PENDANT LIGHTS · A SOFT COCOON

An oval cocoon.
Folded flat, then unfolded overhead.

The Mayu is a soft oval rice-paper pendant designed as a modern reinterpretation of the traditional Japanese folding lantern. The elongated cocoon silhouette — Ø 22.4" wide, H 25.1" tall — reads as sculptural presence with warm intimate register. The paper shade ships collapsed flat and unfolds at installation, producing an unusually easy setup and unusually easy handling if you ever need to move or store the fixture. The name Mayu is Japanese for silkworm cocoon — the shape the shade echoes, and the quiet register it brings to the room.

Foldable design

Ships flat · easy install & move

A folding lantern, reinterpreted.

The Mayu draws directly on the traditional Japanese folding-lantern lineage — chōchin, the collapsible paper lanterns Japanese households have used for centuries. That tradition solved a practical problem elegantly: how to make a substantial light fixture that could fold flat when not needed. The Mayu carries that engineering forward. The paper shade ships collapsed flat in the shipping box, unfolds at installation via its internal ring structure, and can be re-folded and stored if you ever move house or want to change fixtures seasonally. Most pendant lights ship rigid and require careful handling forever after; the Mayu ships flat and stays flexible.

The elongated cocoon silhouette is the fixture's design signature. Where round-globe pendants (like our Tsuki) hold spherical calm register and chestnut-shell pendants (like our Kuri) hold flat cozy register, the Mayu's oval cocoon proportion reads as gently elongated sculptural presence — vertical enough to be considered graphic form, soft enough to remain quietly organic. The shape carries warmth naturally; cocoon silhouettes read as protective and enveloping rather than as sharp geometric abstraction.

The material is layered handmade rice paper — a slightly heavier-weight paper than traditional washi that gives the shade its ability to hold cocoon shape reliably once unfolded, while retaining the natural translucency that produces the warm diffused glow. Held to bulb light by evening, the paper reads as gently glowing lantern; by day, the paper's natural fibre character reads as considered handmade craft. Every fixture is honestly what it appears to be.

Foldable design

Flat in the box. Cocoon in the ceiling.

Advantage 01

Ships flat.

The shade arrives collapsed in the shipping box — significantly smaller footprint than rigid pendant shades of the same installed size. Reduced shipping cost, reduced handling damage risk during transit, and a shipping box small enough to fit through standard residential doorways without maneuvering.

Advantage 02

Easy install.

Unfold the shade at installation via the internal ring structure — the paper opens into its oval cocoon shape automatically as you extend the frame. Total install time is meaningfully shorter than for rigid pendants of similar size. Customer reviews consistently note this as an unexpected benefit — the fixture is installed in less time than they anticipated.

Advantage 03

Store or move.

Unlike rigid pendant shades that must remain assembled forever after installation, the Mayu can be re-folded and stored if you ever change fixtures seasonally, move house, or want to swap between multiple fixtures. Reduces the practical friction of pendant ownership — the fixture is as flexible as an object of its size can reasonably be.

The foldable design is not a compromise on aesthetic — once unfolded and installed, the Mayu reads as substantial considered pendant. The foldability is a hidden practical benefit rather than a visible design feature.

Applications

Six quiet rooms for a cocoon.

Application 01

Dining rooms.

Centred above 4-6-seat rectangular or round dining tables. Hang the fixture 30-36" above the tabletop for correct evening-service light quality. The elongated cocoon reads as considered vertical presence above the table — different from round-globe pendants which read as horizontal composition.

Application 02

Bedrooms.

Centred above the bed, over a dressing area, or beside a reading position. The 25.1" fixture height reads as substantial visual anchor at bedroom register; the warm cocoon glow supports bedtime routine and reading without over-illuminating the room.

Application 03

Reading nooks & corners.

Suspended in reading nooks, beside favourite armchairs, or centred above chaise-lounge zones. The cocoon glow reads as intimate ambient anchor for reading and evening relaxation. The soft warm hue is particularly correct for restful register in these spaces.

Application 04

Kitchen islands & breakfast nooks.

