Iconic era
In 1947, an American designer took a piece of military netting, sprayed it with self-skinning translucent polymer, and accidentally invented one of the most iconic lighting silhouettes of the Mid-Century era. The shapes — saucers, balls, pears, crisscrossed bubbles, cigar-shaped drums, apples, and tall lanterns — became immediately, permanently recognizable. Seventy-five years later, they still belong to every Mid-Century-inspired interior in the country.
The Stuberlighting Bubble Family is a Nelson-style collection that honors the original design vocabulary. The shapes are the canonical nine — A and B Saucers in five sizes each, the iconic Ball and Pear, the cross-hatched E and F variations, the long Cigar Drum, the Apple, and the Cylinder Lantern. Each is made in spun polymer over a steel armature, finished in the canonical translucent white that diffuses warm light through the shade like a glowing paper lantern.
Bulbs included. Built to UL safety standards. Choose your Model and size at checkout — from a compact 7.9" Pear suitable for hallways to a 31.4" Saucer that anchors a large dining room.

— The nine shapes —
A guide to choosing
A · B
Saucer — the most iconic
Wide and flat with a gentle curve, the Saucer is the most instantly recognizable shape in the family. Five sizes (15.8" to 31.4"). Use over dining tables, kitchen islands, or as the centerpiece of low-ceiling living rooms — the flat profile fits 8-foot American ceilings without crowding.
Model A: gentler curve · Model B: slightly deeper bowl
C
Ball — perfect sphere
A clean 11.8" sphere. Works in pairs over kitchen islands, single in hallways, or beside beds replacing bedside lamps. The Ball's geometric purity makes it the most architectural Model — it reads as a deliberate object rather than just a fixture.
D
Pear — vertical compact
A narrow vertical drop, only 7.9" wide but nearly 16" tall. The slim profile makes the Pear ideal for hallways, narrow entries, and tight spaces where wider pendants don't fit. The vertical orientation reads architectural in places horizontal fixtures look awkward.
E · F
Crisscross — structured grace
The Crisscross variations have visible cross-hatched lines across the shade — what was originally military netting structure rendered as design. Model E is a Saucer with crisscrossed lines (two sizes); Model F is a Ball variant in four sizes. The lines add visual texture and make the Crisscross models the more "designed" of the family.
G
Cigar — horizontal drum
An elongated horizontal cylinder, the Cigar's long axis works above kitchen islands, breakfast bars, and rectangular dining tables in ways round shapes cannot match. Two sizes (13.7" and 17.7"). One Cigar Drum centered above a long island reads better than two Balls trying to fill the same space.
H
Apple — soft curve
A rounded, slightly squat shape that's wider than tall (19.7" × 14.9"). The Apple has the softest silhouette in the family — neither perfectly spherical nor flat — making it the most organic-feeling. Ideal where the Ball would feel too geometric and the Saucer too horizontal.
I
Cylinder Lantern — vertical column
A taller vertical cylinder, 15.8" wide × 16.5" tall. The straight sides make the Cylinder Lantern feel more architectural and less sculptural than the curved Models — particularly well-suited to modern minimalist interiors where the Bubble's softness should be tempered with straight lines.
— The material —
"The original was self-skinning polymer over a wire armature. Ours is the same."
The Bubble Family's signature glow comes from spun polymer — a translucent plastic film sprayed over a steel wire armature, then heat-cured into a self-skinning shade. The polymer diffuses bulb light through the shade itself, making the entire fixture glow rather than just projecting light downward. That's why an unlit Bubble pendant looks white, but a lit one glows warm — the material is translucent rather than opaque.
Our Bubble Family is built with the same material composition as the 1947 originals: spun polymer over steel armature, finished in the canonical translucent white. The light through the shade reads as warm and atmospheric — the original design instinct that made the Bubble family iconic in the first place.

