A Series · The Flat Disc

A low-profile paper disc that hugs the ceiling instead of hanging into the room. Hand-stretched mulberry Washi over seamless bamboo ribbing — built for the eight-foot ceiling most American homes actually have.

The Proportion

2:1

Width to height — often 3:1

Most pendants are designed for ceilings nobody has.

Look at how pendant lighting is photographed and it's always the same room: ten-foot ceilings, a soaring loft, a double-height entry. The reality of the American housing stock is eight feet. Drop a sphere or a tall drum into that room and it looms — you duck under it, it crowds the table, it reads like a mistake in an otherwise finished space.

The A Series answers that by spending its size horizontally instead of vertically. Diameter runs two to three times the height, producing a wide saucer that sits close to the ceiling plane. A 27.5-inch disc reads generous rather than heavy. A 37.4-inch disc reads like art rather than obstruction — and its height is still under sixteen inches.

Flat is harder to build than round. A sphere holds its own shape; a disc wants to sag at the rim, which is why most flat paper pendants on the market warp within a year. The A Series uses denser internal bamboo ribbing specifically to hold the horizontal form, with the mulberry Washi hand-stretched over it so the exterior reads as one continuous surface with no visible seams.

Five Sizes

One silhouette, five diameters.

Same paper, same frame, same warm uniform glow. What changes is how much of the ceiling it claims.

26A

⌀ 17.7"

H 10"

Small dining areas, bedrooms, entry foyers. The one that fits a tight hallway without touching anything.

21A

⌀ 25.5"

H 11"

Standard dining tables and bedrooms with 8-foot ceilings. The most commonly ordered size.

70A

⌀ 27.5"

H 12.5"

Living rooms and dining centerpieces. Wide enough to anchor a room, still flat enough to disappear overhead.

15A

⌀ 34.6"

H 13.7"

Large dining rooms and open-plan living. Fills wide floor plans that taller fixtures can't anchor.

95A

⌀ 37.4"

H 15.7"

Grand dining, lofts, commercial spaces. Statement scale — and still only 15.7 inches tall.

Worth noticing: even the largest disc is under sixteen inches tall. That's why the whole range works under an eight-foot ceiling — you choose by room width, not by headroom.

Materials

Paper, bamboo, iron.

The Surface

Mulberry Kozo Washi.

Real mulberry-fiber Washi paper, hand-stretched over each frame by artisans. The visible fiber grain is the point — it catches and scatters light in a way machine-made paper and printed substitutes flatten out. Lit, the whole disc glows evenly instead of showing a hot spot where the bulb sits.

The Structure

Seamless bamboo ribbing.

An internal bamboo frame carries the shape without a seam showing through the paper. The flat profile gets denser ribbing than a sphere would need, because a wide disc wants to sag at the rim — that density is what keeps the horizontal line true over years rather than months.

The Hardware

Iron canopy.

A 4.7-inch iron canopy covers a standard junction box and carries the fixture on a 59-inch adjustable rope. Custom canopy sizes are available on request for non-standard boxes or ceiling medallions.

Where It Hangs

Six rooms, six sizes of the same idea.

Match the disc to the width of the room, not the height of the ceiling.

01

Dining room with an 8-foot ceiling.

The flat profile hangs over the table without crowding the sightline across it, and the wide disc anchors round, square and rectangular tables equally well. Warm even glow over dinner rather than a spotlight on the centerpiece.

Suggested: 26A · 21A · 70A

02

Living room, as a ceiling anchor.

Reads architectural rather than decorative — it occupies the ceiling plane the way considered millwork does instead of dangling into the room. Gives an open living space a warm center without taking any vertical volume away from it.

Suggested: 70A · 15A

03

Centered above the bed.

Replaces the builder-grade flush mount most bedrooms come with. Because the disc sits close to the ceiling there's no headroom problem over the bed, and the diffused paper glow reads soft enough for evening without needing a dimmer to be tolerable.

