FLOOR LAMP · ES · WOOD MINIMALISM

Una barra.
Una pantalla.
Nothing more.

The Vara Floor Lamp is a rod, a shade, and a base. That is all it is, and that is precisely the point. Its lineage traces to Miguel Milá's 1961 Barcelona workshop — the Catalan design tradition of stripping every object to its irreducible essentials, and finishing what remained with quiet material honesty. Solid wooden rod (Nature wood, Walnut, or matte Black). Beige linen drum shade. Weighted metal base. Warm-white E26/E27 LED bulb pre-fitted. Plug-in. No further arguments.

§ 01 · The idea

"A lamp should not shout to be noticed. It should be there when you need it — warm, quiet, unremarkable in the best sense of the word."

This is the Miguel Milá school of Catalan minimalism. Milá built his 1961 TMM Floor Lamp not as a statement piece but as a workhorse — solid wooden rod adjustable in height, cotton shade, brass fittings, base weighted heavy enough to stay put through decades of daily life. Six decades later the design is still in production, still uncomplicated, still doing exactly what it was built to do.

The Vara draws directly from that vernacular. Wooden rod. Linen drum shade. Weighted metal base. Warm E26 or E27 LED (included, pre-fitted). Plug-in with region-specific plug (US, UK, AU, EU). No integrated LED to fail. No aluminum reflector to complicate. No smart-home integration to obsolesce. Just an object that will be doing what the Vara does now for as long as you own it.

§ 02 · Three finishes

The rod changes character. The shade stays the same.

Option 01 · Es la más natural

Nature wood color.

Honey-toned solid wood with visible grain and knots — reads warmest against pale walls, wood floors, and organic textiles. Correct for Japandi, Scandinavian, wabi-sabi, and any interior where the wood should feel harvested rather than manufactured. The most Miguel Milá TMM-lineage-authentic of the three finishes.

Option 02 · La más cálida

Walnut wood color.

Rich chocolate-brown solid wood with deeper grain contrast — reads warmest against oxblood upholstery, brass accents, olive-toned textiles, and dark hardwood floors. Correct for mid-century modern, transitional, and English-library moody register. The most decoratively present of the three.

Option 03 · La más gráfica

Black & Beige.

Matte-black powder-coated rod paired with the same beige linen drum — reads as considered graphic line against pale walls, particularly effective in modern-contemporary interiors, industrial-loft register, and black-steel-detail rooms. The most contemporary of the three finishes.

⌀ 23.2" × H 64.9" (Dia 59 cm × H 165 cm)

All three ship with the same warm beige linen drum shade. Only the rod finish changes.

§ 03 · Where it lives

Six rooms. One quiet lamp.

01 · Sofa side.

Beside the sofa arm as considered evening reading light — warm beige linen glow at correct seated-reading height without direct-facing bulb glare.

02 · Reading corner.

Behind a favourite armchair or chaise — the Vara becomes the room's committed reading fixture, quiet enough to disappear into daily use.

03 · Bedroom corner.

In the bedroom corner as ambient companion to the bedside pair — provides secondary warm glow for winding-down evenings without dominating the room.

04 · Home office.

Behind the desk chair as ambient companion to task lighting — the Miguel Milá register reads as considered creative workspace signal rather than corporate-utilitarian.

05 · Entryway foyer.

Beside an entryway console — the wooden rod signals design-forward interior register from the moment guests enter, without the visual noise of a statement fixture.

06 · Boutique hospitality.

Boutique-hotel guest room corners, hospitality reading lounges, and Airbnb-styled short-term rentals where the Milá register reads as considered upscale specification.

§ 04 · Barcelona 1961 → today

A design older than its designers imagined.

1961

Miguel Milá designs the TMM Floor Lamp in Barcelona.

Solid pine rod, telescopically adjustable in height, cotton cylindrical shade, cast-iron weighted base. Manufactured by Santa & Cole starting shortly after; in continuous production for six decades since.

1987

The TMM enters Spain's National Design Award canon.

Miguel Milá receives the Premio Nacional de Diseño for a body of work anchored by the TMM's stripped-back Catalan-modernist vernacular. The lamp becomes a case study in "the honest object."

Today

Vara continues the vernacular.

Not a Santa & Cole reissue — an independent original drawing on the design vocabulary the TMM helped establish. Updated with warm-white LED (included), region-specific plug options, and choice of Nature wood, Walnut, or matte Black rod. The philosophy stays intact: an object that quietly does what it does, for as long as you own it.

§ 05 · Materials

Three components. Nothing else.

i.

The wooden rod.

Solid wood, machined from a single piece, with natural grain and knots visible on the Nature wood and Walnut finishes. Matte Black option is powder-coated over the same wooden substrate. The rod is the fixture's structural spine.

ii.

The linen drum shade.

Woven beige linen fitted over a fine internal metal shade frame. Natural fibre catches E26 warm-white bulb light in soft diffused ambient character. Same shade across all three rod finishes.

iii.

The weighted base.

Compact heavy metal floor plate. Engineered heavy enough to hold the fixture stable when brushed against; sized compact so the fixture footprint stays modest around the room.

§ 07 · Questions

If you're still deciding.

Is this an authenticated Santa & Cole TMM reissue? │ 01

No. The Santa & Cole TMM is a specific fixture designed by Miguel Milá in 1961 and manufactured under exclusive license from the Milá estate — those pieces feature specific proprietary material specifications, telescopic adjustment mechanism, and finish details. The Vara is our own independent interpretation drawing on the broader 1961 Catalan-modernist minimalist floor-lamp vernacular that Milá's TMM helped establish. It is not marketed as a Santa & Cole reissue and is not authorized under the Milá estate. If you are seeking the authenticated Santa & Cole TMM specifically, consult Santa & Cole authorized retailers directly.