Size, scale, and application
SMALL · 7.9–13.8"
For tight spaces and pairs
Pear (D), Ball (C), Crisscross small (E·F), small Cigar (G). Use single in hallways and bedside, or in pairs over kitchen islands.
MEDIUM · 15.7–19.7"
For most dining tables and living rooms
Medium Saucers (A·B), Crisscross Ball (F), Apple (H), Lantern (I). The most versatile size range — works above standard dining tables, kitchen islands, and as a single centerpiece in most rooms.
LARGE · 23.6–27.6"
For large dining tables and open-plan rooms
Large Saucers (A·B), Large Crisscross Ball (F). For dining tables 60"+ and open-plan living/dining areas where the fixture needs to anchor the space.
STATEMENT · 31.4"
For grand spaces and architectural focal points
The largest Saucers (A·B at 31.4") read as architectural — grand dining rooms, two-story foyers, double-height living rooms. Single placement; the fixture is the room's focal point.
— Where they live —
Recommended spaces
Dining table — Saucer (Model A or B, 19-27")
The Saucer's wide flat profile fits standard 8-foot ceilings without crowding, and the translucent glow over a dining table reads exactly like every Mid-Century interior magazine spread you've ever seen.
Kitchen island — Cigar Drum (Model G) or Crisscross pair (Model F)
A single 17.7" Cigar above a long island, or two Crisscross Balls spaced along the island length. The kitchen island is the most popular application for the entire Bubble family.
Living room — Apple (Model H) or 23-27" Saucer
Center a large Saucer over the conversation area, or use the Apple for a softer geometric reading. The translucent glow contributes warm ambient light without ever feeling harsh.
Bedroom — Ball (Model C) or Lantern (Model I)
A single Ball at the center of a primary bedroom, or two flanking the bed in place of bedside lamps. The Lantern (Model I) works for rooms where the Ball would feel too small but a Saucer would feel too wide.
Hallway or narrow entry — Pear (Model D)
The 7.9" Pear is the only Model narrow enough to work in tight hallways and small entryway nooks. Hang singly, or in a series of 2-3 down a long hallway for the Mid-Century interior signature look.

Questions
Which Model should I order? +
Match the Model to the room geometry:
Wide flat ceiling, large room → Saucer (A or B), 19-27".
Square or round room → Ball (C) or Apple (H).
Long rectangular table or island → Cigar Drum (G).
Tight space or hallway → Pear (D).
Modern minimalist room → Crisscross (E or F).
Architectural Mid-Century → Cylinder Lantern (I).
For specific room photos and personalized recommendations, email service@stuberlighting.com — we'll help you choose the right Model and size.
Are bulbs included? Can I dim it? +
Yes — E26 LED warm-white bulbs are included (standard 2700K, non-dimmable). Larger Models (above 20") may include 2-3 bulbs depending on socket configuration.
For dimming, replace the included bulbs with dimmable E26 LEDs (widely available at Home Depot, Lowe's, Amazon) and pair with a dimmable wall switch compatible with LED loads. The fixture itself works with both dimmable and non-dimmable bulb setups.
How is the spun polymer material? Does it yellow over time? +
Spun polymer is the canonical Bubble material — translucent plastic film sprayed over a steel wire armature, then heat-cured into a self-skinning shade. It's lightweight, surprisingly durable, and produces the warm diffused glow that makes Bubble pendants iconic.
Modern spun polymer is significantly more UV-stable than the 1950s originals — minimal yellowing over years of normal indoor use. Avoid placing in direct sunlight all day (which can fade the white over time) and avoid touching the shade with greasy hands (the polymer surface is matte and can show oils). Dust with a soft dry cloth or compressed air; never wet-clean.
Is this an authentic Nelson Bubble? +
No — our Bubble Family is a Nelson-style collection, not an authentic licensed reissue. The authentic Nelson Bubble Lamp series is made under license from the original designer's estate by a US-based manufacturer, priced significantly higher ($300-$800 per fixture). Our spun polymer Bubble Family honors the design vocabulary and uses the same material composition, at a price point accessible to the everyday Mid-Century interior. We do not claim affiliation with, license from, or endorsement by the original designer's estate or any successor company.
Can I order multiple Models in one order? +
Yes — mixing Models within an order is one of the most common Bubble Family applications. A pair of Crisscross Balls over the kitchen island plus a single Saucer over the adjacent dining table; a Cigar over the breakfast bar plus a Pear in the entry hallway; a series of three Pears down a long corridor. For multi-Model orders, email service@stuberlighting.com — we'll match the polymer batches so all fixtures share the same translucent white tone.
