Orbita.
Chrome polished cylinder. Amber acrylic orb. A tribute to the Italian Space Age design tradition of the 1970s.
The Orbita Table Lamp is our tribute to the celebrated Italian Space Age design tradition — a polished chrome cylindrical base holding aloft an amber-orange acrylic globe orb, with the round warm-white bulb visible inside the shade producing a double-orb layered silhouette. Descended from the 1970s Italian space-age accent-lamp vocabulary that gave the world Fratelli Guzzini, iGuzzini, Meblo, and their contemporaries. Compact at ⌀ 11" × H 14.5", but disproportionately bold in interior presence.
Warm evening amber glow through the orange PMMA acrylic globe. E26/E27 warm-white bulb pre-fitted. Inline switch on the cord. Plug in, tap, done. No electrician required.
On chrome, orange, and the 1970s
Chrome cylinder.
Amber orb.
1970s optimism.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Italian designers rewrote what a domestic lamp could look like. The postwar economic boom, the Space Race in the background, the new industrial plastics (particularly PMMA — the optical-grade acrylic also called plexiglass), and the Radical Design movement in Milan converged into a specific visual register: chrome-plated metal, vibrant saturated colours, futuristic geometric forms, and the sense that the future had already arrived in your living room.
Companies like Fratelli Guzzini, iGuzzini, Meblo, Kartell, and Flos produced spherical PMMA-globe lamps mounted on polished chrome or aluminum bases — some hanging, some floor-standing, some compact enough for a nightstand. The colour palette leaned toward space-age orange, mustard yellow, deep amber, and translucent white. The result was a fixture typology that photographed beautifully in the pages of Domus and Abitare, permanently associated with the aspirational optimism of the era.
Our Orbita is our modern independent tribute to that vocabulary — the polished chrome cylindrical base, the amber-orange PMMA globe orb, the visible warm-white bulb producing a double-sphere layered glow through the translucent shade. Updated manufacturing at a modern accessible price point. Same warm optimistic Italian character.
The two signatures
Chrome below. Amber above.
Signature 01
The polished chrome cylinder.
A heavy-duty polished iron cylindrical base with mirror-chrome plated finish. The base is deliberately weighted to keep the compact ⌀ 11" footprint stable on standard nightstands and side tables. Reflects surrounding light in the way only real chrome can — subtle warm reflections when the surrounding interior is warm, cooler reflections when the surroundings are cool. The chrome ages beautifully with light regular cleaning; unlike painted metal, it will not chip or scratch under normal use.
Signature 02
The amber acrylic globe.
A hand-formed spherical PMMA acrylic shade in saturated amber-orange. Optically-graded acrylic (also called plexiglass or lucite) produces the same warm diffused glow character as opal glass when illuminated — softer, chip-resistant, safer for shipping. When unlit, reads as vibrant saturated orange dome; when the E26/E27 warm-white bulb is on, the shade produces the signature "double-orb" glow effect (the round white bulb visible through the translucent orange globe), one of the most-loved details of the 1970s Space Age design register.
Where the Orbita lives
Six rooms it belongs in.
Bedside nightstands.
The Orbita's primary application. Compact ⌀ 11" footprint sits comfortably on standard bedside nightstands with room for phone, water glass, book. The double-orb amber glow reads as considered evening warm register — particularly correct for pre-sleep atmospheric ambient. Matched pair on symmetrical bedsides is one of the most-loved installations.
Living-room side tables.
On a side table next to a sofa or reading chair — provides warm accent ambient in the corner of a living room without dominating. The chrome + orange combination reads as considered vintage-inspired accent that adds sophistication and 1970s optimism to interiors already committed to modern or mid-century design languages.
Home offices and workspaces.
Corner accent on a home office desk, writer's studio, or creative workspace — the chrome base and warm amber glow add MCM-designer register to workspaces typically dominated by monitor blue-light. E26 warm E27 evening glow supports late-afternoon and evening work sessions particularly well. Also correct for the small side table beside a home-office reading chair.
Entryway consoles and hallways.
A single Orbita on a hallway console beside a bowl for keys signals sophisticated vintage-inspired interior register from the moment guests enter. The chrome + orange colour combination is a strong graphic mark from every viewing angle — particularly correct for foyers where you want the accent lamp to be a conversation starter.
Kids' rooms and playful spaces.
The warm orange orb reads as considered playful in kids' bedrooms — appropriate for ocean-themed, sunset-themed, and coral-toned interiors where the amber colour reinforces the room's palette. The plug-in convenience means the fixture can be moved around the room as a child's needs change. Safe operation (low-voltage LED bulb, capped chrome, no exposed sharp edges).
Boutique hospitality and 1970s-themed interiors.
Boutique-hotel guest room bedsides, 1970s-styled Airbnb rentals, MCM and Space Age themed residential projects, and boutique retail environments where the fixture reads as considered upscale vintage-inspired specification. Matched-batch pair coordination available for symmetrical installations at no extra charge. Trade programs available.

Questions.
Is this an authenticated Fratelli Guzzini / iGuzzini original? ⊙
No. The Orbita Table Lamp is an independent Italian Mid-Century Modern Space Age design that draws on the broader 1970s Italian designer-lamp vocabulary — the chrome-cylinder-plus-spherical-shade typology that became one of the most-imitated Space Age forms of the decade. It is not a specific Fratelli Guzzini, iGuzzini, Meblo, or Harvey Guzzini historical fixture, is not manufactured by or licensed from any of these companies, and is not marketed as, or authorized under, any specific historical designer's estate. For authenticated Fratelli Guzzini or iGuzzini fixtures, we recommend consulting authorized retailers directly (fratelliguzzini.com and iguzzini.com). Our Orbita is an accessible interpretation of the Space Age lamp typology at a modern manufacturing price point.
