SILK · N°02 · CLOUD CEILING
A cloud, held to the ceiling.
Real mulberry silk — the finest natural silk fibre available — hand-formed into an asymmetric cloud that mounts flush against the ceiling. Off, it reads as a quiet sculptural cloud. On, hundreds of overlapping silk layers scatter warm LED light into a glow that no other lighting material produces. Two configurations: standard warm-white, or smooth Triac dimming.

I · The material
Mulberry silk. Not decoration.
Mulberry silk is produced by Bombyx mori silkworms fed exclusively on white mulberry leaves. It is the finest grade of natural silk in the world — prized in textile history for its unmatched translucency, lustre, and tensile strength. When silk fibres are layered by hand into a lighting shade, they don't behave like any other lighting material. Paper is uniformly translucent; glass reflects and refracts along its surface; fabric diffuses evenly. Silk carries subtle depth — hundreds of individual fibres, each catching light at a slightly different angle, producing a surface luminosity that has visible complexity.
The Nimbus is our second silk fixture and our first at ceiling scale. Where our Selene pendant uses hand-stretched silk over a spherical frame — geometric, considered, complete — the Nimbus takes silk in the opposite direction: hand-formed over an asymmetric metal cloud frame, letting the material find its own irregular shape. The result reads as sculptural during the day and as luminous atmosphere at night. This is not silk used as a stylistic reference. It is silk used because no other material behaves this way with light.
II · The transformation
Off, and on. Two fixtures.
Daytime, unlit
A sculptural cloud.
In ambient daylight, the Nimbus reads as a considered silk sculpture mounted flush to the ceiling — off-white, quietly luminous with the subtle sheen that only natural silk has, holding the room's light without producing any of its own. It's a piece of sculpture that happens to also be a lamp.
Evening, illuminated
A halo, from within.
When the LED activates, warm 3000K light passes through hundreds of overlapping silk layers and is scattered, softened, and warmed at each pass. The cloud becomes luminous from within — glowing warm-white with subtle variation across its surface, casting a soft halo onto the ceiling around it. It's the moment the fixture reveals what it is.
Product photography of silk fixtures — including our own — cannot fully capture the transformation from unlit to lit. The Nimbus you receive will look meaningfully more atmospheric in your room than in any static image. This is the material's signature, not a photography limitation.
III · The form
Not symmetric. Deliberately.
The Nimbus does not attempt to be a perfect geometric form. Real clouds are asymmetric — thicker in one region, thinner in another, denser at the centre than at the edges. The Nimbus's cloud silhouette is hand-formed to carry the same visual behaviour: substantial at its middle, softer at its edges, with subtle rises and depressions across its surface that catch light differently at each viewing angle.
This is deliberate opposition to the geometric-perfect tradition in modern lighting. It's the wabi-sabi principle applied to ceiling scale: beauty in the imperfect, considered rather than machined, natural rather than uniform. Each Nimbus is individually hand-shaped, which means each is subtly different from the photographs and from every other Nimbus produced. This is the fixture's signature, and it's why the Nimbus belongs in interiors that recognise imperfect craft as its own aesthetic register.
IV · The configuration
Standard, or Triac dimming.
Warm Light 3000K
Standard configuration
Fixed 3000K warm-white output. Controlled by your existing wall switch. The amber warmth of 3000K is deliberately chosen — silk's natural ivory tone reads warmest at this temperature. Correct for rooms where the light is either on or off — foyers, dining rooms, secondary bedrooms, hallways.
Triac Warm Dimming
Recommended for bedrooms
Same 3000K tone with smooth stepless dimming. Silk at 20-40% dim produces an exceptional atmospheric mood — the glow becomes deeper, warmer, more layered. Requires a Triac (thyristor) wall dimmer — purchased separately from a hardware retailer, $15-30 typical. Recommended for primary bedrooms and living rooms where atmospheric evening brightness matters.
Need Neutral (4000K) or Cool White (6000K) for a specific application? Custom colour temperature is available on request — write to support@stuberlighting.com before ordering.
V · The craft
Considered, throughout.
Integrated LED. 50,000 hours.
The LED module is factory-installed inside the silk shade — no bulb sockets, no bulb replacements, no compatibility questions. Rated for 50,000 hours of operation, which is roughly seventeen years of normal residential use. If your module ever needs service, the fixture is field-serviceable by a licensed electrician; two-year manufacturer warranty covers premature failure.
Silk over metal frame.
The silk is hand-formed over an internal metal skeleton that provides the cloud's structural integrity. The frame is invisible from outside — you see only the silk. Silk shade is durable in normal indoor use; avoid humid environments (bathrooms, kitchens with heavy oil-vapour cooking) which would degrade the natural fibres over time.
Flush installation.
Standard ceiling junction-box installation — 19.7 inches in diameter, 7 inches in profile height. Mounts flush against the ceiling; low profile preserves head clearance for 8-foot residential ceilings. Licensed electrician required for wiring; the box itself is standard residential specification.
Care and longevity.
Never use water, damp cloths, or cleaning sprays on silk. For dust: a very soft dry brush (clean makeup brush or watercolour brush) or a low-power compressed-air duster held at distance every 3-4 months. Keep out of direct prolonged sunlight which can yellow silk over years. Treated correctly, natural silk lasts as long as any lighting material.