Above standard kitchen islands or breakfast nooks where the cocoon form reads as considered ambient presence. Pair with under-cabinet task lighting; use the Mayu as warm sculptural centrepiece rather than as functional task fixture. Works well in Japandi-styled kitchens.

Application 05

Entryway foyers & hallways.

Standard-height entryway foyers with 8-10-ft ceilings and modern hallway junctions where the cocoon reads as considered welcome presence. The vertical elongation works particularly well in narrower foyer volumes where round pendants would read as visually crowding.

Application 06 · commercial

Boutique hospitality & rentals.

Boutique-hotel guest rooms, hospitality restrooms, short-term rental units, and Japandi-styled boutique cafés. The foldable design is particularly valuable in commercial contexts where fixtures may need to be swapped, moved, or stored between seasons or renovations without full deinstallation.

Choosing

A two-step decision.

1

Mayu, Tsuki, or Kuri — which cousin?

All three are Japanese-inspired paper pendants at different design registers. Mayu (this fixture) — oval cocoon in rice paper, foldable design, warm intimate register with vertical elongation. Correct for dining, bedrooms, reading nooks. Tsuki — round nearly-spherical lantern in pure washi, statement centrepiece register. Correct for statement dining, foyers, kitchen islands. Kuri — chestnut-shell in washi + bamboo silk, cozy intimate register with horizontal breadth. Correct for breakfast nooks, small dining, bedrooms.

2

Match hang height to your surface.

Above dining tables: fixture's lowest point 30-36" above tabletop. Above kitchen islands: 32-38" above counter surface. Above bedside or reading: 40-50" above sitting-eye-level so the shade doesn't obstruct sightline. In foyers & open rooms: lowest point 6-7 ft above floor. Cord adjustable at installation via ceiling canopy; extended lengths available on request at no extra charge.

Craft

Layered rice paper. Simple hardware.

Every Mayu is assembled by hand. Layered handmade rice paper is stretched over an internal foldable metal ring frame that defines the cocoon's oval proportions when unfolded. The rice paper is slightly heavier weight than traditional washi to hold the cocoon shape reliably; layered construction adds durability without adding significant weight. The internal frame is engineered to fold flat for shipping and storage, then extend into its cocoon geometry via the internal ring structure when the fixture is unfolded at installation. Simple mechanical design, made to last.

A standard E26 (US) or E27 (EU/UK/AU) warm-white LED bulb is included, calibrated to warm-yellow tones for correct rice-paper diffusion character. Maximum 40W (or LED equivalent). Cord length is 59" standard, adjustable during installation, with extended lengths available on request at no extra charge. Canopy is 4.7" standard; alternative canopy sizes available on request — leave a note at checkout or contact us within 24 hours of order placement.

Questions

How does the foldable design actually work?

The rice paper is stretched over an internal foldable metal ring frame, similar to the traditional Japanese chōchin lantern engineering. In its collapsed state, the paper folds against itself in an accordion-style compression along the vertical axis — the entire shade compresses to a fraction of its unfolded height for shipping and storage. At installation, extending the fixture pulls the internal rings apart along the vertical axis, and the paper unfolds naturally into its oval cocoon shape. No tools required for the unfolding step; the fixture handles it via its internal mechanism. Once unfolded, the shade holds cocoon shape reliably indefinitely — you do not need to re-fold it unless you want to store or move the fixture.

Mayu, Tsuki, or Kuri — which pendant is right for me?

All three are Japanese-inspired paper pendants at different design registers. Mayu (this fixture) — soft oval cocoon in rice paper, foldable design, single size (Ø 22.4" × H 25.1"), warm intimate register with vertical elongation. Correct for dining tables, bedrooms, reading nooks, and rooms where the fixture should read as considered but not statement centrepiece. Tsuki — round nearly-spherical lantern in pure washi paper, 2 sizes (Ø 21.7-34.6"), calm formal centrepiece register. Correct for statement dining, foyers, kitchen islands. Kuri — chestnut-shell shape in washi + bamboo silk, 2 sizes (Ø 17.7-23.6"), cozy intimate register with horizontal breadth. Correct for breakfast nooks, small dining, bedrooms.

