Italian Mid-Century Modern · 1965 lineage · No. 08
Fungo.
A mushroom silhouette. A bat's opened wings. A designer icon.
Our tribute to the celebrated Mid-Century Modern mushroom lamp — the curved-dome shade that flows outward at the base like a bat's opened wings (in the Italian design vocabulary the shape is called a pipistrello, bat), supported on a slender powder-coated metal column.
Two sizes. Two finishes. One integrated LED module with touch-cycled color temperature — Warm 3000K, Neutral 4000K, Cool 6000K. Museum-inspired silhouette; contemporary manufacturing at accessible price.
The Italian phrase for it
"Un fungo.
Un'ala aperta.
La luce sotto."
A mushroom. An opened wing. The light beneath.
The silhouette is descended from the 1965 Italian design tradition — the mushroom-dome sculpture that became one of the most-imitated Mid-Century Modern shapes of the 20th century. Featured in museum retrospectives, referenced in interior design catalogues from Milan to Los Angeles, permanently associated with the register of considered Italian modernist domestic accent. Our Fungo is a modern independent interpretation — updated with an integrated LED module, touch-cycled 3-Kelvin color temperature, and manufacturing techniques that make the shape accessible outside collector-price territory.
The three moves
Three signatures define the Fungo.
i.
The dome shade
The bat-wing silhouette.
The Fungo's defining curve — a dome shade that expands outward at the base into two symmetrical "wings", producing the mushroom-with-flaring-brim silhouette that became one of the most-imitated Mid-Century Modern shapes. Molded from optical-grade PMMA acrylic — glossier and more chip-resistant than glass at this scale, safer for shipping and handling, produces the same warm diffused glow. Available in glossy Black or glossy White.
ii.
The base column
Slender powder-coated metal.
A slender vertical metal column powder-coated to match the shade colour (glossy black or glossy white). Terminates in a wide low-profile ring base that provides stability without occupying tabletop footprint. The column reads as a minimalist Italian modernist stem — deliberate visual counterpoint to the flowing dome above.
iii.
The light source
Integrated LED, touch-cycled.
Integrated LED module rated for 50,000 hours (approximately 15-20 years at typical daily use — bulb replacement should never be needed within normal ownership). Touch sensor at the shade tap-cycles through Warm 3000K → Neutral 4000K → Cool 6000K. Same fixture serves evening ambient, day-time work reading, and morning-routine bright without a bulb swap.
Choose your scale
Small for bedside. Large for statement.
Size 01
Small.
⌀ 11.2" × H 14.6"
Compact bedside lamp scale. Sits comfortably on standard nightstands leaving room for phone, water glass, and book. Matched pairs on symmetrical bedside nightstands is one of the most-loved applications. Also correct for entryway consoles, sofa side tables, and dressing vanities.
Size 02 ★
Large.
⌀ 19.7" × H 33.9"
Statement console-lamp scale — reads as considered floor-adjacent sculptural accent. Correct for entryway consoles, living-room corner side tables, dining sideboards, boutique-hotel reception, and hospitality lobbies. Also works as tall bedside for elevated bed heights.

Proportions shown at scale — Large is more than double the height of Small.
Finish 01
Black.
Glossy jet-black powder-coated column and shade — the graphic dramatic choice. Reads as considered contemporary against pale walls and light-toned furnishings; anchors an interior scheme with strong Mid-Century Modern black accent. Correct for interiors where the fixture should read as bold sculptural silhouette from every angle. The most striking of the two.
Finish 02
White.
Glossy pearl-white powder-coated column and shade — the softer atmospheric choice. Reads as considered minimalist against darker walls and richer-toned furnishings; catches the integrated LED warm 3000K glow through the white PMMA shade in the softest evening register. Correct for interiors where the fixture should quietly integrate rather than dominate.
Where the Fungo lives
Six places it belongs.
i.
Bedside nightstands. — Small
The Small (11.2") sits comfortably on standard bedside nightstands with room for phone, water glass, book. Touch sensor allows lights-out without fumbling for a switch in the dark; 3000K warm setting is calibrated for pre-sleep atmospheric ambient. Matched pair as coordinated bedside set is the most-loved application.
ii.
