Pendant Light N°14 · The Danish Modernist Series
MCMLXVIII · Copenhagen to Today
— a Danish modernist icon —
Semi.
A trumpet cone of enamel steel. Semi-flush and shallow. Seven saturated colors. The 1968 Danish pendant that has anchored kitchen islands for half a century.
MCMLXVIII
Copenhagen, 1968 · to your kitchen today
The Semi Pendant Light is our tribute to the celebrated 1968 Danish modernist trumpet-cone pendant tradition — the arched enamel lampshade typology introduced by Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup at the Fog & Mørup workshop in Copenhagen, and championed today under authenticated license by Gubi. Built around a single defining principle: a shallow arched enamel steel shade that hangs semi-flush from the ceiling and produces a soft atomized cone of glare-free light, so the fixture reads as considered Scandinavian architectural specification during the day and provides warm ambient atmosphere at night.
Available in two diameters — Small (⌀ 11.8") for cluster arrangements over kitchen islands and dining tables, Large (⌀ 18.5") for solo statement applications — and in seven saturated enamel finishes: Black, White, Gold, Chrome, Orange, Yellow, Beige. Standard bulb-based E26/E27 socket with warm-white LED bulb included and pre-fitted. Dimmable with compatible dimmable bulb and triac wall dimmer. Hardwired ceiling installation.
Copenhagen, 1968
A trumpet cone.
Seven colors. Half a century.
In 1968, from the Fog & Mørup workshop in Copenhagen, two young Danish designers — Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup — introduced a shallow arched enamel-steel pendant that would become one of the defining objects of Scandinavian mid-century modernism. Its formal vocabulary was singular: an arched trumpet cone hanging semi-flush from the ceiling, its shallow profile producing a soft atomized cone of glare-free light without dominating the room's vertical silhouette.
Fog & Mørup (later Lyfa, later still absorbed into the broader Danish design manufacturing tradition) produced the fixture in a signature range of saturated enamel colors — the same seven-color palette that defines the typology today. In recent decades, the authenticated Bonderup & Thorup design is produced under license by Gubi, the Copenhagen-based design house that curates and re-issues authenticated Danish modernist classics for a new generation of specifications.
Our Semi Pendant Light is our independent contemporary interpretation of that Danish arched-enamel trumpet-cone typology — offered at an accessible modern manufacturing price point. It is not an authenticated Bonderup & Thorup / Gubi original, is not licensed by the estate or by Gubi, and is not marketed as a collectible authenticated original. For authenticated Gubi Semi Pendant reproductions, please consult Gubi (gubi.com) or authorized authenticated-design retailers directly.
Seven saturated enamel colors
Choose your Danish palette.
01 → 07
01
Black.
Deep matte-glossy black enamel — the most-ordered finish. Reads as considered graphic architectural specification against any interior palette. Correct for modern American kitchens, industrial-loft dining rooms, and contemporary residential where the fixture should signal considered upscale specification with graphic clarity.
02
White.
Clean glossy white enamel — Scandinavian purity register. Practically disappears against white ceilings and light interiors while providing full functional pendant illumination. Correct for Scandinavian kitchens, minimalist bedrooms, and interiors that resist visual noise.
03
Gold.
Warm saturated saffron gold — reads as considered upscale accent. Pairs beautifully with warm-wood cabinetry, brass hardware, and traditional-transitional American kitchen specifications. Correct for warm dining rooms and boutique-hospitality applications.
04
Chrome.
Polished chrome-plated steel — reads as considered luxury-industrial gesture. The polished finish reflects the surrounding interior color palette, becoming part of the room's overall composition. Correct for modern-luxury kitchens, industrial-loft dining, and boutique-restaurant hospitality specifications.
05
Orange.
Warm terracotta orange enamel — the historically-correct playful Danish accent color. Reads as considered colorful specification in neutral palettes. Correct for creative-studio kitchens, playful modern dining, kids' spaces, and interiors that welcome intentional colorful accent.
06
Yellow.
Bright sunny saturated yellow enamel — the boldest playful Danish accent. Punches through neutral American interior palettes as intentional colorful accent. Correct for modern farmhouse kitchens, playful family dining, creative workspaces, and kids' study spaces.
07
Beige.
Muted warm beige enamel — reads as considered Japandi-neutral accent. Pairs beautifully with warm-wood furniture, natural linens, and interiors that already commit to earthy botanical palettes. Correct for warm-neutral dining rooms and Japandi kitchen specifications.
