TABLE LAMPS · A SQUIGGLE, A SHADE

A wave in black metal.
A pleat in white linen.

The Onda is our first table lamp — a compact bedside piece with an unmistakable visual signature. Its sculptural squiggle-shaped black metal base reads as one continuous drawn line, undulating up from the tabletop to support a soft-glow pleated white linen shade above. The design pairs the playful geometric register of 1980s postmodernism with the material honesty of hand-pleated linen textile, producing a lamp that reads as considered decorative statement rather than as neutral background fixture. Compact at Ø 14.1" × H 18.5" — sized for bedside tables, entryway consoles, small side tables, and dressing vanities. Plug-in convenience with your region's plug (US/UK/AU/EU). Warm-white LED bulb (E14) included in every order.

A table lamp that reads as considered decorative object.

Most table lamps are neutral objects — cylindrical bases, standard drum shades, forms designed to disappear into the tabletop composition around them. The Onda takes the opposite approach. Its squiggle-shaped base is the fixture's primary identity — a piece of black-metal linework that reads as considered graphic gesture on the tabletop, holding attention the way a piece of small sculpture would rather than the way a functional lamp would. The design lineage draws on 1980s postmodernism — the Memphis-Group-era design vernacular that treated household objects as playful expressive form rather than as pure Modernist function. The Onda updates that vernacular for contemporary interiors: the postmodern impulse is preserved (the squiggle base as playful design gesture), but the material palette is restrained (matte black + white linen rather than saturated primary colours), so the fixture reads as considered rather than as costume-y.

Above the squiggle base sits a hand-pleated white linen shade — a vintage-inspired textile fixture that provides soft diffused warm glow through its natural fibre weave. Linen is chosen over synthetic fabric or paper for three reasons: the natural fibre catches warm bulb light in the exact register the design intends (warm, atmospheric, softly ambient), the hand-pleated construction reads as considered craft rather than as machine-perfect uniformity, and the material ages honestly (linen develops character with use rather than degrading uniformly). The pleats catch light at their crests and shadow at their troughs, giving the shade quiet visual rhythm that complements the squiggle base's undulating line below.

Together the two components — sculptural base + soft-glow shade — produce a fixture that operates at two registers simultaneously. From across the room, the Onda reads as considered decorative composition on the tabletop. Up close, when illuminated, it reads as intimate warm glow appropriate for bedside reading, entryway welcome, or evening living-room ambient. This is a lamp for interiors specifying design-forward character rather than for interiors that want their lighting to disappear.

Two components

The base is the statement. The shade is the glow.

Component 01 ★

Squiggle base.

Powder-coated matte black metal, formed as one continuous undulating S-curve rising from a small stabilising footplate up to the shade harp. The undulations are calibrated to produce visible rhythm without reading as random — three defined wave crests along the vertical rise, spaced to catch light and shadow evenly as the room's ambient conditions shift. Reads as considered sculpture on the tabletop when the lamp is off; frames the soft glow above when the lamp is on.

Sculptural · postmodern-inspired · matte black

Component 02

Pleated shade.

Hand-pleated white linen fabric fitted over a fine internal shade frame — the pleats run vertically from the shade's top rim to its bottom hem, producing quiet textural rhythm that mirrors the squiggle base's undulation register below. The linen is a natural woven textile, breathable, and warm in tone; catches E14 warm-white bulb light in soft diffused ambient character. Vintage-inspired: the pleated linen fabric reference draws on 1930s-1970s domestic lamp shades that treated pleats as considered surface detail.

Hand-pleated · vintage-inspired · warm

The visual pairing of the postmodern squiggle base with the vintage pleated shade is deliberate — the fixture reads as two design vocabularies in conversation rather than as either alone. Interiors specifying strict period register (pure Memphis, pure vintage) may find the Onda's dual identity too dialectical; interiors that welcome playful design mixing will find the pairing productive.

Applications

Six tabletops for a compact statement.

Application 01

Bedside tables.

The primary application. Compact Ø 14.1" footprint sits comfortably on standard bedside nightstands without crowding water glasses, phones, or books. Warm pleated-linen glow supports bedside reading and evening ambient. Pair two Ondas symmetrically on either side of the bed for coordinated composition.

Application 02

Entryway consoles.

Positioned on entryway console tables, the Onda reads as considered welcome moment on entry — the squiggle base signals design-forward interior register before the guest reaches the living space. Pair with a small tray or decorative object for a considered console vignette.

Application 03

Living-room side tables.

Beside sofa arms on side tables and end tables — the Onda provides intimate warm ambient light for evening lounging without dominating the room's overall lighting scheme. Works as complementary source alongside a floor lamp or ceiling pendant, rather than as the room's primary fixture.

Application 04

Home offices & studies.

Positioned on home-office desks or study tables as considered ambient companion to task lighting. The design-forward register reads as considered creative-space signal — appropriate for interiors where the workspace is meant to feel personal rather than corporate-utilitarian.

