Handcrafted bone china · pendant no. 10

Piega.

Pleated ivory porcelain. Hand-pulled ribbed grooves. Eight configurations from single-pendant to eighteen-light cluster chandelier.

The Piega Pendant Light is our tribute to the handcrafted bone china pendant tradition — an ivory-milky porcelain shade with deep vertical pleated ribbing hand-pulled on the ceramic wheel, mounted on a black wire suspension with matching ceiling rose. The bone china wall is calibrated thin enough to catch warm E14 bulb light in soft even ambient character while retaining the sculptural pleated silhouette. Sold as a single pendant in three sizes for compact-to-mid rooms, or as a cluster chandelier in five configurations for statement dining, double-height living, and grand hospitality spaces.

Because every Piega is hand-pulled and hand-fired, small variations between individual pieces are inherent to the material — the pleat depth, the glaze thickness, the ivory saturation will vary slightly. This is not manufacturing inconsistency. This is how honest handcrafted bone china behaves.

On bone china, the wheel, and the hand

Ivory clay. Pulled ribs. Fired to porcelain.

Bone china (Chinese: 骨瓷) is a specific porcelain body developed in 18th-century England — a mixture of kaolin clay, feldspar, and calcined animal bone ash. The bone ash gives the finished porcelain its characteristic milky-ivory whiteness, translucency under light, and unusual chip resistance for a porcelain material. Fired at approximately 1200-1300°C, then glazed and re-fired, producing the glossy porcelain surface with the warm ivory undertone you see on your Piega.

The pleated ribbed texture is hand-pulled on the ceramic wheel — while the clay body is spinning on the potter's wheel and still soft, the artisan draws a shaped tool downward along the exterior surface, creating the vertical grooves that give the Piega its signature architectural pleated silhouette. Each groove is pulled individually; each Piega shade shows subtle handmade variation in the exact pleat depth, spacing, and finish.

The bone china wall is calibrated thin enough to catch warm E14 bulb light in the softest even ambient register — the ivory undertone reads as considered warm glow, and the pleated ribbing catches light in subtle vertical shadow lines that emphasize the shade's tapered form. Eye-friendly glow character. Long-term-use appropriate. Perfect for spaces where the fixture will be viewed at close reading distance.

Five cluster configurations.

i.

Group 01

Single pendants — three sizes.

Small

⌀ 5.1" × H 8.3"

13 × 21 cm

The mini pendant scale. Perfect for powder-room ceilings above vanities, bedside suspension, hallway ceilings, and reading nooks. Also correct as trio over a compact kitchen island (spaced 20-26" apart).

Medium

⌀ 7.1" × H 10.2"

18 × 26 cm

The everyday size. Single over a small dining table or breakfast nook, over an entryway console, or trio over a standard kitchen island (spaced 28-32" apart). Also suits master bedroom over-bed suspension.

Large

⌀ 9.4" × H 14.1"

24 × 36 cm

The statement single. Correct over a full-size dining table (seating 4-6), generous kitchen islands (trio at 34-38" apart), and entryway foyers with 9-11 ft ceilings. The most sculptural of the single-pendant sizes.

ii.

Group 02

Cluster chandeliers — five configurations.

3-light

⌀ 9.4" × H 14.1"

Compact cluster for breakfast nooks, small dining tables, and intimate entryway foyers. The most versatile of the cluster configurations.

5-light

⌀ 10.6" × H 17.3"

Mid-scale cluster for standard dining tables (4-6 seats), living-room-corner statements, and mid-scale foyers with 9-10 ft ceilings.

7-light

⌀ 12.2" × H 29.5"

Elevated cluster with dramatic vertical drop. Correct for double-height living rooms, over grand dining tables, and vaulted-ceiling great rooms (10-12 ft).

12-light

⌀ 16.5" × H 33.4"

Junction box 15.7"

Grand statement cluster. Correct for oversized dining rooms, entryway atriums, boutique-hotel lobbies with 12-14 ft ceilings.

18-light ★

⌀ 20.4" × H 41.3"

Junction box 19.7"

Maximum-scale statement. Grand estate entryways, double-height dining rooms, hotel lobbies and hospitality atriums. The primary architectural mark of the room.

The signature

The pleat is the point.

The Piega's defining detail is the deep vertical pleated ribbing hand-pulled while the bone china clay is still spinning on the potter's wheel. Each groove catches downlight along its ridge and casts a subtle vertical shadow line down the pleat valley — the effect gives the fixture visual texture even when unlit, and produces a soft dappled glow character when illuminated.

Because the pleats are pulled by hand, individual shades will show subtle variation in the exact pleat depth, spacing, and vertical alignment. Multi-pendant cluster fixtures use shades matched from the same production batch to preserve visual coherence across the arrangement, but the shades within a cluster will still show gentle individual handmade character.

