— A design tribute —

The Poppy is Stuberlighting's tribute to the iconic VP9 portable lamp — designed by Verner Panton in 1968 as part of his Flowerpot series for Louis Poulsen, now produced under license by &Tradition. The Poppy is not an authentic VP9 product; it's an independently manufactured homage offered at a fraction of the original's price.

If you want the certified article with full design provenance and manufacturer warranty, we encourage you to purchase from &Tradition directly. If you love the silhouette and want it across your home in colors that suit your interior — at a price that makes sense for a side table — the Poppy is built for you.

In 1968, Verner Panton designed a small portable lamp shaped like a mushroom resting on a cylinder — the upper hemisphere covering a smaller hemisphere underneath, with the bulb hidden between them. He called it the Flowerpot VP9. It became one of the most-recognizable Mid-Century lamp silhouettes ever made — appearing in design museums, interior design textbooks, and high-end Scandinavian homes for over fifty years. By the 2020s, the silhouette had crossed back into Y2K revival aesthetics — the same shape now showing up in young Maximalist apartments and bright Cottagecore bedrooms.

The Poppy is built in that tradition. The same hemisphere-on-cylinder proportions, the same friendly Mid-Century silhouette, now updated with two modern capabilities the original never had: a USB-rechargeable battery (so the lamp moves with you, no cord required) and a touch-dimming top (so the brightness adjusts with a finger, no switch to fumble for). Sixteen color choices — from neutral Matte Black and Beige for transitional interiors to vibrant Klein Blue, Sakura Pink, and Scarlet for Y2K revival, Cottagecore, and bold Maximalist palettes.

Integrated LED, no bulbs to replace. USB rechargeable battery. Built to UL safety standards. One compact size (6.3" diameter, 11.6" tall) — designed for bedside tables, desks, café tables, and any surface where a small portable lamp earns its keep.

What makes the Poppy

01

Cordless · USB rechargeable

The Poppy charges via standard USB — the same connector your phone uses, so no proprietary adapter to misplace. A full charge powers the lamp for multiple hours of continuous use at typical brightness. Carry it from the bedroom to the patio, from the desk to the dining table; no outlet required wherever the moment is.

02

Touch dimming top

Tap the top of the mushroom dome to turn on; hold to dim through the full brightness range; tap again to turn off. The entire control surface is the lamp itself — no switch, no cord button, no remote. The touch sensor sits under the dome surface, so the action is visible (you watch the light respond to your finger) but the hardware stays invisible.

03

Sixteen colors · the full Mid-Century palette

The original VP9 was released in a small range of carefully chosen colors. The Poppy expands to sixteen — five neutrals (Matte Black, Matte White, Beige Gray, Matte Beige, Light Sand), three deep tones (Ebony, Dark Green, Red-brown), and eight vivid Y2K and Mid-Century revival colors (Klein Blue, Sakura Pink, Scarlet, Sky Blue, Stone Blue, Signal Green, Yellow, Flesh Pink, Light White). Order multiple in different colors for a Mid-Century color story across the home.

04

Integrated LED · 50,000 hour life

The light source is integrated LED — not socketed, not replaceable. At 50,000 hours of rated life (~30 years at typical evening use), no bulb replacements over the lamp's lifespan. Low 3-watt power consumption means the battery lasts longer between charges and the lamp stays cool to the touch even after extended use.

05

Iconic mushroom silhouette · the right proportions

The mushroom-on-cylinder geometry of the original VP9 is so well-calibrated it appears in design textbooks as a case study in proportional harmony. The Poppy reproduces the canonical proportions — 6.3" diameter for the hemisphere, 11.6" total height, slim cylinder base. The silhouette reads correctly from any angle; the visual weight balances perfectly at standard table height.

— On Klein Blue and the Y2K return —

"Every iconic color comes back. Klein Blue is back."

In 1958, French artist Yves Klein patented an ultramarine pigment so deeply saturated it appeared to absorb the surrounding light — International Klein Blue (IKB). The color became one of the most-photographed in 20th century art. By the 2020s, it had crossed back into mainstream design — Klein Blue accent walls, furniture, and now the Poppy lamp in its full iconic intensity.

A Klein Blue Poppy reads as a deliberate Y2K and art-history reference — the kind of accent piece that signals knowing taste rather than just bright color. Pair with a cream wall, a walnut bedside table, and let the blue do the work.

— Where it lives —

Recommended spaces

Bedside table · Matte Black, Klein Blue, or Sakura Pink

The signature application. The Poppy's compact 6.3" footprint fits any bedside table; the touch dimming eliminates fumbling for a switch in the dark; cordless means no awkward cord routing behind the headboard. Matte Black for sophisticated minimalist bedrooms; Klein Blue for Y2K maximalist; Sakura Pink for soft romantic.

Desk or home office · Yellow, Signal Green, or Stone Blue

A bright Poppy on a home office desk adds personality without the visual weight of a traditional lamp. Carry it to the dining table for evening work; charge overnight at the desk. The vivid colors read as creative-class signaling — particularly suited to designers, photographers, and anyone whose workspace doubles as identity.

