GINKGO SERIES · N°03 · WALL

Sculpture, mounted
to the wall.

A ceramic-and-gold wall sconce that reads as art first, lighting second. Handcrafted porcelain ginkgo leaves arranged along polished-gold branches, mounted flush against the wall — a sculptural focal point in daylight, an ambient warmth source when lit. Two sizes for bedroom pairs, hallway installations, foyers, and any wall that wants to hold a considered decorative object.

Made to hang
as a pair.

The Sonia's most-photographed installation is a matched pair — mirror-mounted on either side of a bed, above a sofa, or framing a hallway threshold. The bilateral symmetry is what elevates it from decor to composition.

Most wall sconces read as functional. The Sonia reads as intentional wall art that happens to also emit warm light.

The Sonia continues the botanical vocabulary established in the Gingko Ceiling Lamp and the Vico Gingko Chandelier — ceramic ginkgo leaves on polished-gold branches — translated to wall-mount scale. The construction reads as a bas-relief sculpture pressed against the wall: the ceramic petals fan outward from a central golden branch structure, the whole composition projects 8-10 inches from the wall surface, and the exposed G9 bulbs at the tips of the branches produce the sparkling constellation-like light that mid-century Art Deco sconces are known for.

This is the fixture for the specific moment when a wall wants a considered decorative object — beside a bed, above a sofa, along a hallway, in a powder room — rather than a floor lamp taking floor space or a pendant descending from the ceiling.

Two sizes

Chosen by wall proportion.

Size 01

Dia 13.8" × H 19.7"

3 × G9 bulbs · brighter

The residential proportional default — bedside pairs, hallway pairs, powder rooms above vanity mirrors, foyer console walls. Three bulbs mean more light output despite the smaller footprint; this is the specification for rooms where the sconce is expected to provide meaningful ambient lighting alongside its sculptural role.

Size 02 · statement

Dia 15.7" × H 23.6"

2 × G9 bulbs · sculptural

The statement scale — accent walls, primary bedroom bedsides, above generous sofas, hallways with wall space to fill. Two bulbs (rather than three) because at this size the fixture is meant to read as sculpture with warmth rather than as a bright light source. Choose where wall presence matters more than illumination output.

Note the bulb count is inversed by size — the smaller 13.8" carries 3 bulbs, the larger 15.7" carries 2. This is deliberate: the smaller fixture is designed to work harder as a light source, the larger to work harder as a sculptural object.

Material 01

Hand-glazed ceramic leaves.

Each ginkgo leaf is individually shaped from porcelain clay and hand-glazed to a glossy white finish. No mould-pressed uniformity — subtle variations in leaf silhouette, glaze thickness, and surface character are the tradition's handcraft signature and appear on every fixture the atelier produces. Ivory-white when unlit; catches warm light softly when lit.

Material 02

Polished-gold branches.

The metal branch structure is polished-gold finished — the classical mid-century Art Deco pairing with white ceramic. Branches are forged and sealed for long-term colour stability across years of installation. Each branch holds one G9 socket at its tip; the exposed bulbs produce the sparkling constellation character the tradition is known for.

Walls

Where the Sonia belongs.

Bedside · primary bedrooms.

The Sonia's most-specified installation. Mount a matched pair on either side of the bed at approximately 60 inches from floor to fixture centre — the shade sits at seated-in-bed eye-level; the warm G9 output diffuses across the wall behind rather than glaring at the reader. Frees both nightstands for books and objects instead of table lamps. Small (13.8") is the correct size for standard bedrooms; Large (15.7") for primary bedrooms with king beds and generous headboards.

Living room · accent walls, above sofas.

Single Large or a matched pair mounted above a sofa arm or on an accent wall. The sculptural read means the fixture is meant to hold visual space against a plain wall or a wallpapered feature wall; the warm G9 output supplements the room's ambient lighting rather than serving as its primary source.

Hallways · corridors, entry runs.

Small mounted in rhythm along a corridor — 4-6 fixtures at 6-8 ft spacing produces a considered hospitality-scale entry sequence. The three-bulb Small provides sufficient light for corridor circulation without requiring a ceiling fixture; also correct for staircase landings.

Powder room · above vanity mirrors.

One of the less-obvious deployments. A matched pair of Small sconces flanking a vanity mirror produces even-illuminated face lighting for grooming while adding significant visual character to what's often a small, over-decorated room. Mid-century Art Deco silhouette pairs well with marble, brass hardware, and considered wallpaper.

Foyer · console walls, staircase feature walls.

Single Large mounted above an entry console or on a staircase feature wall. The fixture reads as the room's welcoming statement — botanical, considered, warm without being commanding.