Is this an Akari fixture?

No. Akari is a specific brand of paper lanterns designed by the sculptor Isamu Noguchi beginning in 1951 — those pieces are officially licensed reissues manufactured under the Noguchi estate's authorization. The Mayu is a Japanese-inspired rice-paper pendant of our own design; it draws on the same traditional folding-lantern lineage that inspired Noguchi, but it is not marketed as an Akari piece and is not authorized under the Noguchi estate. If you are seeking an authenticated Akari fixture specifically, we recommend consulting the estate's authorized retailers. If you are seeking a considered rice-paper cocoon with foldable practicality, the Mayu serves that specification.

Can I dim it?

Yes — strongly recommended, particularly in dining rooms and bedrooms where evening-mode ambient light is the specification. The included E26/E27 LED bulb is non-dimmable warm-white 2700K. Replace with a dimmable E26/E27 LED (widely available at any lighting retailer) and install a triac-compatible wall dimmer. At 40-60% brightness, the rice paper cocoon glows as intimate warm anchor — the fixture reads as its most atmospheric register. The Mayu is particularly beautiful at lower brightness settings; at full brightness it reads more like functional task fixture.

What if I want a different canopy size?

The standard canopy is 4.7" — appropriate for most standard-diameter residential electrical junction boxes. Alternative canopy sizes (smaller for narrow junction boxes, larger for wider junction boxes) are available at no extra charge. To request a different canopy size: leave a note at checkout specifying the desired diameter, or contact us at support@stuberlighting.com within 24 hours of order placement. We match the canopy to your specification before shipping. If you are uncertain about the correct canopy size for your ceiling installation, we recommend consulting your licensed electrician before placing the order.

How do I clean and maintain rice paper?

Rice paper is more durable than it looks (layered construction adds resilience) but should never be wet-cleaned. For dust: gently vacuum with a fabric-brush attachment on the lowest suction setting, or use a soft dry microfibre duster; every 3-6 months. For fingerprints or spot marks: gently blot with a dry soft brush; never use water, cleaners, or damp cloths — moisture will discolor the paper permanently. If the shade collects too much dust: the fixture can be temporarily collapsed and the folded shade dusted externally, then unfolded again; this is a practical benefit of the foldable design. Long-term care: avoid installing directly beneath forced-air heating or cooling ducts, and keep the fixture out of direct sunlight to prevent gradual color fading.

Can I use this in a bathroom or covered outdoor space?

No — indoor dry locations only. The Mayu is rated IP20, which provides no protection against moisture. Rice paper is particularly vulnerable to humidity — moisture will cause the paper to warp, discolor, and eventually fail. Never install in bathrooms, above hot tubs, in covered outdoor patios, in enclosed pool areas, or in any location where humidity regularly exceeds normal residential interior levels. Correct locations: dining rooms, kitchens (away from stovetop steam), living rooms, bedrooms, foyers, hallways, and indoor reading nooks with normal residential humidity levels.

How difficult is installation?

Meaningfully easier than typical rigid pendant installation. The Mayu ships with the shade collapsed flat in the box, so the initial handling and ceiling-mounting is done with the paper folded and out of the way. Once the electrical mounting is complete, unfold the shade via the internal frame — the paper opens into its cocoon shape as you extend the mechanism. Total professional installation time: 30-45 minutes typical, single electrician sufficient. Customer reviews consistently note the installation as unexpectedly easy — the fixture is installed in less time than they expected. Professional installation by a licensed electrician is recommended for the electrical mounting step; the shade-unfolding step is straightforward once mounting is complete.

Trade programs and rental / hospitality applications?

Yes — the Mayu is particularly specified for hospitality contexts, short-term rental properties, and multi-unit residential installations where the foldable design solves practical logistics. The fixture ships in unusually compact packaging, installs unusually quickly, and can be re-collapsed and stored between seasons or renovations without full deinstallation. Multi-fixture installations at repeating intervals along corridors or in coordinated guest rooms produce considered rhythm. Trade programs available; extended cord lengths and alternative canopy sizes at no extra charge; project-management coordination for larger orders. Production lead times run 4-6 weeks.
