The Akari 31N is a clean cylindrical pendant — a continuous vertical column of hand-folded mulberry Washi paper at a narrow 13-inch diameter. Where our sphere pendants are organic round forms and our Juni and E Series are tapered or sectioned silhouettes, the 31N is the simplest geometric form in our family: a true cylinder. Available in two dramatically different sizes from the same 13-inch profile — Standard (20.5" tall) for compact spaces, Extra Long (62.2" tall, just over five feet) for vaulted and double-height installations.
The continuous cylindrical silhouette catches and diffuses light differently from our other pendant shapes — light enters the top, travels down the full height of the column, and exits as a softly tapered glow rather than a single point. The result is a vertically extended pool of warm light rather than a single concentrated source. Ships with a 3000K warm-white bulb included.

The defining feature — a clean continuous cylinder rather than a tapered, sectioned, or spherical form. The pure geometric shape is the most architectural silhouette in our Washi family; the 13-inch narrow profile keeps the fixture slim and graceful even at the larger 62-inch height.
Two sizes, dramatic scale range
Same 13" diameter, but the Standard is 20.5" tall while the Extra Long is 62.2" tall — over five feet of vertical paper. This dramatic size range from a single product family means you can specify the right scale for any room without changing the underlying silhouette. The smaller size suits 8-9ft ceilings; the Extra Long is purpose-built for vaulted, staircase, and double-height installations.
Hand-folded thick mulberry paper
High-quality thick mulberry Washi paper, hand-folded into the cylindrical form. The dense paper "breathes" — filtering light into the warm uniform glow that synthetic materials cannot replicate. The cylindrical geometry produces particularly even light diffusion compared to tapered or spherical shapes.

Which size for my ceiling height? +
The two sizes serve very different rooms. The Standard (20.5") works in 8-9 foot ceiling rooms — at this height the fixture occupies about 28-32 inches of vertical space when installed (lamp height + canopy + short drop), leaving comfortable clearance. The Extra Long (62.2") is purpose-built for 10ft+ ceilings — at standard heights it would hang too low and crowd the space. For two-story foyers and staircase voids with 14ft+ ceilings, the Extra Long descends gracefully through the void; cord extensions are available on request. When in doubt, the Extra Long needs vertical space to read as architectural drama; smaller rooms benefit from the Standard.
How does 31N compare to other vertical Akari pendants? +
Several vertical silhouettes in our family, each different. The Juni (17.7" × 32.6") is a wider tapered egg-shape, dramatic but more organic. The 23A/24A (11.4-12.6" diameter) are slim eggs designed for cluster installations. The E Series goes much taller (41" to 106") with slimmer tapered profiles. The 31N (this fixture) is unique as the only true cylinder — clean continuous geometry rather than tapered or sectioned, and the only one offered in the dramatic 20.5"/62.2" size range from the same profile. Choose 31N for pure cylindrical geometry; choose Juni for organic egg silhouette; choose 23A/24A for clusters; choose E Series for very tall vaulted spaces.
How do I care for Washi paper? +
Dust gently with a soft feather duster or microfiber cloth — for the Extra Long size, use a long-handled duster wand. Do not wet-clean, steam, spray with cleaners, or use damp cloths; water permanently stains and warps Washi paper. Avoid hanging in humid environments (bathrooms, kitchen areas with stovetop steam) and away from direct heat sources (radiators, fireplaces). With basic monthly dusting, the paper maintains its appearance for many years; slight ambering over time is natural and considered part of the material's character.
For the warmest paper-glow effect, use 2700K-3000K LED or filament bulbs with high color rendering (CRI/Ra > 90). Cooler bulbs flatten the paper's natural amber undertone.