Where the Piega lives

Seven rooms it belongs in.

Room 01 · Single Small

Powder rooms and half-baths.

The Small single (5.1") is the perfect scale for powder-room ceilings above vanities — small footprint, warm bone china glow, softly-diffused eye-friendly light for washing hands and evening register. Correct for tight-quarter half-baths where full-scale pendant would overwhelm.

Room 02 · Single Medium trio or Single Large single

Kitchen islands.

Trio of Medium single (7.1") spaced 28-32" apart over a compact-to-standard kitchen island; single Large (9.4") over a compact island where a single pendant is preferred. Position the shade bottom 30-36" above the counter surface for correct sight-line above seated diners.

Room 03 · 3-Light or 5-Light cluster · Single Large

Dining rooms.

A single Large (9.4") over a round table (4-seat); a 3-Light cluster over a compact-to-mid dining table; a 5-Light cluster over a standard 4-6 seat dining table. Position the shade bottom 30-36" above the table surface. Warm bone china glow reads particularly beautifully for evening dinners.

Room 04 · Single Small · 3 or 5-Light cluster

Entryway foyers and hallways.

A Small single as considered welcome moment on entry to a modest foyer; a 3-Light or 5-Light cluster for grander foyers with 10-12 ft ceilings. The bone china register signals sophisticated craft-forward interior from the moment guests enter.

Room 05 · Single Small · Single Medium

Bedrooms and bedside suspension.

A Small over each bedside nightstand (matched pair) as ceiling-suspension replacement for corded table lamps — clears the nightstand surface for phone, water, book. A Medium over-bed for master bedroom suspension in Japandi or Scandinavian bedrooms.

Room 06 · 7-Light or 12-Light cluster

Double-height living rooms and great rooms.

7-Light for vaulted-ceiling great rooms (10-12 ft), 12-Light for grand double-height rooms (12-14 ft). The dramatic vertical drop of the cluster arrangement becomes the room's primary architectural sculpture — the pleated bone china character reads as considered upscale craft-forward interior specification.

Room 07 · 12-Light or 18-Light cluster ★

Boutique hospitality and commercial.

Grand statement clusters for boutique-hotel lobby atriums, restaurant entrance vestibules, hospitality reception spaces, and multi-unit residential specifications. Multi-size mixed installations produce coordinated Piega-family signature across differently-scaled spaces. Trade programs and custom canopy specifications available.

Installation

Hardwired · adjustable · professional install recommended.

All Piega configurations mount via a matching ceiling rose canopy that covers a standard J-box connection. Single pendants ship with 59" (150 cm) of black wire suspension; cluster chandeliers ship with pre-configured wire lengths appropriate to the number of lights and the drop height. Wire heights are adjustable during installation for correct clearance above kitchen islands, dining tables, and other surfaces.

Professional electrician installation is strongly recommended for all Piega configurations, particularly for the cluster chandeliers (7-Light, 12-Light, 18-Light) — the multi-shade arrangements require careful positioning and secure J-box mounting. The 12-Light and 18-Light clusters require larger-format junction boxes (15.7" and 19.7" respectively) — verify your ceiling J-box capacity before ordering these configurations, or contact us for canopy-plate adapters.

Bulb included. Every Piega ships with warm-white LED bulbs (one per socket) pre-fitted in the E14 sockets, calibrated to 2700K for correct warm-glow character through the bone china shades. Cluster chandeliers ship with multiple bulbs — one per Piega shade. For dimming, swap in dimmable warm-white LEDs. Maximum 40W per socket.

Before you buy

Questions.

Which configuration for which room?

Single Small (5.1") — powder rooms, bedside suspension, hallways, kids' rooms, compact reading nooks. The mini scale. Single Medium (7.1") — trio over standard kitchen islands, single over breakfast nooks or entryway consoles, over-bed suspension. The everyday size. Single Large (9.4") — single over full-size dining tables, statement over compact islands. 3-Light cluster — compact dining tables, small entryways. 5-Light cluster — standard 4-6 seat dining tables, living-room-corner statement. 7-Light cluster — vaulted-ceiling great rooms (10-12 ft), grand dining. 12-Light and 18-Light — double-height rooms, boutique-hotel lobbies, and hospitality atriums (12-14+ ft ceilings). Not appropriate for standard 8-9 ft ceilings — the scale will overwhelm.

Will individual shades look identical in a cluster?

Very close, with subtle handmade variation. Cluster chandeliers use bone china shades matched from the same production batch to preserve visual coherence across the arrangement. However, because each shade is hand-pulled on the ceramic wheel and hand-fired, subtle individual variation in pleat depth, glaze thickness, and ivory saturation is inherent to the material and will remain visible even within a matched-batch cluster. This is not manufacturing inconsistency — it is how honest handcrafted bone china behaves. Most customers find the paired-but-not-identical character adds craft-forward interest to the cluster arrangement.

