A pear-shape Washi paper sculpture. Wider than tall, soft and grounded.
The Akari 23N is the most distinctive shape in our floor lamp family — a generous pear-shape silhouette that's actually wider than it is tall. At 29.5 inches across the widest point and 43.3 inches tall, the 23N reads as a sculptural orb at sitting-height rather than a vertical light column. Where our tall column floor lamps reach up to fill vertical space, the 23N spreads outward to fill horizontal presence — producing a soft warm pool of light at couch-and-armchair height rather than overhead.
The pear silhouette is harder to engineer than a sphere or cylinder; the asymmetric form requires careful internal structure to maintain its grace. Each piece takes 5-10 days of handcrafted preparation. The result is a fixture that reads as art object first and lighting fixture second — the kind of piece that anchors a room's design language and quietly defines a corner.
Pear-shape sculptural silhouette
The defining feature — an organic pear silhouette rather than a vertical column or perfect sphere. The asymmetric form is unmistakably sculptural; it reads as art object first and light fixture second. The 23N is the only floor lamp in our family wider (29.5") than tall (43.3") — a deliberate inversion of the typical vertical-column floor lamp.
Soft warm pool at sitting height
Because the wider shade sits at sitting-eye height (43" tall), the 23N produces ambient warmth at exactly the level where you experience it from a couch or armchair. The light reaches outward across the room rather than down from above; the effect is more like a candle on a low table than a standard floor lamp's overhead beam.
Genuine mulberry Washi paper
Premium mulberry Washi paper that "breathes" — filtering light into a warm uniform diffusion that synthetic materials cannot replicate. The 29.5" shade surface area produces particularly even, cloud-like glow when illuminated. Hand-folded onto the pear frame by skilled artisans.
5-10 day handcrafted production
The pear silhouette takes longer to handcraft than spheres or cylinders — the asymmetric form requires careful internal structure and paper-stretching to maintain its shape. Each 23N is individually commission-crafted over 5-10 days; the resulting fixture has the small variations and texture irregularities that mark genuine handmade work.
When a corner needs sculpture, not a column
Most floor lamps fill vertical space — tall columns that reach up to the ceiling and produce light from overhead. The 23N solves a different problem. It fills horizontal corner space at sitting height, producing ambient warmth at the level you actually experience it from a couch or armchair. For rooms with low ceilings where a 6-foot column floor lamp would feel crowded, the 23N gives you sculptural presence without vertical bulk. For rooms with normal ceilings that already have overhead lighting, the 23N adds the warm low-level glow that overhead fixtures cannot produce. For modernist interiors that value organic shape against rectilinear architecture, the pear silhouette provides exactly that contrast. This is the floor lamp for someone who already has the vertical lighting figured out and wants something more sculptural at lower scale.
Where the 23N stands best
Living room corner next to a sofa or armchair — the sitting-height pool of light pairs with seated viewing; the wide shade fills the corner with sculptural presence without vertical bulk.
Beside a low side table or media unit — the 43" height puts the shade at the same level as low furniture, producing a cohesive horizontal layer of warm light.
Master bedroom floor corner — soft floor-level warm glow at a generous scale; the pear silhouette reads as sculpture during the day, ambient anchor in the evening.
Low-ceiling rooms (8-9ft) that want sculptural presence — at 43.3" tall, the 23N delivers sculptural scale without crowding standard ceilings; works where taller column lamps would feel cramped.
Modernist, Japandi, or Wabi-Sabi interiors that value organic form — the asymmetric pear silhouette adds the organic shape these design traditions prize against rectilinear architecture.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does 23N compare to our other floor lamps? +
The 23N is the only floor lamp in our family where the shade is wider than the lamp is tall. Our other Akari floor lamps — the 10A (49"), UF3-Q (57"), UF4-33N (73"), and UF4-L6 (74") — are all vertical column designs that go up. The 23N (this fixture) spreads outward instead — 29.5" wide pear shape at 43.3" tall. Choose 23N when you want sculptural horizontal presence and warm light at sitting height; choose our vertical columns when you want overhead-style ambient light and architectural vertical scale.
Is the 23N suitable for reading? +
For casual evening reading from a couch or armchair, the soft Washi-diffused warm glow is comfortable and easy on the eyes — and because the 43" height puts the shade at sitting-eye height, the light reaches your book or magazine naturally. For intensive task reading (small print, sustained focus), the diffuse light is intentionally softer than a directional task lamp; pair the 23N with a dedicated reading lamp for the best of both layers. The 23N is designed as an atmospheric ambient light source first — its job is to make the corner feel calm, not to deliver maximum brightness on a specific page.
How do I care for the large pear-shape paper shade? +
Dust gently with a soft feather duster or microfiber cloth — the 29.5" surface area benefits from regular light dusting. Do not wet-clean, steam, spray with cleaners, or use damp cloths; water permanently stains and warps Washi paper. Place the lamp away from humid environments and away from direct heat sources. The asymmetric pear shape is more exposed to side-bumps than columns or spheres — position away from high-traffic pathways and out of reach of small children and pets. With basic dusting, the paper maintains its appearance for many years; slight ambering over time is natural and part of the material's character.
For the warmest paper-glow effect, use 2700K-3000K LED or filament bulbs with high color rendering (CRI/Ra > 90). Cooler bulbs flatten the paper's natural amber undertone.
Each piece is individually commission-crafted by artisans over 5-10 days — slight variations between individual lamps in paper texture, pear geometry, and exact dimensions are part of the authentic hand-craft character.
Safety tested for indoor use in dry locations. Meets technical requirements for North American residential lighting installations.