Suggested: 26A · 21A

04

Entry foyer & hallway.

The tightest ceilings in the house are usually here. The smallest disc clears an 8-foot foyer with room to spare, and a paper glow at the front door sets a warmer tone than the flush mount it replaces.

Suggested: 26A

05

Grand dining & open plan.

At 37.4 inches across, the disc stops being a light fixture and starts being the thing the room is arranged around. Wide floor plans and loft spaces that swallow ordinary pendants have something to hold onto.

Suggested: 15A · 95A

06

Boutique hospitality.

Restaurant dining rooms, hotel lobbies and guest corridors, spa and wellness interiors, short-term rentals. Low-profile discs give a property a consistent ceiling language across rooms with different heights — and they don't crowd the corridors where standard pendants have to be omitted entirely.

Installation

Hardwired, on a standard box.

Bulb Included

Ships with a 3000K warm-white bulb installed.

Every A Series pendant includes an E26 warm-white bulb at 3000K — the temperature that brings out the amber undertone in the Washi rather than flattening it. Nothing to source before your first evening with it.

Wiring

Hardwired to a standard ceiling junction box — the same connection your existing fixture uses. The 4.7-inch iron canopy covers the box; custom canopy sizes available on request.

Drop Height

A 59-inch (150 cm) adjustable rope sets the hanging height and shortens at installation. Longer drops for vaulted or sloped ceilings are available — tell us before you order.

Ceiling Types

Standard 8-foot, vaulted and sloped ceilings all work. The flat profile is what makes the low standard ceiling its best case rather than its compromise.

Dimming

Fit any dimmable E26 LED or filament bulb and the pendant runs off a standard wall dimmer. Max 40W — don't exceed it, and don't dim a non-dimmable bulb.

Bulb Choice Matters More Than Usual Here

Paper is the diffuser, so whatever the bulb does, the whole disc does. Stay between 2700K and 3000K with a high colour rendering index (CRI/Ra above 90). Cooler bulbs strip the natural amber out of the Washi and the fixture starts reading grey instead of warm.

The Scale

Add two numbers, get your diameter.

The standard interior-design sizing rule works cleanly for a round disc. Two minutes with a tape measure and you'll know which size to order.

Length + Width

For a room

Add the room's length and width in feet, then read that total as inches — that's your recommended disc diameter. A 12 × 14 ft room totals 26, which points to 21A (25.5") or 70A (27.5").

Half to two-thirds

For a dining table

The disc should measure roughly half to two-thirds of the table's longest dimension. A 60-inch table lands between 30 and 40 inches — 15A (34.6") sits right in the middle of that range.

On ceiling height: every size in the range works under a standard 8-foot ceiling, including 95A — because its height is only 15.7 inches, the disc still clears comfortably. Nine and ten-foot ceilings work equally well; just hang lower on the rope so the fixture stays in the room rather than retreating into the ceiling. Over a dining table, the usual target is 30 to 36 inches from tabletop to the bottom of the shade.

Questions

Answered plainly.

Which size should I order?

Use the room formula: add the room's length and width in feet, read the total as inches, and that's your recommended diameter. A 12 × 14 ft room totals 26, so 21A (25.5") or 70A (27.5") both work. Over a dining table, size the disc to roughly half or two-thirds of the table's longest dimension instead. If you land between two sizes, go with the larger one — undersized pendants are the more common regret, and the flat profile means the bigger disc costs you nothing in headroom.

Will this actually work under my 8-foot ceiling?

Yes — that's the case this shape was built for. Heights across the range run from 10 inches to 15.7 inches, so even the largest 37.4-inch disc leaves clear headroom under a standard 8-foot ceiling. That's the whole difference between a flat disc and a sphere: a 27.5-inch sphere would drop 27.5 inches into the room, while the 70A disc drops 12.5. You choose by room width instead of by ceiling height. Nine and ten-foot ceilings work just as well — hang lower on the rope so the fixture stays part of the room.

Is a bulb included, and can I dim it?