Questions

Why does the smaller fixture have MORE bulbs?

Deliberately. The Small (13.8") carries 3 bulbs because it's designed as a functional light source that also happens to be beautiful — three G9 sockets produce enough ambient output to genuinely light a corridor, bedside, or vanity area. The Large (15.7") carries 2 bulbs because at this size the fixture is designed to read primarily as sculpture on the wall — the two-bulb configuration keeps the composition visually balanced without producing too-bright light output that would compete with the sculptural read. Choose Small if you want the sconce to work as a light; choose Large if you want it to work as an art object.

What height should I mount it?

Bedside: 60 inches from floor to fixture centre — puts the light source at seated-in-bed eye level. Hallway or corridor: 66-72 inches to centre — above head height, spaced 6-8 feet apart in rhythm. Powder room vanity: 66 inches to centre, flanking the mirror on both sides at 30-36 inches apart. Above sofa: 6-10 inches above the sofa back — the bottom of the fixture should sit just above head-height when seated. Foyer or entry: 66-72 inches to centre, above console table height. When in doubt, 60-66 inches is correct for most residential applications.

Small pair or single Large?

Both work — for different roles. A matched pair of Smalls reads as considered composition: framing a bed, flanking a vanity, holding either side of a fireplace mantel or above a sofa. Bilateral symmetry adds visual weight without requiring a large single fixture. A single Large reads as sculptural statement: above an entry console, on a staircase feature wall, centred above a small accent piece. Rule of thumb: symmetrical rooms (bedrooms, dining walls) benefit from pairs; single feature walls benefit from single Larges.

Can I use it in a bathroom?

Yes and no. Powder rooms (half-baths without a shower or tub): yes — the Sonia works well flanking a vanity mirror and adds the kind of considered decorative statement powder rooms benefit from. Full bathrooms with a shower or tub: no — the fixture is IP20-rated for dry indoor locations, which excludes rooms with active humidity from bathing. The gold finish and ceramic glaze will degrade in high-humidity environments over years. If you need a similar aesthetic for a full bathroom, we can point you toward more IP-rated alternatives.

Sonia vs Gingko Ceiling Lamp vs Vico Chandelier — which Gingko fixture?

All three share the botanical ginkgo vocabulary; the fixture types serve different rooms. Sonia (this fixture): wall-mounted sconce — bedsides, hallways, powder rooms, accent walls. Sculptural presence at wall height. Gingko Ceiling Lamp: semi-flush ceiling fixture — bedrooms, dining rooms, small foyers with 8-ft ceilings. Overhead ambient warmth without pendant drop. Vico Gingko Chandelier: hanging chandelier with 19-inch drop — dining rooms, statement foyers, primary bedrooms with 9-ft-plus ceilings. Architectural composition suspended from the ceiling. Buy whichever fits the ceiling and wall configuration of your room; all three coordinate visually if used across multiple rooms of the same home.

Can I dim it?

Yes — recommended for bedside and evening use. The included G9 LED bulbs are non-dimmable warm-white. To enable dimming: replace with dimmable G9 LEDs (widely available, $10-18 each) and install a compatible triac wall dimmer. At 40-60% brightness, the exposed bulbs produce their most atmospheric register — the sparkling constellation character softens into ambient warmth, and the fixture becomes evening lighting rather than daytime task lighting. Particularly important for bedside pair installations where the sconce serves as reading light.

How do I clean it?

Gently. The ceramic leaves dust with a soft dry microfibre cloth every 2-3 months; for accumulated residue, a lightly-damp cloth (water only, no cleaning products) restores the glossy finish. The polished-gold branches wipe with a dry microfibre cloth — avoid brass polish or metal cleaner, which strip the protective sealing. Never use abrasive sponges, ammonia, or glass cleaner on any of the fixture's surfaces. Individual leaves can be gently unclipped for deep cleaning if needed, though this is rarely required in normal residential installations.

Hospitality-scale orders?

Yes — the Sonia is well-suited for boutique hospitality applications. Boutique hotels (corridor rhythms, guest-room bedside pairs, powder-room installations), restaurant private-dining walls, coworking flagship spaces, and hospitality projects specifying botanical mid-century as design vocabulary. Multi-fixture matched-batch coordination, custom finish variations, and interior-designer trade pricing available. Write to support@stuberlighting.com with your project brief — installation count, corridor lengths, guest-room count, timeline.

"The Sonia is the wall variant of a series that started at the ceiling. Same botanical vocabulary, translated to a wall-mount register. Two sizes because bedsides and accent walls have their own scale, and the fixture is designed to work both as considered decoration and as ambient light source. The third in an ongoing Ginkgo Series."