Application 05

Dressing vanities & bookshelves.

On bedroom vanity tables for morning-routine warm ambient light, or on bookshelf horizontal surfaces as considered decorative object with functional lighting register. The pleated shade catches light warmly during mirror use; the squiggle base reads as sculptural accent on shelf compositions.

Application 06 · commercial

Boutique-hotel guest rooms.

Boutique-hotel guest room bedside tables and short-term rental vanities where the design-forward register reads as considered upscale material choice. Plug-in convenience allows repositioning between rooms without electrician cost; the compact footprint fits most standard hospitality nightstand dimensions.

Setup

A two-step decision at checkout.

1

Select your plug type.

Choose your region at checkout. US Plug for North America (Type A/B, 110-120V). UK Plug for United Kingdom, Ireland, and former British territories (Type G, 220-240V). AU Plug for Australia and New Zealand (Type I, 220-240V). EU Plug for European Union countries (Type C/F, 220-240V). The fixture ships wired for your selected region — no adapters or rewiring required. The 59.1" cord with inline push-button switch works with any standard wall outlet in your region.

2

Bulb included — plug in and switch on.

Every Onda ships with a warm-white LED bulb (E14 base, 2700K, non-dimmable) pre-fitted and ready to use — no separate bulb purchase required. The E14 socket is the smaller-diameter base common in European lamps and in candelabra-style fixtures in North America. If you want to upgrade to a dimmable E14 LED or a filament-style Edison E14 bulb for vintage warm character, replacement bulbs are widely available at Home Depot, Amazon, IKEA, and any lighting retailer. Maximum wattage 40W (or LED equivalent). Do not confuse the E14 base with the larger E26 (US) or E27 (EU) standard socket.

Craft

Bent metal. Pleated linen. Considered assembly.

Every Onda is assembled by hand from two primary components. The squiggle base is precision-bent steel wire finished with matte-black powder coating — the metal is formed into its undulating S-curve profile via calibrated jigs, ensuring the three wave crests along the vertical rise remain consistent from unit to unit while allowing subtle handcraft variation in the exact angles. Powder-coat finish is chosen over paint or lacquer for durability against daily contact, moisture-resistance for humid bedroom conditions, and colour-stability without fading over years of use. The pleated linen shade is hand-folded natural linen fabric fitted over a fine internal shade frame — the pleats are set individually by artisans, producing subtle variation in pleat depth and rhythm that reads as considered handmade craft rather than as machine-perfect uniformity.

Power delivery is via a 59.1" (150 cm) cord with in-line push-button switch — press once to turn on, press again to turn off. The switch is positioned on the cord approximately 12" below the fixture base, within easy reach from the tabletop for effortless bedside operation without needing to fumble under the shade. Compatible with AC 110-240V household current via your selected plug type at checkout. Certified for North America, EU, Australia, and Saudi Arabia electrical standards.

Questions

About the included bulb — and can I upgrade?

Bulb included. Every Onda ships with a standard non-dimmable warm-white LED bulb pre-fitted in the E14 socket, calibrated to 2700K for correct warm-glow character through the pleated linen shade. Plug into the wall, press the inline switch, and the lamp works — no separate bulb purchase required. If you want to upgrade: the E14 socket accepts any standard E14 bulb (the smaller-diameter base common in European lamps and North-American candelabra fixtures — not the larger E26/E27). For dimming, swap in a dimmable E14 warm-white LED. For vintage character, an E14 filament Edison bulb (LED or classic tungsten) provides amber warm tones that pair particularly well with the pleated linen. Widely available at Home Depot, Amazon, IKEA, and any lighting retailer. Maximum wattage 40W. Avoid 4000K "cool white" or higher (reads too clinical against the warm linen).

Onda, Bendik, or Arco — which lamp fits my room?

All three are plug-in lamps but at different registers. Onda (this fixture) — table lamp, Ø 14.1" × H 18.5", squiggly black metal base + white pleated linen shade, 1980s postmodern-inspired sculptural. Correct for bedside tables, entryway consoles, small side tables. E14 bulb (not included). Bendik — floor lamp, Ø 28.4" × H 59", beech wood spine + iron base + linen shade in 3 colors, 1970s Danish design tribute compact warm. Correct for reading corners beside armchairs. E26/E27 bulb (not included). Arco — floor lamp, W 47.2" × H 66.9" arching overhead reach, metal + acrylic + integrated LED, 1960s Italian arc-lamp lineage modern statement. Correct for above sofa, above dining table, above bed. Bulb integrated (no bulb change). Choose Onda for compact tabletop + design-forward; Bendik for warm compact + reading corner; Arco for overhead reach + modern minimalist.

Does the squiggle base echo any specific historical designer piece?