Can I use the Small in a powder room or bathroom?

Yes — for powder rooms and half-baths, away from shower moisture. The Piega is IP20-rated (indoor dry locations only), which means it is acceptable for powder-room ceilings above vanities where there is no shower or bathtub steam, but it should not be installed in full bathrooms with active shower or bath humidity, or directly above sink basins where water splash is likely. Correct powder-room installation: over the vanity mirror, at least 6-8 ft above the counter, in a room without shower or bathtub. If your bathroom has a shower or bath, use the Piega elsewhere and specify a dedicated IP44+ bathroom-rated fixture for the shower zone.

About the included bulbs — and can I upgrade?

Bulbs included — one per Piega shade. Single pendants ship with 1 bulb pre-fitted; cluster chandeliers ship with 3, 5, 7, 12, or 18 bulbs (matching the configuration). Standard non-dimmable warm-white LED bulbs pre-fitted in the E14 sockets, calibrated to 2700K for correct warm-glow character through the bone china. If you want to upgrade: the sockets accept any standard E14 bulbs. For dimming, swap in dimmable warm-white E14 LEDs. For vintage character, E14 filament Edison bulbs (LED equivalent recommended over incandescent for safety) provide amber warm tones. Widely available at Home Depot, IKEA, Amazon. Maximum 40W per socket.

Do the 12-Light and 18-Light need a special junction box?

Yes — verify capacity before ordering. The 12-Light cluster requires a 15.7" junction box; the 18-Light cluster requires a 19.7" junction box. Standard residential J-boxes may not accommodate these larger cluster canopies — verify your ceiling J-box capacity and structural support before ordering. If your existing J-box is smaller than 15.7"/19.7", we offer canopy-plate adapters that fit standard-size J-boxes while presenting the correctly-sized canopy for the cluster. Contact support@stuberlighting.com before ordering large clusters to confirm installation compatibility.

Can I dim it?

Yes with the correct combination. The pre-fitted bulbs are non-dimmable. For dimming, swap the included bulbs for dimmable E14 warm-white LEDs (widely available; check package for "dimmable" label), and wire the fixture to a triac-compatible wall dimmer (Lutron Diva and Caseta triac dimmers are known LED-compatible). At 30-60% brightness the bone china pleated shades read at their most atmospheric register — particularly correct for evening dinner ambient and pre-sleep bedroom register. Note that cluster chandeliers with many bulbs may require dimmer switches rated for higher wattage — consult a licensed electrician for correct dimmer specification.

I'm a renter — can I plug it in instead of hardwiring?

Yes for single pendants only — we offer a plug-in cord adapter accessory that converts single Piega pendants (S/M/L) from hardwired to plug-in mode. The plug-in cord is a 5m (196") black fabric-covered cord with an inline switch and standard region plug, designed to hang from a ceiling hook and plug into any wall outlet. Cluster chandeliers (3/5/7/12/18-Light) require hardwired installation — the multi-shade wiring is not compatible with the plug-in adapter. Contact support@stuberlighting.com before ordering (or leave a note at checkout) to request the plug-in adapter for single pendants.

How do I clean the bone china?

Gentle porcelain-safe cleaning. Wipe the bone china shade with a soft dry microfibre cloth for regular dust; for stubborn marks, dampen microfibre with mild dish soap solution or diluted standard glass cleaner (Windex-type products are safe on glazed porcelain), then dry immediately with a fresh cloth. Pay particular attention to the pleated grooves — dust tends to settle into the deep vertical pleat valleys; a soft dry paintbrush or feather duster works well for getting into the grooves without abrasion. Never use abrasive scouring pads, steel wool, or bleach-based cleaners — all will damage the glazed porcelain surface permanently.

Trade programs and hospitality installations?

Yes — the Piega is a specified fixture for boutique-hotel lobby atriums (12/18-Light), restaurant dining rooms (5/7-Light), boutique hospitality reception spaces, powder rooms and guest baths (Single Small), boutique retail interiors, MCM and Japandi residential projects, and multi-unit residential specifications where the handcrafted bone china register reads as considered upscale craft-forward interior specification. Mixed-size installations combining Single pendants over kitchen islands with cluster chandeliers over dining tables produce coordinated Piega-family signature across the home. Trade programs available; matched-batch coordination on request at no additional charge; custom canopy sizes and wire lengths on request; project management for larger orders; bulk pricing for orders of 20+ units (mix and match across configurations). Production lead times run 4-6 weeks for single pendants and small clusters; 6-8 weeks for 12-Light and 18-Light. Write to support@stuberlighting.com with your project brief.