Mixed clusters
Combine.
Order multiple colors within a single kitchen island or dining cluster for playful Danish-modernist register — Black + White + Gold is a classic triple; Yellow + Orange + Beige is a warm colorful triple; Chrome + Black + Gold reads as considered luxury cluster. Trade programs available for hospitality specifications.
Two sizes
Cluster. Or solo.
S / L
S.
Size 01 · Small
⌀ 11.8" × H 5.9"
30 × 15 cm

The cluster-arrangement scale. Correct for kitchen-island cluster installations (row of 2-3-4 pendants over a standard 6-8 ft kitchen island), dining-table cluster arrangements (row of 3 over a standard rectangular dining table), and bedside single-pendant installations. The compact 11.8" diameter allows multiple fixtures to hang in coordinated cluster without visual overcrowding. Most-ordered size.
L.
Size 02 · Large
⌀ 18.5" × H 9.3"
47 × 23.5 cm

The solo-statement scale. Correct for solo-pendant installations over a round dining table (recommended for 42-54" round tables), foyer entryway welcome-moment single pendants, primary bedroom over-bed single fixtures, and boutique-hospitality reception-desk single pendants. The 18.5" diameter provides substantial visual presence as considered architectural statement without requiring cluster-arrangement complexity.
Where the Semi lives
Six rooms it belongs in.
01
Application 01 · Primary
Kitchen island cluster arrangements.
The Semi's primary and most-ordered application. Cluster 2-3-4 Small (⌀ 11.8") pendants in a row over a standard 6-8 ft kitchen island, hung 30-36" above the counter surface. The semi-flush shallow profile keeps ceiling clearance generous even in 8-ft-ceiling rooms; the soft atomized cone of downward light provides task illumination at the counter without harsh glare. Black is the most-ordered kitchen-island finish; White for Scandinavian minimalist kitchens; Chrome for modern-industrial luxury; Yellow or Orange for playful farmhouse specifications. Mixed-color clusters (Black + White + Gold) available.
02
Application 02
Dining rooms.
Cluster 3 Small pendants in a row over a rectangular dining table (hung 30-32" above the tabletop), or install one Large solo over a round dining table (42-54" table diameter). The soft cone of atomized non-dazzling light produces the ambient warm dining register that upscale American residential specifications have championed for decades. Gold enamel is the most-ordered dining-room finish for warm dinner-party register; Black for graphic architectural clarity; Beige for warm-neutral Japandi-adjacent dining specifications.
03
Application 03
Bedside pendants.
Install one Small pendant on each side of a bed at approximately shoulder-height for a seated reader — an alternative to traditional bedside table lamps that liberates the nightstand surface for books, alarm clocks, and personal items. The semi-flush shallow profile keeps the pendants visually restrained above the bed rather than dominating the sightline. Black or White for minimalist primary bedrooms; Gold or Beige for warm-boutique register.
04
Application 04
Entryways & foyers.
One Large pendant as solo statement over an entryway console, or a row of 2-3 Small pendants along an entry hallway. The semi-flush shallow profile is particularly correct for standard-height entryway ceilings (8-9 ft) where dropped-pendant chandeliers would create head-clearance problems. Warm-color enamel finishes (Gold, Beige, Orange, Yellow) read as welcoming warm entrance register; Black or Chrome for contemporary graphic sophistication.
05
Application 05
Powder rooms & kids' spaces.
The Small pendant's compact scale and semi-flush profile make it correct for small-footprint applications — powder-room ceiling above the vanity, kids' bedroom ceiling, walk-in closet installations, and small-office ceiling fixtures. Yellow or Orange for playful kids' spaces; Chrome for modern-luxury powder-room specifications; White for minimalist Scandinavian children's rooms. The impact-resistant enamel steel construction is child-safe (unlike glass pendant fixtures which can shatter if impacted).
06
Application 06 · Hospitality ∩
Boutique restaurants & hospitality.
The Semi is a specified fixture for boutique-restaurant bar-seat cluster installations (row of Small pendants over a 10-15 ft bar), boutique-hotel reception-desk solo Large pendants, boutique-hospitality dining-room cluster arrangements, coffee-shop counter installations, retail-boutique display lighting, and multi-unit residential architectural specifications. Mixed-color clusters (rainbow of 5-7 colors) available for playful hospitality register; monochromatic clusters for architectural sophistication. Trade programs and matched-cluster coordination available.
