our Perla is a design tribute to that tradition, honestly stated, faithfully reproduced in the original steel-wire and polymer-silk technique. Three bubbles because the composition matters as much as the individual form."