Entryway consoles. — Small or Large
A Small Fungo on a hallway console signals sophisticated Italian designer interior register from the moment guests enter. A Large Fungo on the same console reads as bold sculptural statement — appropriate for foyers with double-height ceilings or grand estate entryways where the mushroom silhouette becomes primary graphic mark of the room.
iii.
Living-room side tables and corners. — Small or Large
A Small on a sofa-side table provides warm reading ambient; the Large in a floor-corner setting (on a low console or directly on the floor as sculptural accent) reads as considered floor-lamp-scale statement. The touch dimmer 3-Kelvin range means the fixture works for both evening atmospheric (3000K) and afternoon reading light (4000K).
iv.
Dining-room sideboards. — Large
A Large Fungo on a dining-room sideboard or buffet reads as considered entertaining-register statement. Correct for evening dinners where the touch sensor allows quick brightness adjustment without leaving the table. The mushroom silhouette holds its own against most other dining-room accent pieces without fighting for attention.
v.
Home offices and studios. — Small
The Small on a home-office desk or writer's studio corner — the touch-cycled 3-Kelvin range allows quick switching between warm evening register (3000K, atmospheric) and cool daytime task register (6000K, sharper contrast for detailed work). The mushroom silhouette adds designer-register warmth to workspaces typically dominated by monitor blue-light.
vi.
Boutique hospitality. — Small or Large
Small pairs on boutique-hotel guest room bedsides; Large on boutique-hotel lobby reception consoles and hospitality-forward restaurant entryways. Multi-unit installations produce visual signature consistency across coordinated rooms. Trade programs and matched-batch pair coordination available at no additional charge.

Questions.
Is this an authenticated Gae Aulenti Martinelli Luce Pipistrello? ⋄
No. The Fungo Table Lamp is an independent Mid-Century Modern mushroom-lamp design that draws on the broader 1960s Italian design vocabulary — the mushroom-with-flaring-brim silhouette that became one of the most-imitated Mid-Century Modern shapes of the 20th century. It is not the Martinelli Luce Pipistrello designed by Gae Aulenti in 1965, is not manufactured by or licensed from Martinelli Luce, and is not marketed as, or authorized under, any specific historical designer's estate. For authenticated Martinelli Luce Pipistrello fixtures, we recommend consulting Martinelli Luce authorized retailers directly (martinelliluce.it). Our Fungo is an accessible interpretation of the mushroom-lamp typology at a modern manufacturing price point.
Which size for which room? ⋄
Small (11.2" × H 14.6") — bedside nightstands, entryway consoles, sofa-side tables, dressing vanities, home office desks. The everyday-use size for compact accent placements. Also correct for matched pairs on symmetrical bedsides. Large (19.7" × H 33.9") — statement console lamps for foyers with double-height ceilings, living-room corner sculptural accents (can sit on low console or directly on floor as tall accent), dining sideboards, boutique-hotel lobbies, and hospitality reception spaces. The Large is bordering floor-lamp scale and should be treated as considered floor-adjacent statement rather than typical bedside application.
How does the touch dimmer work? ⋄
The touch sensor is at the shade. First tap: turns on to Warm 3000K. Second tap: switches to Neutral 4000K. Third tap: switches to Cool 6000K. Fourth tap: turns off. A longer touch-and-hold gesture adjusts brightness up or down within the current color mode. The sensor uses capacitive touch which responds to a light finger tap; no pressure required. If your hands are wet or gloved, gently dry them or remove the glove — the sensor will not respond through thick fabric or gloves.
Is this glass or acrylic? ⋄
Optical-grade PMMA acrylic. The shade is made from high-quality PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate — the material also known as plexiglass or lucite) rather than opal glass. This is intentional for three reasons. First: PMMA is significantly lighter than opal glass, which makes shipping and handling safer without compromising the shape or optical character. Second: PMMA is much more chip-resistant than glass — a Fungo in a busy household with kids or curious pets is much less likely to suffer damage. Third: Modern optical-grade PMMA produces the same warm diffused glow character as opal glass when illuminated with the integrated LED — visually virtually indistinguishable at typical viewing distance.
