PENDANT LIGHTS · A JAPANESE-INSPIRED LANTERN
A round washi lantern.
Softly, calmly, above the table.
The Tsuki is a round washi-paper pendant designed to bring a calm Japanese-inspired mood to daily domestic spaces. Imported washi paper stretched over a soft globe form filters the bulb behind it into a warm diffused glow that reads as considered ambient light rather than as bright fixture. Two sizes — a compact Ø 21.7" version for breakfast nooks, reading corners, and bedrooms, and a Ø 34.6" statement version for larger dining rooms, kitchens, and entryway foyers. The name Tsuki is the Japanese word for the moon — the quality of light the fixture is calibrated to produce.

Where the light comes from matters.
Most pendant lights emit light directly — the bulb shines through clear glass, metal, or open air, and the space below is filled with directional illumination. The Tsuki works differently. The imported washi-paper shade wraps the bulb entirely, so what reaches your dining table or reading corner is not the bulb itself but the light that has passed through the paper. This produces a softer, warmer, more ambient quality of light — the fixture reads as gentle glowing sphere rather than as bright fixture source.
This diffusion is the design's central idea, and it comes directly from a Japanese lantern-making tradition — washi paper (和紙) has been made in Japan for over 1,300 years, valued for its unique fibrous structure that scatters light in a way modern synthetic materials cannot replicate. Held against a light source, washi has a subtle organic character — you can see the fibres woven into the sheet — that reads as handmade craft rather than as machine-perfect surface. The Tsuki carries this material honestly: the paper we use is imported washi, not printed-fibre imitation, and the light it emits carries the paper's character with it.
The rounded globe form is deliberate. Where angular lantern shapes read as architectural statement, the Tsuki's soft-curved sphere reads as calm sculptural presence — it doesn't demand attention from the room, it settles into the room. Two sizes let you calibrate the fixture to the space: the Ø 21.7" version for intimate applications (breakfast nooks, bedside positions, reading corners), the Ø 34.6" version for larger applications (dining rooms with 8+ seat tables, kitchen islands, entryway foyers, and living rooms with statement register).
Two sizes
Intimate, or statement.

Size 01 · Compact
Ø 21.7"
× H 20.9" · nearly spherical
The intimate register. Correct for breakfast nooks with round or small square tables, primary bedrooms (over bedside or dressing area), reading corners beside a favourite armchair, powder rooms with 8-9-ft ceilings, and kids' rooms where softer diffused light supports bedtime routine. Reads as considered ambient anchor rather than as bright task fixture.
Best for: 4-seat table · reading corner · bedroom
Size 02 · Statement ★
Ø 34.6"
× H 33.1" · nearly spherical
The statement register. Correct for larger dining rooms with 8-10-seat tables, kitchen islands (long marble or walnut counters), entryway foyers with 10-ft-plus ceilings, and modern living rooms centred above seating clusters where the fixture reads as sculptural centrepiece. The larger diameter throws proportionally more diffused ambient light — the fixture's Japanese calm register holds in rooms of substantial volume.
Best for: 8+ seat table · kitchen island · statement foyer
Washi
A 1,300-year-old paper tradition.
Feature 01
Imported paper.
The paper we use is imported washi from Japan, not printed-fibre imitation. Washi is made from long fibres — traditionally from the mulberry (kōzo) or gampi plants — that produce a paper with distinctive translucent character. Held to light, the fibres remain visible as subtle organic texture across the sheet.
Feature 02
Diffused glow.
Washi's fibrous structure scatters incoming light in every direction rather than transmitting it directly through. The result is an unusually warm, even, and gentle diffusion — the fixture emits light without any of the harshness that unshaded bulbs or thin glass shades can produce.
Feature 03
Handmade detail.