About the included bulb — and can I upgrade? │ 02

Bulb included. Every Vara ships with a standard non-dimmable warm-white LED bulb pre-fitted in the E26 (US) or E27 (EU/UK/AU) socket, calibrated to 2700K for correct warm-glow character through the beige linen shade. Plug into the wall, press the inline switch, the lamp works. If you want to upgrade: the socket accepts any standard E26 (US) or E27 (EU/UK/AU) bulb. For dimming, swap in a dimmable warm-white LED. For vintage character, an Edison filament bulb provides amber warm tones that pair particularly well with Nature wood and Walnut finishes. Widely available at Home Depot, IKEA, Amazon. Maximum 40W.

Is the wood rod adjustable in height? │ 03

The Vara is a fixed-height fixture at H 64.9" — not a telescoping mechanism like the original Milá TMM. This simplifies the design (fewer moving parts, longer service life) and eliminates the drift-over-time issue that telescoping fixtures develop after years of use. If you require height adjustability specifically, we recommend the authenticated Santa & Cole TMM reissue, which preserves the original telescoping mechanism under license.

Which finish for my room? │ 04

Nature wood — for Japandi, Scandinavian, wabi-sabi, or any interior specifying honest wood register. Works with light hardwood floors and organic textiles. The most Milá-TMM-lineage-authentic choice. Walnut wood — for mid-century modern, transitional interiors, or rooms with darker wood floors, oxblood leather, or brass accents. Reads warmer and more decoratively present. Black — for modern-contemporary, industrial-loft, or interiors with black-steel details elsewhere. Reads as considered graphic line rather than wooden object. The most contemporary of the three.

Can I dim the lamp? │ 05

Yes with the correct combination. The pre-fitted bulb is non-dimmable, and the inline switch operates as on/off only. For dimming, swap the included bulb for a dimmable E26 (US) or E27 (EU/UK/AU) warm-white LED (widely available; check package for "dimmable" label), and plug into a wall outlet controlled by a triac-compatible wall dimmer (Lutron Diva and Caseta triac dimmers are known LED-compatible). At 40-60% brightness the beige linen glow reads most atmospheric.

How stable is the fixture? Will it tip? │ 06

The weighted metal base is engineered heavy enough to counterbalance the wooden rod above and hold the fixture stable through daily use — the fixture will not tip when brushed against or when the shade is gently adjusted. Position the base flush on a flat solid floor (not on rug edges that could rock under load); supervise around small children who may pull on the shade or cord.

How do I clean and maintain the wooden rod? │ 07

Nature wood & Walnut rods: wipe with a soft dry microfibre cloth for regular dust; for stubborn marks, slightly damp microfibre with mild soap solution then dry immediately. Every 6-12 months, treat with a light wood conditioner or beeswax to preserve the natural grain and prevent drying. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners, harsh solvents, or prolonged sunlight exposure (may fade the wood over time). Black powder-coated rod: wipe with soft dry microfibre; for marks, slightly damp cloth with mild soap solution. Beige linen shade: gently vacuum with fabric-brush attachment every 3-6 months. For spot marks, gentle spot-clean with dry-cleaning solvent applied via clean white cloth, blotted gently. Never machine-wash or soak.

How much space does the base take up? │ 08

The base is a compact weighted metal floor plate — modest footprint that sits unobtrusively beside furniture rather than dominating the floor plan. The shade above measures ⌀ 23.2" at its widest point, so plan for at least 24" clearance around the fixture (particularly beside sofas and armchairs where you don't want the shade grazing surrounding upholstery when the wooden rod moves slightly). Total fixture footprint from the base plate outward is more compact than the shade suggests.

Trade programs and hospitality installations? │ 09

Yes — the Vara is a specified fixture for boutique-hotel guest room corners, hospitality reading lounges, Airbnb-styled short-term rental units, and multi-unit residential projects where the Miguel Milá register reads as considered upscale interior specification. Multi-unit installations produce visual consistency across coordinated rooms. Trade programs available; matched-batch wood coordination for multi-fixture installations (particularly for Nature wood and Walnut where individual grain variation is inherent); project management for larger orders; bulk pricing for orders of 20+ units. Production lead times run 4-6 weeks. Write to support@stuberlighting.com with your project brief.

§ 08 · Designer note

"The Vara is a rod, a shade, and a base. Nothing else. That is exactly what Miguel Milá taught in Barcelona in 1961, and it is exactly what we are continuing to make in 2026. Choose Nature wood for the honest option, Walnut for the warm option, or Black for the contemporary graphic option. Everything else stays the same, because there is nothing else to change."

Designer Tribute Note. The Vara Floor Lamp is an independent interpretation drawing on the 1961 Catalan-modernist minimalist floor-lamp design vernacular established by Miguel Milá's TMM Floor Lamp for Santa & Cole. It is not marketed as, and is not, an officially licensed reissue of the Santa & Cole TMM. For authenticated Santa & Cole pieces we recommend consulting Santa & Cole authorized retailers directly. The Stuberlighting Vara offers a fixed-height design with pre-fitted warm-white LED and choice of Nature wood, Walnut, or matte Black rod rather than the telescopic solid pine construction of the historical original.