Installation
Hardwired ceiling mount.
The Semi ships as a hardwired ceiling-mount pendant requiring licensed-electrician installation to your ceiling junction box. The included ceiling canopy conceals the wiring connection; the 59" cord provides installation-time height adjustment (shorter for standard 8-ft ceilings, longer for 9-12 ft installations). We strongly recommend licensed-electrician installation to comply with local electrical codes and to ensure warranty coverage.
Bulb included and pre-fitted. The Semi ships with a warm-white E26/E27 LED bulb pre-installed for immediate use. E26/E27 replacements are the American residential standard bulb base — widely available at Home Depot, Lowe's, Amazon, and any grocery store (search "E26 LED bulb 40W equivalent warm white 2700K"). For guaranteed dimming, swap the included bulb for a dimmable E26 warm-white LED (check package for "dimmable" label) and control brightness via a triac-compatible wall dimmer switch (Lutron Diva and Caseta triac dimmers are known LED-compatible).
Plug-in cord alternative available. For rental applications or installations where hardwiring is impractical, an optional plug-in cord conversion (with 5m/196" cord and standard wall-outlet plug) is available at order time — contact support@stuberlighting.com before ordering to specify the plug-in cord alternative. The plug-in version can be hung from a ceiling hook and routed to a wall outlet without electrician installation.

Questions.
Is this an authenticated Gubi Semi Pendant? ∩
No. The Semi Pendant Light is our independent contemporary interpretation of the celebrated 1968 Danish arched-enamel trumpet-cone pendant typology introduced by Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup at Fog & Mørup in Copenhagen. It is not an authenticated Gubi Semi Pendant, is not manufactured under license from Gubi, is not licensed by the Bonderup or Thorup estates, and is not marketed as a collectible authenticated original.
For authenticated Gubi-licensed Semi Pendant reproductions, please consult Gubi directly (gubi.com) or authorized authenticated-design retailers such as DWR (Design Within Reach), YLighting, Lumens, and specialty Scandinavian-design galleries. Our Semi is an accessible independent interpretation of the Danish arched-enamel trumpet-cone typology at a modern manufacturing price point.
Which color for my kitchen or dining room? ∩
Depends on your kitchen or dining palette commitment. Black is our most-ordered kitchen-island finish — reads as considered graphic architectural specification against any counter palette. White for minimalist Scandinavian kitchens with white counters and cabinetry. Chrome for modern-industrial luxury kitchens with stainless-steel appliances. Gold is our most-ordered dining-room finish — warm saffron for warm dinner-party register. Beige for warm-neutral Japandi-adjacent dining. Yellow or Orange for playful modern-farmhouse register and creative-studio kitchens.
For cluster arrangements (3-4 pendants over an island or dining table), consider: Black + White + Black + White for graphic minimalist rhythm; Black + Gold + Black for warm-luxury contrast; Yellow + Orange + Yellow for saturated playful accent; or a full rainbow Black + White + Gold + Chrome + Orange + Yellow + Beige for Danish-modernist boutique-hospitality register.
Small or Large — how do I choose? ∩
Small (⌀ 11.8") for clusters. Large (⌀ 18.5") for solo. The Small is calibrated for cluster arrangements — hang 2-3-4 in a row over a 6-8 ft kitchen island, or 3 in a row over a rectangular dining table. Multiple Small pendants read as considered Danish-modernist rhythm without visual overcrowding. Also correct for bedside single installations, powder-room ceilings, and kids' bedrooms.
The Large is calibrated for solo-statement installations — one pendant over a round dining table (42-54" diameter), one pendant as entryway welcome-moment statement, one pendant as primary-bedroom over-bed statement, or one pendant as boutique-hospitality reception-desk fixture. A single Large provides substantial visual presence without requiring cluster coordination. For very large kitchen islands (10-15 ft) or grand dining tables (60-72" round), consider a cluster of 2-3 Large pendants for proportional balance.
How high should I hang it? ∩
Kitchen island: 30-36" above the counter surface. This positions the bottom of the shade at approximately 65-70" above the floor — high enough to avoid line-of-sight interference with standing kitchen conversation, low enough to focus warm ambient light on the counter work surface. For very tall users (over 6 ft), increase to 36-40" clearance. For islands where seated bar-stool conversation is the primary use, reduce to 30-32" clearance for intimate warm-ambient register.