The paper is stretched onto the internal metal frame by hand rather than machine-wrapped — this produces subtle variations in tension across the surface that read as considered craft rather than as manufactured uniformity. Each fixture carries small individual differences that are part of the design intent, not defects.
If you have owned washi-shaded fixtures before, the Tsuki will feel familiar in the quality of light it produces. If you have not, expect the fixture to change how the room feels after sunset — the diffused warm glow reads as considered ambient light rather than as functional illumination.
Applications
Six rooms for a washi lantern.
Application 01
Dining rooms.
Ø 21.7" for 4-6-seat tables and breakfast nooks; Ø 34.6" for 8-10-seat statement dining. Hang the fixture 30-36" above the tabletop for correct evening-service light quality. The diffused warm glow reads as considered ambient light — different from the directional task light that clear-glass pendants produce.
Application 02
Kitchen islands.
Ø 34.6" statement pendant above longer marble or walnut kitchen islands where the fixture reads as sculptural presence rather than as functional task light. Pair with under-cabinet LED strips for cooking task illumination; use the Tsuki as ambient centrepiece.
Application 03
Bedrooms.
Ø 21.7" centred above the bed, over a dressing area, or beside a reading position. The diffused warm glow is particularly correct for bedroom register — supports bedtime routine and reading without over-illuminating the room.
Application 04
Reading corners & nurseries.
Ø 21.7" beside a favourite armchair for reading-corner ambience, or in nurseries and kids' rooms where softer diffused light supports bedtime routine. The rounded globe form reads as calm sculptural anchor rather than as demanding architectural fixture.
Application 05
Entryway foyers.
Ø 34.6" in entryway foyers with 10-ft-plus ceilings. The larger diameter reads as sculptural welcome centrepiece; the diffused warm glow throws considered ambient light onto the entryway walls. Adjust cord length at installation for correct hanging position below any ceiling.
Application 06 · commercial
Boutique hospitality.
Boutique-hotel guest rooms (Ø 21.7"), hospitality dining rooms (Ø 34.6"), and Japandi-styled boutique restaurants. The washi-paper vocabulary reads as considered material choice — appropriate for interiors specifying Japanese-inspired calm mood as design register.
Choosing
A two-step decision.
1
Ø 21.7" (intimate) or Ø 34.6" (statement)?
The most fundamental Tsuki decision. Ø 21.7" for breakfast nooks, primary bedrooms, reading corners, nurseries, and 4-6-seat dining tables. Standard 8-9-ft residential ceilings work comfortably. Ø 34.6" for 8+ seat dining tables, kitchen islands, entryway foyers, statement living rooms. Requires 9-ft-plus ceilings for the sphere to read as intended without visually crowding the room.
2
Match hang height to your surface.
Above dining tables: hang the fixture's lowest point 30-36" above the tabletop for correct evening-service light quality (add fixture height + drop when calculating). Above kitchen islands: 32-38" above the counter surface. In foyers & open rooms: 6-7 ft above the floor to the fixture's lowest point. Cord is adjustable during installation; extended lengths available on request at no extra charge.
Craft
Handmade paper. Wired frame. Warm bulb.
Every Tsuki is assembled by hand from three components — the internal metal frame that defines the sphere's structure, the imported washi-paper shade that is stretched over the frame by hand, and the ceiling canopy hardware that connects the fixture to your ceiling electrical junction. The frame is a fine metal wire structure — heavier than the paper it supports but proportioned to remain nearly invisible through the shade. This is the shape memory of the fixture; the paper is what you see.
A standard E26 (US) or E27 (EU/UK) bulb is included — a warm-white LED calibrated to 2700K for correct washi-paper glow character. Higher color temperatures (3000K, 4000K, 5000K) can be substituted but will read cooler and lose some of the washi's warm character; we recommend keeping the warmest bulb the fixture supports. Maximum 40W (or LED equivalent). Cord length is 59" standard, adjustable at installation, with extended lengths available on request at no extra charge for higher ceilings.

