Each shade is hand-folded by skilled artisans using authentic mulberry Washi paper; the two steel-reinforced cords (59" each, free extensions available) hang from a single ceiling canopy — the "spider" mount that lets you arrange the two shades however your space demands. Drape them low over a dining table for intimate atmosphere; spread them wide across a living room vault for dramatic statement.

How does the spider mount installation work? +
The Whimsy uses a single ceiling junction box for both shades. One canopy mounts to the ceiling at the junction; two steel-reinforced cords emerge from the canopy, each ending in a Washi paper shade. You can adjust the drape height of each cord independently — shorten one for higher hang, lengthen the other for lower hang, or match them for symmetric arrangement. The "spider" name comes from this multi-leg configuration from a single anchor point. We recommend a licensed electrician for installation, especially for vaulted ceilings.
What spacing should I use between the two shades? +
Spacing depends on your installation context. Above a dining table: keep shades 18-30 inches apart to define the table surface without crowding. Above a kitchen island: 24-36 inches apart for layered atmospheric light. In a vaulted living room: 36-60 inches apart for dramatic cascade. The two cords come from a single canopy, so spacing is determined by cord arrangement — practice with the cords loose before final positioning. Lower bottom of each shade should always be at least 30-36 inches above table surfaces, or 7.5 feet above open floor space.
How do I care for the Washi paper shades? +
Dust gently with a soft feather duster or microfiber wand — use an extended-reach duster for ceiling-mounted positions. Do not wet-clean, steam, spray with cleaners, or use damp cloths; water permanently stains and warps Washi paper. Avoid touching the paper directly to prevent fingerprint oils. With basic monthly dusting, the paper maintains its appearance for many years; slight ambering over time is natural and part of the material's character.
For the warmest paper-glow effect, use 2700K-3000K LED or filament bulbs with high color rendering (CRI/Ra > 90). Cooler bulbs flatten the paper's natural amber undertone.