The Onda draws on the broader 1980s postmodern design vernacular associated with the Memphis Group (founded by Ettore Sottsass in Milan in 1981) and adjacent postmodern movements of the era — the era's design vocabulary treated squiggles, wavy forms, and playful geometric shapes as expressive statement rather than as pure Modernist function. The Onda is not, however, an interpretation of any single specific Memphis Group piece by Sottsass, Michele De Lucchi, George Sowden, or the other Memphis designers. Nor is it a reissue authorised by the Memphis Milano archive. It is an independent original design drawing on the era's broader postmodern impulse, updated with a restrained material palette (matte black + white linen) that reads as more considered than the primary-colour Memphis originals. For authenticated Memphis Group reissues, we recommend consulting the Memphis Milano archive's authorised retailers directly.

Is the fixture stable? Will the squiggle base tip?

The squiggle base terminates in a small stabilising footplate at the tabletop — the fixture is engineered to stand securely on any flat solid surface. The wavy S-curve above the footplate is decorative in character but structural in engineering, holding the shade harp centred over the footplate for balanced weight distribution. The lamp will not tip when brushed against or when the shade is gently adjusted. That said: place the footplate flush on a flat surface (not on a folded doily or uneven tabletop cloth that could rock under load), position at least 4-6" back from the tabletop edge to prevent accidental knocking, and supervise around small children or large dogs who may pull on the cord or shade.

Can I buy two for a matched bedside pair?

Yes — the Onda is particularly effective as a matched bedside pair. Because each fixture is hand-assembled, individual units will show subtle variation in linen pleat depth and squiggle wave angles — this is characteristic of handmade production and reads as considered craft rather than as manufacturing defect. If you require particularly close matching between two units for a coordinated bedside display, request "matched-batch pair" at checkout in the order notes, or email support@stuberlighting.com before placing the order — we pull both units from the same production batch to minimize between-unit variation. No additional charge for matched-batch pairing.

Can I dim it?

Yes with the correct combination. The pre-fitted bulb is non-dimmable, and the inline switch on the cord operates as on/off only. For dimming: (1) swap the included bulb for a dimmable E14 warm-white LED bulb (widely available; check package for "dimmable" label), and (2) plug the lamp into a wall outlet controlled by a triac-compatible wall dimmer (Lutron Diva and Caseta triac dimmers are known LED-compatible). At 40-60% brightness the pleated linen glow reads as intimate warm atmospheric anchor — particularly correct for bedside evening use.

How do I clean and maintain the fixture?

Powder-coated squiggle base: wipe with soft dry microfibre cloth for regular dust; for stubborn marks, slightly damp microfibre with mild dish soap solution then dry immediately. Powder-coat finish resists fingerprints and scratches in normal conditions. Avoid abrasive cleaners, ammonia-based products, or acetone solvents. Pleated linen shade: gently vacuum with a fabric-brush attachment on lowest suction setting to remove dust from between pleats; every 3-6 months. For spot marks or stains: gentle spot-clean with dry-cleaning solvent applied via clean white cloth, blotted gently — do not rub. Never machine-wash the shade or soak in water (will damage the internal shade frame and pleat set). For heavily soiled shades, professional shade cleaning is recommended over home cleaning.

Can I use this in a bathroom, powder room, or covered outdoor space?

No — indoor dry locations only. The Onda is rated IP20, providing no protection against sustained moisture. The linen shade in particular is vulnerable to humidity (moisture will discolor and warp the linen, damage the pleat set, and corrode the internal shade frame). Never install in bathrooms (steam damage), powder rooms with significant shower proximity, covered outdoor patios, or enclosed pool areas. Correct locations: bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, entryway foyers, hallways, home offices, and boutique-hospitality guest rooms with normal residential humidity levels.

Trade programs and hospitality installations?

Yes — the Onda is a specified fixture for boutique-hotel guest rooms, Airbnb-styled short-term rentals, and multi-unit residential design projects where the design-forward register reads as considered material choice. Multi-unit installations of matched-batch pairs across coordinated guest rooms produce considered visual consistency. Trade programs available; matched-batch pair coordination for bedside pair installations at no extra charge; project-management coordination for larger orders; bulk pricing for orders of 20+ units. Production lead times run 4-6 weeks; multi-fixture orders may extend proportionally. Postmodern Tribute Note. The Onda is an independent interpretation drawing on the broader 1980s postmodern design vernacular popularised by the Memphis Group (founded by Ettore Sottsass in Milan in 1981) and adjacent postmodern movements of the era. It is not marketed as, and is not, an officially licensed reissue of any specific piece by Sottsass, Michele De Lucchi, George Sowden, Nathalie Du Pasquier, or any other named Memphis Group designer. For authenticated Memphis Group reissues, we recommend consulting the Memphis Milano archive's authorised retailers directly. The Stuberlighting Onda offers a restrained matte-black-and-linen material palette rather than the saturated primary-colour and laminate materials of Memphis Group originals.