VI · Where it belongs
Rooms where the ceiling holds atmosphere.
A Japandi or Scandinavian primary bedroom — Triac Dimming, centred over the bed, dimmed to 30% in the evening. The silk cloud reads as considered warmth against a linen headboard and oak nightstands; the flush mount preserves ceiling clearance in rooms with standard 8-foot ceilings. This is the specification the fixture is designed for.
A wabi-sabi living room — Triac Dimming or Warm Light, centred over the primary seating group. The asymmetric cloud form reads as sculpture during daylight hours and as atmospheric ambience in evening. Particularly effective in rooms with natural-wood floors, hand-thrown ceramics, and imperfect-craft objects.
A meditation space, tea room, or wellness studio — Warm Light 3000K in intimate spaces (tea rooms, small meditation corners); Triac Dimming in dedicated studios where atmosphere shifts across sessions. The silk diffusion is precisely what these rooms are asking for — atmosphere rather than task illumination.
A hospitality installation — boutique hotels, spa lounges, wellness centres, tea houses, yoga studios, and any hospitality category specifying atmosphere fixtures. The Nimbus is designed for exactly these applications — atmospheric, low-profile, silk-craft signature. Multi-fixture matched-batch coordination available; write to support@stuberlighting.com with your project brief.

VIII · Questions
Warm Light or Triac Dimming — which should I choose? ☁
Choose Warm Light 3000K for rooms where the light is either on or off — foyers, hallways, dining rooms, secondary bedrooms, guest rooms. Simple, reliable, controlled by your existing wall switch. Choose Triac Warm Dimming for rooms where atmospheric evening brightness matters — primary bedrooms, living rooms, meditation studios, spa spaces. Silk at 20-40% dim produces its most exceptional atmospheric character; if you'll spend evening hours in the room, Triac dimming isn't a luxury — it's what unlocks the fixture's full range. The $50 premium is worthwhile for primary bedrooms and evening-use rooms. Note that the Triac version requires a compatible Triac wall dimmer purchased separately from any hardware retailer ($15-30 typical).
Why does the fixture look so different in photos vs. lit? ☁
Natural mulberry silk is a uniquely light-reactive material. Unlit, it reads as a sculptural white cloud — quiet and elegant but only half the story. Lit, hundreds of overlapping translucent silk fibres scatter warm LED light with a depth and warmth that photography cannot replicate — cameras compress dynamic range, flatten warm tones, and can't capture the subtle fibre-level luminosity that silk produces. The Nimbus you receive will look meaningfully more atmospheric in your room than in any photograph, including our own. This is the material's signature, not a photography limitation.
Will my Nimbus look exactly like the display photos? ☁
The overall cloud silhouette will be consistent — asymmetric, hand-formed, sculptural. The precise surface texture, fibre distribution, and fold character will differ subtly from unit to unit, as with any handcraft object made from natural material. This is deliberate; it's what makes the Nimbus a considered object rather than a machine-manufactured product. If you require multi-fixture matched batches for coordinated installations (hospitality, matched primary-bedroom + guest-bedroom pairs), we coordinate matched material at no additional cost — write to support@stuberlighting.com before ordering.
Nimbus or Selene — which silk fixture? ☁
Both are from our silk collection. The Nimbus is a flush-mount ceiling lamp — mounts flat against the ceiling, sits low-profile at 7 inches, ideal for standard 8-foot residential ceilings. The Selene is a hanging pendant light — suspended from an adjustable cord at your specified drop height, spherical rather than cloud-shaped, works well over dining tables and bedside pairs. If your ceiling clearance is limited or you want the fixture to feel architectural (part of the ceiling itself), choose Nimbus. If you want a hanging fixture that reads as sculptural volume in the room rather than as ceiling accent, choose Selene. Both use natural silk in the same tradition and are designed to coexist harmoniously if you want silk lighting across multiple rooms.
Can I use it in kitchen or bathroom? ☁
We don't recommend either. Kitchens with heavy oil-vapour cooking will slowly deposit oil residue into the silk fibres, which cannot be cleaned without damaging the shade. Bathrooms and powder rooms carry too much humidity for natural silk to maintain its integrity over years of installation. The Nimbus is designed for dry indoor spaces — bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, meditation and yoga studios, tea rooms, foyers, hallways, and hospitality guest rooms and spa lounges. For similar aesthetic in kitchen or bath applications, consider our Agave Dewdrop Glass Ceiling Light or metal-shade ceiling fixtures.
Hospitality-scale orders? ☁
Yes — the Nimbus is designed for exactly these applications. Boutique hotels (guest rooms, corridors, spa areas), wellness centres, meditation and yoga studios, tea houses, natural-modern restaurants (private dining rooms), hospitality categories specifying atmosphere over statement fixtures. Coordinated matched-batch silk for multi-fixture installations, custom colour temperature (4000K / 6000K on request), extended lead times for larger orders, and interior-designer trade pricing are all available. Write to support@stuberlighting.com with your project brief — installation count, timeline, and any custom specification.
"Some fixtures are meant to declare presence. The Nimbus is meant to reveal it — quiet by day, atmospheric by night, and never trying to be a statement piece. It's our answer to the ceiling in a room that already has enough decoration: a considered cloud of light, hand-formed from the finest natural silk we could source, doing exactly what a ceiling fixture should do and nothing more."