Is it replaceable-bulb or integrated LED? ⋄
Integrated LED, no bulb replacement. The 3-color-temperature LED module is engineered into the fixture and calibrated for the specific optics of the PMMA dome shade. This is intentional — an integrated LED module allows the touch-controlled color-cycling and dimming to work seamlessly, which a socket-and-bulb design cannot easily do. The LED module is rated for 50,000+ hours of use (approximately 15-20 years at typical 8-hour daily use), so bulb replacement should never be needed within a normal ownership period. If the LED module ever fails within warranty, contact us for service.
Black or White — how do I choose? ⋄
Black — glossy jet-black powder-coated column and shade. Reads as considered contemporary graphic dramatic against pale walls and light-toned furnishings; anchors an interior scheme with strong Mid-Century Modern black accent. Correct for interiors where the fixture should be bold sculptural silhouette. The most striking of the two. White — glossy pearl-white powder-coated column and shade. Reads as softer atmospheric minimalist against darker walls and richer-toned furnishings; catches the integrated LED warm 3000K glow through the white PMMA shade particularly beautifully. Choose White for interiors where the fixture should quietly integrate; choose Black for interiors where the fixture should command attention.
Is 40W bright enough for reading? ⋄
For bedside and console accent use, yes — the Fungo is calibrated as an atmospheric warm accent lamp rather than a task lamp for extended detailed reading. At the brightest Cool 6000K setting the integrated LED provides sharper contrast light suitable for pre-sleep bedtime reading of standard-print books. For extended detailed task reading or paper work sessions, we recommend supplementing with a dedicated task lamp. The Fungo's purpose is warm sculptural designer-register accent — the 3-Kelvin range makes it versatile across evening/day-time contexts, but it is not intended as primary work-desk illumination.
How do I clean it? ⋄
PMMA shade: wipe with soft dry microfibre cloth for regular dust; for stubborn marks, dampen microfibre with mild dish soap solution then wipe and dry immediately. Never use ammonia-based glass cleaners (Windex-type products) on PMMA — ammonia damages acrylic and causes crazing over time. Never use paper towels or abrasive cloths — PMMA scratches easily. Powder-coated metal column and base: wipe with damp microfibre; avoid abrasive scouring pads which will damage the powder coating. For particularly stubborn marks, mild soap solution then dry immediately.
Trade programs and hospitality installations? ⋄
Yes — the Fungo is a specified fixture for boutique-hotel guest room bedsides (Small pairs), boutique-hotel lobby reception (Large), restaurant entryways, Airbnb-styled short-term rentals, MCM-heritage residential projects, and multi-unit residential specifications where the Italian Mid-Century Modern register reads as considered upscale interior specification. Matched-batch coordination available for multi-unit installations at no extra charge. Trade programs, project management for larger orders, and bulk pricing for orders of 20+ units (mix and match across sizes). Production lead times run 4-6 weeks for Small, 6-8 weeks for Large. A note on lineage
Designer Tribute Note. The Fungo Table Lamp is an independent modern interpretation drawing on the traditional Mid-Century Modern mushroom-lamp silhouette vocabulary. It is not the Pipistrello designed by Gae Aulenti in 1965, is not manufactured by or licensed from Martinelli Luce (martinelliluce.it), and is not marketed as, or authorized under, any specific historical designer's estate.
For authenticated Martinelli Luce Pipistrello fixtures, please consult authorized retailers directly. For authenticated purchase channels, museum documentation, and detailed Aulenti-designer archival material, consult specialized Italian modernist auction houses and gallery collections.
"The mushroom silhouette became one of the most-imitated Mid-Century Modern shapes of the 20th century for good reason — it holds its own in almost every interior scheme, catches warm evening bulb light in the softest register, and reads as considered designer accent from any viewing angle. Our Fungo is an accessible interpretation of that typology, updated with an integrated LED touch dimmer that adds three color temperatures to a single fixture. Choose the Small for bedsides and consoles; choose the Large when you want the mushroom silhouette to be the primary graphic mark of the room."