Vanity or dressing table · Sakura Pink, Flesh Pink, or Matte White

The soft pastels in the Poppy range work beautifully on a vanity or dressing table — the Mid-Century silhouette pairs with a circular mirror, the soft glow provides flattering ambient light for getting ready. Touch dimming lets you adjust brightness for morning routines vs evening relaxation.

Tea room, café, or restaurant · matched color batch

A single matched color across multiple café tables creates a deliberate Mid-Century atmosphere — particularly striking in Matte Black, Ebony, or Klein Blue. Cordless means no power cords visible on tables; touch dimming allows individual table adjustment without staff intervention. Email us for bulk pricing on orders of 10+ units.

Color collection · multiple Poppies across the home

Mid-Century interior designers often used the same silhouette in different colors across a single home — Matte Black bedside in the primary bedroom, Klein Blue on the living room console, Sakura Pink on the vanity, Yellow on the office desk. The Poppy's price point ($89) makes this approach actually feasible — a curated color collection without committing to thousands of dollars.

Questions

Is this an authentic Verner Panton VP9? +

No — the Poppy is a design tribute to the iconic VP9, not an authentic &Tradition product.

The authentic VP9 (Flowerpot VP9 Portable) is a Mid-Century lamp designed by Verner Panton in 1968 as part of his Flowerpot series, originally for Louis Poulsen and now produced under license by &Tradition. The authentic article carries the original designer's name, manufacturer markings, included warranty, and design provenance — priced accordingly (typically $300-400 retail).

The Poppy is independently manufactured by Stuberlighting as a tribute to the silhouette. It uses similar proportions (the canonical hemisphere-on-cylinder geometry) and offers the same touch-dimming portable functionality, but it is not a licensed reproduction. If you want the authentic article with its full design heritage, we recommend purchasing directly from &Tradition or an authorized dealer.

If you want the shape, the proportions, and the visual presence in colors that suit your home — at a price that fits a typical residential lighting budget — the Poppy is built for that purpose.

Which of the 16 colors should I choose? +

For sophisticated minimalist homes: Matte Black, Ebony, Matte White, or Beige Gray. The safest and most photographed colors; reads as deliberate Mid-Century design rather than a color statement.

For Y2K revival or Maximalist: Klein Blue (the strongest Y2K signal in the range), Scarlet, Yellow, or Signal Green. Vivid pop colors that anchor a Mid-Century-meets-Y2K aesthetic.

For Cottagecore or romantic Mid-Century: Sakura Pink, Flesh Pink, Red-brown, or Dark Green. Soft natural tones that pair with patterned wallpaper, botanical accents, and warm wood furniture.

For Scandinavian or Earthy: Matte Beige, Light Sand, Sky Blue, or Stone Blue. Muted tones that complement Scandinavian-leaning interiors and Earthy palettes.

Most ordered: Matte Black for safety; Klein Blue for boldness; Sakura Pink for romance. Many customers order 2-3 colors for different rooms.

How long does the battery last between charges? +

Battery runtime varies with brightness setting. At full brightness: roughly 5-7 hours of continuous use. At low intimate dim: 12-15+ hours. Typical evening bedside use (2-3 hours at medium brightness): about 1 week per charge.

Charge time: 3-4 hours from empty to full via standard USB. The Poppy can also be used while plugged in — useful if you've forgotten to charge ahead of time. The lithium-ion battery is designed for thousands of charge cycles before degradation.

Can I dim the Poppy? +

Yes — via touch dimming on the top dome.

Tap once to turn on at full brightness. Hold your finger on the top dome to begin dimming — the light gradually reduces while your finger stays in contact, until you remove your finger at the desired brightness. Tap again to turn off; tap once more to return to the last-used brightness setting.

The touch sensor responds to skin contact only — won't activate from soft fabric, plastic, or accidental brushes. Easier than fumbling for a switch in the dark, and the dimming is smooth and continuous (not stepped).

Will the colored finish chip or fade over time? +

No — automotive-grade spray finish is engineered for long-term durability.

The Poppy is finished using the same multi-stage spray process found in premium automotive manufacturing — undercoat, color coat, and protective clear coat. This delivers a surface that resists chips, scratches, UV yellowing, and color degradation far beyond standard powder coats or single-stage paint.

Avoid abrasive cleaners or rough sponges (use only damp soft cloth for cleaning). With normal care, the color should look as good after 10+ years as the day you received it.

Can I order in bulk for restaurants or hospitality? +

Yes — bulk pricing available for orders of 10+ units.

Restaurants, cafés, hotels, and hospitality customers increasingly use cordless table lamps in place of candles — better atmosphere, no fire risk, no wax. The Poppy fits this category cleanly: cordless eliminates power cord routing across tables; touch dimming allows individual table customization; multiple colors create deliberate brand atmosphere.

Email service@stuberlighting.com with your order quantity, color preference (matched or mixed), and desired Kelvin temperature. We coordinate matched-batch finish across all units for visual consistency, and offer commercial pricing for orders of 10+ units.
