A cascading sculpture of light. Stacked mulberry paper spheres for vertical voids.

The Akari Ori Lantern Series elevates your home's architecture with a rhythmic stack of handcrafted mulberry paper spheres — a cascading sculpture that draws the eye upward and soothes the soul. Inspired by the quiet beauty of traditional Japanese folding arts (Ori), these towering pendants transform high-ceiling voids into curated gallery spaces. Each geometric tier filters light through organic Washi fibers, casting a soft ethereal glow that brings grounded Zen calm to even the grandest modern interiors.

Available in three vertical scales — 44.9", 56.3", and 68.1" — the Ori is built specifically for the rooms where ordinary pendants would get lost: vaulted living rooms, double-height foyers, two-story staircases, open-concept halls, and modernist great rooms. The hand-folded craft tradition meets architectural ambition.

01

Stacked rhythmic spheres — visual anchor for vertical space

The Ori silhouette is built on the art of folding and stacking — multiple paper spheres cascading in rhythmic vertical sequence. The result acts as a "Visual Anchor" — using the natural warmth of mulberry paper to soften the hard lines of modern architecture, transforming empty vertical voids into intentional sculptural focal points.

02

Three vertical scales — 44.9" / 56.3" / 68.1"

All three sizes share the same 15.7" diameter, varying only in height — calibrated for different vertical needs. The 44.9" works in 10ft+ ceilings; the 56.3" suits 11-12ft vaulted rooms; the 68.1" is built for double-height foyers, two-story staircases, and 14ft+ great rooms. Choose the height that fills your vertical void without overwhelming the space below.

03

Authentic mulberry Washi paper

Premium hand-cut mulberry Washi paper — the long fibers diffuse light into the soft amber glow that defines authentic Akari lamps. The natural fibers "breathe" in the way synthetic alternatives cannot, producing meditative warmth that turns ordinary rooms into sanctuaries.

04

Hardwired · vaulted ceiling compatible · plug-in option

Standard hardwired installation (professional electrician recommended). Includes all necessary accessories — compatible with vaulted or sloped ceilings. Plug-in conversion available on request. 59" sleek black cord; custom extension available for taller installations. Compatible with any dimmable E26/E27 bulb.

Vertical space is an untapped canvas

Modern architecture creates dramatic vertical volumes — vaulted ceilings, two-story foyers, open staircases, double-height great rooms — but most lighting solutions treat these spaces as problems rather than opportunities. Standard pendants hang at table height and leave the upper volume empty. Track lights press flat against the ceiling and miss the sculptural potential. The Ori takes a different design approach: it claims the vertical void as sculptural canvas, filling it with the warm rhythmic cascade of stacked Washi spheres. The result transforms architectural emptiness into curated intentional presence — the void becomes a feature rather than an absence.

Where the Ori hangs best

Two-story foyer or entryway — the cascading silhouette is designed for double-height entry spaces; produces a memorable first impression that's also functional ambient light.

Vaulted living room ceiling — fills the architectural void that high ceilings create; the warm Washi glow softens hard surfaces like concrete, exposed beams, or expansive glass.

Open staircase or stairwell — the vertical stacked form follows the staircase's natural eye-line; visible from multiple floors with sculptural presence at each level.

Long hallway with high ceilings — the slim 15.7" diameter fits narrow hallway proportions while the tall stacked silhouette adds visual rhythm.

Above a dining table or kitchen island(44.9" size only)— place the bottom 30-36" above the table surface; the stacked form creates layered ambient warmth across the dining surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Ori size should I choose? +

Choose by ceiling height. 44.9" Ori — ideal for 10ft+ ceilings; works above dining tables (with 30-36" clearance to tabletop), over kitchen islands, in moderate-height living rooms. 56.3" Ori — ideal for 11-12ft vaulted ceilings, larger living rooms, single-story foyers with elevated ceilings. 68.1" Ori — built for double-height foyers, two-story staircases, 14ft+ great rooms, and architecturally dramatic spaces. The lamp's bottom should always be at least 7.5 feet (90 inches) above the floor in open spaces; subtract the lamp height from your ceiling height, leaving at least 7.5ft clearance to determine which size fits.

Can the Ori install on vaulted or sloped ceilings? +

Yes — the Ori ships with all necessary accessories for vaulted and sloped ceiling installation. The hardware kit includes adjustable canopy fittings that allow the lamp to hang vertically regardless of ceiling angle. For very steep slopes (greater than 45°), contact us before ordering to confirm compatibility. We recommend a licensed electrician for installation, especially in vaulted ceilings where overhead work requires proper safety equipment.

Can the Ori be plug-in instead of hardwired? +

Yes — plug-in conversion is available on request. When ordering, leave a note specifying plug-in configuration and we'll modify the cord assembly before shipping. Plug-in installation eliminates the need for an electrician and works in rentals or spaces without ceiling junction boxes; however, the cord will be visible running to the nearest outlet, which may affect the lamp's clean architectural presence. For permanent installations in owned homes, we recommend the standard hardwired configuration for the cleanest aesthetic.

For the warmest paper-glow effect, use 2700K-3000K LED or filament bulbs with high color rendering (CRI/Ra > 90). Cooler bulbs flatten the paper's natural amber undertone.

Each piece is handmade by artisans — slight variations in paper texture, pleat alignment, and exact dimensions are part of the authentic hand-craft character.

Professional electrician recommended for hardwired installation, especially in vaulted ceilings or high installations.

Safety tested for indoor use in dry locations. Meets technical requirements for North American residential lighting installations.

The Art of Light and Paper

More than a source of illumination, each piece is a sculptural presence within the room.

Our Sculptural Paper Lantern Collection brings together softly curved silhouettes, delicate paper textures and warm diffused light. Inspired by the simplicity of Japanese design and the expressive character of handcrafted objects, every lamp is created to feel calm, natural and timeless.

When illuminated, the layered paper gently softens the light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. When switched off, its organic silhouette remains a quiet piece of art.

Natural Texture, Gentle Illumination

The finely textured paper allows light to pass through softly rather than shine directly into the room. Its layered surface creates subtle variations in brightness, giving the lamp a warm, atmospheric glow.
