It's a lamp with a job to do: tilt the shade down over a desk or book for focused, directional light, or angle it up to bounce a softer glow off the wall. Honestly, About the Light

This is a directional lamp, not a soft all-around glow.

The metal shade doesn't let light through the way fabric or glass does — instead it channels the light out through the opening, giving a focused, directional pool rather than a diffused glow in every direction. That's exactly what makes it good for reading and task lighting; just know it's a spotlight-style lamp, not an ambient lantern. Aim it up if you want a softer, bounced effect.