Is the shade real glass or acrylic? ⊙
Optical-grade PMMA acrylic. The amber-orange globe shade is made from high-quality PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate — the material also known as plexiglass or lucite) rather than tinted glass. This is intentional for three reasons. First: PMMA is significantly lighter than glass, which makes shipping and handling safer without compromising the shape or optical character. Second: PMMA is much more chip-resistant than glass — an Orbita in a busy household with kids or curious pets is much less likely to suffer damage. Third: Modern optical-grade PMMA produces the same warm diffused glow character as tinted glass when illuminated with the warm-white bulb — visually virtually indistinguishable at typical viewing distance. This is also the historical material — 1970s Italian Space Age lamps were also primarily PMMA acrylic, not glass.
About the included bulb — and can I upgrade? ⊙
Bulb included. Every Orbita ships with a standard non-dimmable warm-white LED bulb pre-fitted in the E26 (US) or E27 (EU/UK/AU) socket, calibrated to 2700K for correct warm-glow character through the amber-orange globe. Plug it in, tap the inline switch, done. If you want to upgrade: the socket accepts any standard E26/E27 bulb. For dimming, swap in a dimmable warm-white LED. For maximum vintage Space Age character, an E26 filament Edison bulb (LED equivalent recommended) provides amber warm tones that pair particularly beautifully with the orange orb — the round filament-bulb silhouette visible through the translucent shade doubles down on the signature "double-orb" glow effect. Widely available at Home Depot, IKEA, Amazon. Maximum 40W.
Can I dim it? ⊙
Yes with the correct combination. The pre-fitted bulb is non-dimmable, and the inline switch on the cord operates as on/off only. For dimming, swap the included bulb for a dimmable E26/E27 warm-white LED (widely available; check package for "dimmable" label), and plug the Orbita into a wall outlet controlled by a triac-compatible wall dimmer (Lutron Diva and Caseta triac dimmers are known LED-compatible). At 30-50% brightness the amber acrylic globe catches light at its most atmospheric register — particularly correct for evening romantic ambient and pre-sleep bedside use. Vinlighting-era 1970s enthusiasts recommend dimming for the fully-authentic Space Age evening effect.
Can I buy a matched pair for twin bedsides? ⊙
Yes — matched Orbita pairs on symmetrical bedsides are one of the fixture's most-loved applications. The chrome + orange combination reads as considered coordinated Space Age accent when installed as a pair. Because the Orbita is machine-manufactured (not handcrafted), individual units are very consistent — pair units will look effectively identical, with no visible batch variation. Standard shipping practice pulls pair units from the same production batch by default. No additional charge for matched-pair ordering; simply add two to your cart at checkout.
Is 40W bright enough for reading? ⊙
For bedside and side-table use, yes — the Orbita is calibrated as an atmospheric warm accent lamp rather than a task lamp for extended detailed reading. The amber acrylic shade filters the warm white bulb into a soft amber glow that is comfortable for pre-sleep reading of standard-print books when the lamp sits at correct distance (12-24" from your reading material). For extended detailed task reading, small-print books, or paper work sessions, we recommend supplementing with a dedicated task lamp. The Orbita's purpose is warm ambient mood-setter register and 1970s Space Age accent presence — not overhead-quality task illumination.
How do I clean the chrome and acrylic? ⊙
Chrome base: wipe with soft dry microfibre cloth for regular dust; for stubborn marks or fingerprints, dampen microfibre with mild dish soap solution or diluted standard glass cleaner (Windex-type products are safe on chrome), then dry immediately with a fresh cloth to prevent water spots. Never use abrasive scouring pads, steel wool, or bleach — all will damage the chrome plating permanently. For deeper polishing, use a dedicated chrome polish product sparingly (available at auto-parts stores). Amber PMMA globe: soft dry microfibre only for regular dust; for stubborn marks, mild dish soap solution then dry immediately. Never use ammonia-based glass cleaners (Windex-type) on PMMA — ammonia damages acrylic and causes crazing over time. Never use paper towels or abrasive cloths — PMMA scratches easily.
Assembly required? ⊙
None. The Orbita ships fully assembled — the amber PMMA globe is pre-mounted on the chrome cylindrical base, the bulb is pre-fitted, and the cord and inline switch are pre-wired. Simply unbox, place on your intended surface, plug into a standard wall outlet, and tap the inline switch. No tools required, no wiring, no complications. Total setup time from opening the box to first illumination: under 60 seconds.
Trade programs and 1970s-themed installations? ⊙
Yes — the Orbita is a specified fixture for boutique-hotel guest room bedsides (matched pairs), 1970s-themed and Space Age styled Airbnb short-term rentals, MCM and Retro residential renovations, boutique-hospitality registration spaces, and multi-unit residential specifications where the chrome + orange Italian Space Age register reads as considered upscale interior specification. Matched-pair coordination available at no extra charge. Trade programs, project management for larger orders, and bulk pricing for orders of 20+ units. Production lead times run 4-6 weeks. A note on lineage
Designer Tribute Note. "The Orbita is our tribute to the 1970s Italian Space Age lamp vocabulary — the chrome cylinder, the amber orb, the visible warm bulb producing the signature double-sphere glow. Bold enough to command attention on a nightstand or side table; compact enough to work anywhere in the home; warm enough to set the evening mood without competing with the room's primary lighting. Plug in, tap the switch, done. Everything else is 1970s Italian optimism."
