An organic cocoon of Washi paper. Hand-folded sculpture on slim metal legs.
The Akari UF3-DL is a sculptural floor lamp built around an organic cocoon-like shade — hand-folded mulberry Washi paper formed into a soft, irregularly-curved silhouette rather than a smooth column or strict geometric form. Where most floor lamps prioritize clean uniformity, the UF3-DL embraces the organic — the shade looks like a cocoon or a soft seedpod suspended on slender black metal tripod legs, with the kind of asymmetry and hand-crafted variation that machine-made fixtures cannot achieve.
At 55.1" tall and 19.7" wide, the UF3-DL sits at mid-scale — substantial enough to anchor a living room corner, modest enough to fit standard 9-foot ceiling rooms without crowding. The organic form complements both Mid-Century Modern interiors (where it adds soft contrast to crisp rectilinear furniture) and Japandi spaces (where it embodies the Wabi-Sabi appreciation of organic imperfection).
Organic cocoon-like silhouette
The defining feature — an organic cocoon shape with soft asymmetric curves rather than a smooth column or geometric form. The hand-folded silhouette has the visual character of natural objects (seedpods, cocoons, river stones) rather than industrial fixtures. Each lamp's cocoon profile has its own subtle variation, reinforcing the one-of-a-kind hand-crafted quality.
Long-fiber mulberry Washi paper
Authentic long-fiber mulberry Washi paper — denser and stronger than the thin synthetic paper used in mass-market lanterns. The long fiber length provides superior durability and a rich tactile texture. The paper "breathes" — filtering light into a warm uniform diffusion that synthetic alternatives cannot match. Resists yellowing over years.
Slender black metal tripod base
Three slim black metal legs hold the cocoon shade with intentional graphic contrast — the organic warmth of paper against the precision of slender dark metal. The legs are deliberately understated, letting the cocoon silhouette dominate the visual composition while providing stable footing.
Bulb included · in-line switch · plug-in
Ships with a 3000K warm-white bulb included. Plug-in installation — no electrician required. In-line ON/OFF button switch on the cord. Compatible with any dimmable E26 LED or filament bulb for brightness flexibility.
An organic counterpoint to rectilinear architecture
Modern American interiors are rectilinear by default — straight walls, square doorframes, rectangular furniture, level floors. A room composed entirely of these straight lines can feel cold and unfinished, even when the architecture is well-designed. What's missing is organic counterpoint — soft asymmetric form that reads as living rather than manufactured. This is exactly the role the UF3-DL plays. The cocoon silhouette is irregular enough to feel grown rather than built. The hand-crafted variation in each lamp reinforces the sense of natural rather than industrial origin. In a Mid-Century Modern living room with Eames chairs and a Noguchi coffee table, the UF3-DL adds the warm organic contrast those rectilinear classics need. In a Japandi space, it embodies the Wabi-Sabi philosophy of beauty in imperfect organic form. The lamp doesn't fight the room's geometry; it completes it.
Where the UF3-DL stands best
Standard living room corner (9-10ft ceilings) — mid-scale ambient light source with sculptural organic presence; the cocoon silhouette anchors the corner as much as the warm glow.
Beside a Mid-Century reading chair or sofa — the organic cocoon form provides soft contrast to crisp rectilinear classics (Eames, Wegner, Noguchi furniture); produces the warm ambient light those interiors need.
Primary bedroom corner — warm evening light at a sculptural scale; the cocoon form reads as quiet sculpture rather than functional accessory.
Modernist hallway or transitional space — anchors transitional zones with organic warm presence; the cocoon silhouette is engaging from any walking-past angle.
Japandi, Wabi-Sabi, Scandinavian, or Mid-Century Modern interiors — Washi paper organic form is signature to these design traditions; the hand-folded cocoon embodies their shared appreciation of natural imperfect beauty.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the UF3-DL compare to the UF3-Q floor lamp? +
Similar mid-scale floor lamps, different silhouettes. The UF3-Q (22" × 57.1") has a smooth oversized shade — clean, even, geometric. The UF3-DL (this fixture, 19.7" × 55.1") has the organic cocoon silhouette — asymmetric, hand-folded, irregular. Choose UF3-Q when you want clean smooth Washi presence; choose UF3-DL when you want organic cocoon character with intentional hand-folded variation. UF3-DL pairs especially well with Mid-Century Modern furniture where the soft asymmetric form provides contrast to crisp rectilinear classics.
Will every UF3-DL look the same? +
Each piece will have its own subtle variation in cocoon shape, fold symmetry, and paper texture — this is intentional and characteristic of the hand-folded craft tradition. We aim for consistent quality and overall silhouette, but the fine variations between individual lamps are exactly what gives each fixture its one-of-a-kind character. If you have very specific aesthetic requirements (precise symmetry, exact dimensions), the UF3-DL may not be the right fixture — our UF3-Q (clean smooth shade) and UF4-33N (smooth column) are more consistently uniform between units.
How do I care for the cocoon Washi shade? +
Dust gently with a soft feather duster or microfiber cloth — pay attention to the folded ridges where dust collects. Do not wet-clean, steam, spray with cleaners, or use damp cloths; water permanently stains and warps Washi paper. Place away from humid environments and direct heat sources. The long-fiber mulberry paper used in the UF3-DL is more durable than thinner synthetic alternatives, but it still requires careful handling — avoid pressing or pushing on the cocoon shade. With basic monthly dusting, the paper maintains its appearance for many years; slight ambering over time is natural and part of the material's character.
For the warmest paper-glow effect, use 2700K-3000K LED or filament bulbs with high color rendering (CRI/Ra > 90). Cooler bulbs flatten the paper's natural amber undertone.
Each piece is hand-folded by artisans — minor variations in paper texture, symmetry, and exact cocoon proportions are natural characteristics that make each lamp one-of-a-kind.
Place on a stable, level floor surface. The slender metal tripod provides stable footing on hardwood, low-pile carpet, or other firm flat surfaces.
Safety tested for indoor use in dry locations. Meets technical requirements for North American residential lighting installations.
