Hand-stretched Washi paper. Soft golden glow. Wabi-Sabi in its purest form.
The Washi Paper Sphere Pendant is more than a light fixture — it is a sculptural piece of considered atmosphere. Each shade is hand-stretched by artisans using authentic Washi paper over a reinforced bamboo and iron frame, producing the iconic round silhouette that instantly transforms any room into a tranquil sanctuary. When lit, the dense Washi paper filters harsh bulb light into a soft, diffuse, golden amber glow — closer to candlelight than electric light, with the texture and warmth that only handmade paper can deliver.
Authentic hand-stretched Washi paper
Real Japanese-style Washi paper, hand-stretched by artisans over each frame — not printed, not pressed, not vinyl-laminated. The paper has the irregular fibers, subtle thickness variations, and natural warmth that machine-made alternatives cannot replicate. Slight variations between individual pieces are part of the authentic hand-craft character.
Bamboo ribbing — natural structure
The internal frame uses natural bamboo ribbing that gives the sphere its precise geometric form while keeping the entire fixture remarkably lightweight. Bamboo ages naturally with the paper, producing the integrated material aging that synthetic alternatives never develop.
Eleven sizes — every room scale covered
From 11.8" mini for bedside, hallway niches, and small powder rooms, through 23.6" and 31.5" for standard dining and living spaces, up to 47.2" oversized statement for grand foyers and double-height ceilings. The widest size range in our entire lighting catalog, by design.
Bulb included · dimmable with compatible bulb
Ships with a 3000K warm-white bulb included. Compatible with any dimmable E26 LED or filament bulb if you want full brightness control through a standard wall dimmer. Plug-in version available on request — let us know at checkout.
The case for paper over glass and metal
Modern lighting has settled into glass and metal — frosted glass globes, brass arms, blackened steel. These materials are practical for mass production but visually identical across thousands of products. Washi paper is the opposite: each fixture has variation, texture, and warmth that you can read across a room. Paper lanterns also diffuse light fundamentally differently from glass — instead of refracting light through a hard surface, paper softens it through countless natural fibers, producing the candlelit glow that no glass fixture can replicate. The washi paper is for rooms that want material warmth as much as illumination — the Japandi, Scandinavian, and Wabi-Sabi interiors that have come to define considered American design over the last decade.
Where the Washi Paper Sphere hangs best
Dining room above a round or rectangular table (23.6"–31.5") — the soft amber glow turns dinners into atmospheric occasions; the round form anchors any table shape gracefully.
Living room as central pendant (19.7"–29.5") — paper sphere as the room's warm anchor; complements both modern furniture and traditional interiors.
Bedside or small bedroom (11.8"–15.7") — replaces standard table lamps with a sculptural ceiling pendant; soft warm glow ideal for evening reading.
Grand foyer or double-height entryway (35.4"–47.2") — the oversized version reads as art rather than utility; warm paper presence welcomes guests in a way metal chandeliers cannot.
Japandi, Scandinavian, Wabi-Sabi, or modern Zen interiors — Washi paper is the signature material of these design traditions; the Akari Sphere integrates rather than contrasts.

Each piece is handmade; slight variations between individual fixtures are part of the natural craft character and considered part of the material's appeal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which size fits my room and ceiling height? +
General room-sizing formula: add your room's length and width in feet, then convert the total to inches — that's the recommended sphere diameter. For example, a 12ft × 14ft room (= 26 inches total) pairs well with the 60A (23.6") or 75A (29.5"). For dining tables, the sphere should be roughly half to two-thirds of the table's longest dimension. For ceiling height: 8-foot ceilings work best with 11.8"–19.7" spheres hung 30" from the ceiling; 10–12 foot ceilings can accommodate 21.7"–31.5" spheres with adjustable rope; vaulted or double-height spaces (12ft+) suit the 35.4"–47.2" statement sizes. If you're between sizes, choose the larger — undersized fixtures consistently feel underwhelming, oversized fixtures consistently feel intentional.
How do I care for and clean Washi paper? +
Dust gently with a soft feather duster or microfiber cloth — that's it. Do not wet-clean, steam, spray with cleaners, or use damp cloths; water permanently stains and warps Washi paper. Avoid hanging in humid environments (bathrooms, kitchen areas with stovetop steam) and away from direct heat sources (radiators, fireplaces). With basic monthly dusting, the paper maintains its appearance for many years; slight ambering over time is natural and considered part of the material's character. If the paper becomes damaged, replacement paper shades can be ordered from our customer service.
Can I install this on a vaulted or sloped ceiling? Can it be plug-in? +
Yes to both. The standard 59-inch (150cm) adjustable rope handles standard, vaulted, and sloped ceilings out of the box; for ceiling heights above 14 feet, contact us before ordering and we can extend the rope during manufacturing. For plug-in installation (renter-friendly, no electrician needed) — let us know in your order notes or contact customer service before checkout and we will convert the wiring to a plug-in cord with inline switch at no additional cost. Plug-in installation works best for the smaller sizes (30A through 60A); larger sizes have more weight and benefit from hardwired ceiling installation with secure junction box mounting.
For the warmest paper glow effect, use 2700K-3000K LED or filament bulbs. Cooler bulbs (4000K+) flatten the paper's natural amber undertone and shift the glow toward gray.
Each piece is handmade by artisans — slight variations between individual spheres in paper texture, frame geometry, and exact dimensions are part of the authentic hand-craft character.
Safety tested for indoor use in dry locations. Meets technical requirements for North American residential lighting installations.

Light, Shaped Like Sculpture
A handcrafted paper lighting collection inspired by the quiet beauty of Japanese interiors and the organic forms of modern sculpture.
The Art of Light and Paper
More than a source of illumination, each piece is a sculptural presence within the room.
Our Sculptural Paper Lantern Collection brings together softly curved silhouettes, delicate paper textures and warm diffused light. Inspired by the simplicity of Japanese design and the expressive character of handcrafted objects, every lamp is created to feel calm, natural and timeless.
When illuminated, the layered paper gently softens the light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. When switched off, its organic silhouette remains a quiet piece of art.
Stuberlighting
Made by Hand, Shaped with Patience
Every lamp is individually handcrafted by skilled artisans.
Small variations in texture, tone and surface detail are natural results of the handmade process. They are not imperfections, but part of what makes every lamp one of a kind.
-
01 — Building the Frame
The internal structure is shaped and adjusted by hand to create the lamp’s balanced, organic silhouette.
-
02 — Applying the Paper
Each section of paper is carefully positioned over the frame to preserve its natural fibers and translucent quality.
-
03 — Shaping by Hand
The surface is gently formed, aligned and refined by hand, creating the subtle folds that give the lamp its character.
-
04 — Final Inspection
Every finished piece is individually inspected for shape, structure and overall craftsmanship before leaving the workshop.
Natural Texture, Gentle Illumination
The finely textured paper allows light to pass through softly rather than shine directly into the room. Its layered surface creates subtle variations in brightness, giving the lamp a warm, atmospheric glow.