A 3000K warm-white bulb is included. For dimming, fit any dimmable E26 LED or filament bulb and the pendant runs off a standard wall dimmer — no adapter, no special wiring. Keep the replacement at or under Max 40W, and don't put a non-dimmable bulb on a dimmer circuit. Bulb choice matters more here than on most fixtures, because the paper is the diffuser: stay between 2700K and 3000K with CRI/Ra above 90. Cooler bulbs flatten the Washi's amber undertone and the disc reads grey.

How do I clean and care for Washi paper?

Dry dusting only. A soft feather duster or a dry microfiber cloth, once a month, is the entire maintenance routine. Do not wet-clean, steam, spray with any cleaner, or use a damp cloth — water permanently stains and warps Washi and there is no way to undo it. Keep the fixture out of humid rooms (bathrooms, directly over a stovetop) and away from radiators and fireplaces. Slight ambering of the paper over the years is natural and considered part of the material's character rather than a defect.

What is the shade actually made of?

Mulberry Kozo Washi paper, hand-stretched over an internal bamboo frame, finished with an iron canopy at the ceiling. The paper is real fibre rather than a printed or machine-embossed substitute, which is why the grain is visible when the light is on and why the glow spreads evenly instead of showing a bright spot at the bulb. The bamboo ribbing is denser on this flat profile than it would be on a sphere — a wide disc wants to sag at the rim, and that extra structure is what holds the horizontal line true.

How difficult is installation?

It's a standard hardwired pendant swap. The fixture mounts to an ordinary ceiling junction box — the same box your current light uses — and the 4.7-inch iron canopy covers it. Anyone comfortable replacing a ceiling fixture can do it; if you'd rather not work with household wiring, any electrician will treat this as a routine call. Shut off the breaker first, not just the wall switch. If your junction box is non-standard or you're mounting over a ceiling medallion, we can supply a custom canopy size — ask before ordering.

Can the hanging height be adjusted?

Yes. The pendant hangs on a 59-inch (150 cm) adjustable rope that shortens during installation, so you can set the drop to suit the room. Over a dining table the usual target is 30 to 36 inches from the tabletop to the bottom of the shade; in a walkway, keep the bottom at least 7 feet off the floor. For vaulted or sloped ceilings that need a longer drop than 59 inches, we can extend the rope — email support@stuberlighting.com before you order with the length you need.

Will two of the same size look identical?

Close, but not identical — each piece is handmade. Slight variation in paper texture, frame geometry and exact dimensions between individual discs is expected and is part of the hand-craft character rather than a fault. If you're hanging two or three in a row over an island or a long table and want them as consistent as possible, tell us at the time of order and we'll pull them from a matched batch. That coordination is standard for us on multi-fixture orders and costs nothing extra.

Do you work with trade and hospitality projects?

Yes. The A Series specifies well for restaurant dining rooms, hotel lobbies and guest corridors, spa and wellness interiors, and multi-unit residential — the low profile is often the only way to get a real pendant into a corridor or a low-ceilinged guest room at all. We offer trade pricing on orders of 20 units and above, matched-batch coordination across multi-fixture installations, custom canopy and drop lengths, and project scheduling for larger orders. Standard production lead time runs 4–6 weeks; larger coordinated orders 8–12 weeks. Send your project brief to support@stuberlighting.com.

From The Atelier

“We kept being asked for a paper pendant that wouldn't loom. The answer wasn't a smaller light — it was the same light, laid flat. Spend the size sideways and an ordinary ceiling stops being a constraint.”

The Art of Light and Paper

More than a source of illumination, each piece is a sculptural presence within the room.

Our Sculptural Paper Lantern Collection brings together softly curved silhouettes, delicate paper textures and warm diffused light. Inspired by the simplicity of Japanese design and the expressive character of handcrafted objects, every lamp is created to feel calm, natural and timeless.

When illuminated, the layered paper gently softens the light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. When switched off, its organic silhouette remains a quiet piece of art.