Dining table: 30-32" above the tabletop. This positions the light source at correct dinner-party register — bright enough to illuminate the tabletop and food, warm enough to not glare into seated diners' eyes. Entryway/foyer: 78-84" clearance to the floor (allowing tall guests to pass beneath without ducking). Bedside: at approximately shoulder-level for a seated reader in bed — typically 24-30" above the mattress top. The 59" cord provides ample installation-time adjustment range.
Can I dim it? ∩
Yes — swap the included bulb for a dimmable E26 LED + install a wall dimmer. The included warm-white LED bulb may or may not be dimmable-rated depending on the specific batch. For guaranteed dimming, swap the included bulb for a dimmable E26 warm-white LED (check package for "dimmable" label — not all E26 LEDs are dimmable) and control brightness via a triac-compatible wall dimmer switch installed in place of the standard on/off switch. Lutron Diva and Caseta triac dimmers are known LED-compatible.
At 30-50% brightness the fixture reads at its most atmospheric — particularly correct for evening dining-room register and pre-sleep bedside register. At full brightness the fixture provides task-appropriate illumination for kitchen-counter work. Cluster installations (3-4 pendants over an island or dining table) benefit particularly from dimming — full brightness for daytime task work, 30-50% for evening entertaining.
Hardwired only? What about renters? ∩
Plug-in cord conversion available on request. The standard Semi ships as a hardwired ceiling-mount pendant requiring licensed-electrician installation. For rental applications or installations where hardwiring is impractical, we offer an optional plug-in cord conversion — 5m/196" fabric-covered cord with standard wall-outlet plug, allowing the pendant to be hung from a ceiling hook and routed to a nearby wall outlet without electrician installation.
Contact support@stuberlighting.com before placing your order to specify the plug-in cord alternative — the hardwired canopy will be replaced with plug-in cord assembly (single option; not both included). Plug-in installation requires a standard ceiling hook (available at any hardware store) and awareness of cord aesthetic — the 196" cord provides ample routing flexibility but produces a visible cord from ceiling hook to wall outlet.
How do I clean the enamel finish? ∩
Soft microfibre and mild soap. The factory-cured enamel finish is significantly more scratch-resistant and colour-stable than standard painted finishes — it will remain visually consistent for many years of typical residential use. For regular cleaning: wipe with soft dry microfibre cloth. For fingerprints and kitchen grease: slightly damp microfibre with mild dish soap solution then dry immediately with a clean cloth to prevent water spotting. For the polished Chrome variant: use dedicated chrome polish (Weiman or 3M chrome polish) applied to a microfibre cloth for periodic maintenance.
Never use abrasive scouring pads, steel wool, or solvent-based cleaners on the enamel finish — will produce visible scratches and damage the colour-stable factory cure. For kitchen installations where the pendant accumulates cooking grease over time, wipe monthly with mild degreasing dish soap solution to prevent grease buildup that dulls the enamel gloss.
Are cluster mixed-color orders possible? ∩
Yes — order multiple colors within a single cluster. For coordinated cluster arrangements over a kitchen island or dining table, order multiple color variants at checkout (e.g. 3 × Small: 1 Black + 1 Gold + 1 Black) — each pendant ships separately-boxed but coordinates as considered cluster on installation. Popular combinations: Black + White + Black (graphic rhythm), Black + Gold + Black (warm-luxury), Yellow + Orange + Yellow (saturated playful), Black + White + Gold + Chrome (Danish-modernist quartet), or the full rainbow of all 7 colors for boutique-hospitality register.
For custom mixed-cluster projects (specific quantities of specific colors, matched-batch coordination), contact support@stuberlighting.com before placing your order. Standard 4-6 week production lead times apply; matched-cluster orders may require 6-8 weeks for guaranteed batch-consistent enamel coloring.
Trade programs and hospitality installations? ∩
Yes — the Semi is a specified fixture for boutique-restaurant bar-seat cluster installations, boutique-hotel reception-desk solo Large pendants, boutique-hospitality dining-room cluster arrangements, coffee-shop counter installations, retail-boutique display lighting, corporate open-plan office fit-outs, and multi-unit residential architectural specifications where the Danish-modernist trumpet-cone register reads as considered upscale interior specification.
Mixed-color cluster orders (rainbow of 5-7 colors) available for playful hospitality register; monochromatic cluster orders (all-Black or all-White) for architectural sophistication. Bulk pricing for orders of 20+ units. Production lead times run 4-6 weeks; larger project orders may run 8-12 weeks depending on quantity.