Questions
Ø 21.7" or Ø 34.6" — which size? ☾
The most fundamental Tsuki decision. Ø 21.7" — the intimate register. Correct for breakfast nooks, primary bedrooms (over bedside or dressing area), reading corners, nurseries, powder rooms, and 4-6-seat dining tables. Works in standard 8-9-ft residential ceilings. Ø 34.6" — the statement register. Correct for 8-10-seat dining tables, kitchen islands, entryway foyers, and modern living rooms centred above seating clusters. Requires 9-ft-plus ceilings for the sphere to read as intended. If your specification is intimate ambient light in a small-to-medium room, choose the compact size. If your specification is sculptural centrepiece in a larger room, choose the statement size.
Is this an Akari fixture? ☾
No. Akari is a specific brand of paper lanterns designed by the sculptor Isamu Noguchi beginning in 1951 — those pieces are officially licensed reissues manufactured under the Noguchi estate's authorization. The Tsuki is a Japanese-inspired washi-paper pendant of our own design; it uses the same washi-paper material tradition that Akari fixtures use, but it is not marketed as an Akari piece and is not authorized under the Noguchi estate. If you are seeking an authenticated Akari fixture specifically, we recommend consulting the estate's authorized retailers. If you are seeking a considered washi-paper pendant with Japanese-inspired calm register, the Tsuki serves that specification.
How high should the fixture hang? ☾
Standard hanging distances by application. Above dining tables: the fixture's lowest point should sit 30-36" above the tabletop for correct evening-service light quality. Above kitchen islands: 32-38" above the counter surface. In entryway foyers and open rooms: the fixture's lowest point should sit 6-7 ft above the floor (measured from the shade's bottom edge). The cord length is adjustable during installation via the ceiling canopy — the 59" standard cord provides substantial adjustment range. Extended cord lengths (up to 10 ft) are available on request at no extra charge for double-height entryway rotundas and higher-ceiling applications.
Can I dim it? ☾
Yes — strongly recommended, particularly in dining rooms and bedrooms where evening-mode ambient light is the specification. The included E26/E27 LED bulb is non-dimmable warm-white. Replace with a dimmable E26/E27 LED (widely available at any lighting retailer) and install a triac-compatible wall dimmer. At 40-60% brightness, the washi paper catches light at its most atmospheric register — the fixture reads as gentle glowing moon rather than as bright fixture. For dining rooms, dimmable control is essentially required to enable proper evening-service light quality; the washi paper's diffused warm glow is particularly beautiful at lower brightness settings.
Which bulb color temperature works best? ☾
Stick with 2700K warm-white — the color temperature the fixture is calibrated to. The included LED is 2700K by default. Higher color temperatures (3000K, 4000K, 5000K) can be substituted physically but will read cooler and lose some of the washi paper's warm character — the paper's warm tan color reads best when paired with warm bulbs. Avoid 4000K "cool white" or higher (too white, clashes with the natural washi register). Edison-style filament bulbs (E26/E27) also work if you want to reinforce the vintage-Japanese lantern character, but confirm the bulb wattage stays at or below 40W.
How do I clean and maintain washi paper? ☾
Washi paper is more durable than it looks but should never be wet-cleaned. For dust: gently vacuum with a fabric-brush attachment on the lowest suction setting, or use a soft dry microfibre duster; every 3-6 months for residential dining and living rooms. For fingerprints or spot marks: gently blot (do not rub) with a dry soft brush; never use water, cleaners, or damp cloths — moisture will discolor the paper permanently. For tears or punctures: small damage can sometimes be repaired by a professional washi-paper conservator; contact us for referrals to conservators who work with Japanese paper fixtures. Long-term care: avoid installing directly beneath ceiling ducts that blow forced-air heating or cooling onto the paper, and keep the fixture out of direct sunlight to prevent gradual color fading.
Can I use this in a bathroom or covered outdoor space? ☾
No — indoor dry locations only. The Tsuki is rated IP20, which provides no protection against moisture. Washi paper is particularly vulnerable to humidity — moisture will cause the paper to warp, discolor, and eventually fail. Never install in bathrooms, above hot tubs, in covered outdoor patios, in enclosed pool areas, or in any location where humidity regularly exceeds normal residential interior levels. Correct locations: dining rooms, kitchens (away from stovetop steam), living rooms, bedrooms, foyers, and indoor reading corners with normal residential humidity levels.
How difficult is installation? ☾
Moderate. Unlike our plug-in floor lamps, the Tsuki is a hardwired ceiling-mount fixture — it connects to your ceiling's electrical junction rather than to a wall outlet. Professional installation by a licensed electrician is strongly recommended: 45-90 minutes typical, single electrician sufficient for both sizes. If your ceiling has an existing pendant light in the target location, replacement is straightforward. If you are converting a fixture-free ceiling location to pendant installation, additional electrical work is required (running wire from the electrical panel to the new junction box). The fixture ships with mounting hardware and detailed installation instructions; keep the washi paper shade in its packaging until final installation to avoid dust or handling marks during ceiling work.
Trade programs and hospitality orders? ☾
Yes — the Tsuki is a specified fixture line for boutique-hotel Japandi-styled interiors, hospitality dining rooms specifying Japanese-inspired calm register, and residential design projects with multi-room washi-paper specification. Trade programs available; matched-batch paper coordination for multi-fixture installations (paper sheets pulled from the same production batch for visual consistency across multiple fixtures); extended cord lengths at no extra charge; project-management coordination for larger installations. Production lead times run 4-6 weeks; multi-fixture orders may extend proportionally depending on washi-paper import scheduling from Japan. Write to support@stuberlighting.com with your project brief — quantity, size mix (compact/statement), installation locations, and target timeline.
"The Tsuki takes its cues from a 1,300-year-old Japanese paper tradition — imported washi stretched by hand over a fine metal frame in a soft round lantern form. Two sizes covering intimate reading corners to statement dining rooms. Named for the moon, calibrated to produce the quality of light the moon produces. Our first pendant in a considered Japanese-inspired register."

Light, Shaped Like Sculpture
A handcrafted paper lighting collection inspired by the quiet beauty of Japanese interiors and the organic forms of modern sculpture.
The Art of Light and Paper
More than a source of illumination, each piece is a sculptural presence within the room.
Our Sculptural Paper Lantern Collection brings together softly curved silhouettes, delicate paper textures and warm diffused light. Inspired by the simplicity of Japanese design and the expressive character of handcrafted objects, every lamp is created to feel calm, natural and timeless.
When illuminated, the layered paper gently softens the light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. When switched off, its organic silhouette remains a quiet piece of art.

The surface is gently formed, aligned and refined by hand, creating the subtle folds that give the lamp its character.
-
04 — Final Inspection
Every finished piece is individually inspected for shape, structure and overall craftsmanship before leaving the workshop.
Natural Texture, Gentle Illumination
The finely textured paper allows light to pass through softly rather than shine directly into the room. Its layered surface creates subtle variations in brightness, giving the lamp a warm, atmospheric glow.
