TABLE LAMPS · MID-CENTURY MUSHROOM DOME
Light travels up.
The room receives it back down.
The Cupola Table Lamp is our interpretation of the 1962 mid-century Italian mushroom-dome vernacular — a fluted aluminum column supports a metal reflector bowl at its top, into which a warm-white bulb points upward; a transparent blown-glass dome then sits over the reflector, catching the upward light and softening it back down through the glass into warm indirect ambient below. No downward-facing glare. No harsh direct light source visible. Just soft indirect glow filtered through sculptural glass. Available in 2 sizes (Small ⌀ 14.7" × H 19.1" · Large ⌀ 19.5" × H 25.4") and 3 finishes (Black, Silver, Coffee). Ships with a warm-white LED bulb (E26/E27) pre-fitted. Plug-in convenience with your region's plug (US/UK/AU/EU).

Two scales
Small H 19.1" · Large H 25.4"
Indirect light, engineered as sculpture.
Most table lamps aim their bulb downward through a shade — the light reaches the room by cutting through fabric, glass, or acrylic on its way from source to surface. The Cupola reverses the entire geometry. Its bulb points upward, aimed into a polished aluminum reflector bowl (white gloss interior) that concentrates and redirects the light back downward. Above the reflector, a transparent blown-glass mushroom dome sits like a bell over the whole assembly, catching the reflected light and diffusing it a second time as it passes back down into the room. The result is soft indirect ambient glow — bright enough for reading or working, atmospheric enough for evening lounging, and completely without the visible bulb glare that direct-facing lamps produce.
The design lineage draws on the 1962 mid-century Italian mushroom-dome vernacular — the era's Italian lighting designers explored indirect-glow reflector geometries as considered engineering exercises with sculptural presence. The Cupola updates that vernacular for contemporary interiors: a fluted aluminum column (vertical grooves catch ambient room light along the base), a heat-tolerant metal reflector bowl (calibrated to distribute the bulb's output evenly across the dome above), and a hand-blown transparent glass mushroom shade (with just enough opacity to soften the reflected light without dimming it excessively).
Available in two sizes — the Small (⌀ 14.7" × H 19.1") is sized for bedside tables, entryway consoles, and standard side tables; the Large (⌀ 19.5" × H 25.4") is sized for larger console tables, generous end tables, dining-room buffet sideboards, and boutique-hospitality reception surfaces where the mushroom-dome silhouette becomes the room's primary sculptural statement. Three finishes (Black, Silver, Coffee) match the fluted aluminum column to any interior palette.
How it works
The light travels a specific path.
Step 01
Bulb points up.
The E26 (or E27 for EU/UK/AU) bulb is fitted in an upward-facing socket at the top of the fluted aluminum column — its light output travels vertically upward toward the reflector bowl positioned directly above.
Step 02 ★
Reflector redirects.
The polished aluminum reflector bowl (glossy white interior) receives the upward light and redirects it back downward — the bowl's concave geometry distributes the redirected light evenly across the glass dome above, eliminating hotspots.
Step 03
Glass dome softens.
The transparent blown-glass mushroom dome sits atop the reflector, catching the redirected light and diffusing it a second time as it exits downward into the room — producing warm indirect glow without visible bulb glare.
The glass dome is loosely fitted rather than fixed — gently rotate it to slightly adjust the direction of the diffused light, giving the fixture practical versatility beyond its considered sculptural presence. Never touch the glass while the bulb is on or recently turned off (the dome catches heat from the reflector below).
Three column finishes
Graphic matte, polished silver, or warm brown.
Finish 01 ★
Black.
The graphic matte choice — matte-black fluted aluminum reads as considered architectural mark against pale walls and light-toned surfaces. Correct for modern-contemporary interiors, industrial-loft register, and rooms with black-steel details elsewhere. The most design-forward of the three.
Finish 02
Silver.
The polished mid-century-authentic choice — brushed silver fluted aluminum echoes the original 1962 Italian mushroom-lamp vocabulary. Correct for mid-century-modern interiors with polished-metal accents (chrome hardware, brushed-steel appliances) or rooms specifying period-authentic register. The most Castiglioni-lineage-accurate of the three finishes.
Finish 03
Coffee.
The warm brown choice — coffee-toned fluted aluminum brings warmth to the mid-century mushroom-dome silhouette. Correct for interiors with dark wood floors, oxblood leather, brass accents, or English-library moody register. The warmest of the three finishes; pairs particularly well with warm textiles and traditional Persian rugs.
Two sizes
Compact bedside, or generous statement.
Size Small
⌀ 14.7" × H 19.1".
The compact scale. Sized for standard bedside nightstands (18"+ wide), entryway consoles, standard side and end tables, home-office desks, and dressing vanities. Reads as considered decorative anchor without dominating smaller surfaces. Ideal as a matched bedside pair or as a single side-table accent.
Bedside · Console · Desk
Size Large ★
⌀ 19.5" × H 25.4".
The statement scale. Sized for larger console tables, generous end tables, dining-room buffet sideboards, boutique-hospitality reception counters, and rooms where the mushroom-dome silhouette becomes the primary sculptural focus. Approximately 30% larger footprint and 33% taller than the Small — commands attention rather than complements.
Console · Buffet · Hospitality
Applications
Six surfaces for indirect glow.
Application 01
Bedside nightstands (Small).
The Small size on standard bedside nightstands — the indirect-glow mechanism eliminates the direct bulb glare that traditional bedside lamps produce, particularly appreciated by light-sensitive sleepers and anyone reading in bed without disturbing a partner. Pair two Small Cupolas symmetrically on either side of the bed.
Application 02
Living-room console tables (Large).
The Large size on generous console tables behind sofas or against feature walls — the mushroom-dome silhouette becomes the room's primary decorative sculpture, while providing warm indirect ambient for evening lounging. The most correct application for the Large scale.
Application 03
Dining-room buffet sideboards.
On dining-room buffet or sideboard surfaces (Large) — provides warm indirect glow during dinner service without the direct-glare problem that bulb-facing lamps would create at eye level for seated guests. The Silver finish particularly effective in this application for mid-century-authentic register.
Application 04
Home offices & reading corners.
On home-office desks or beside reading armchairs — the indirect-glow mechanism reduces eye strain compared to direct-facing task lamps during extended computer work or evening reading. The Coffee finish reads warmest for creative-space register; Black reads most modern-graphic.
Application 05
Entryway consoles & foyers.
Small on entryway console tables for warm welcome; Large on generous foyer console tables for design-forward statement. The mushroom-dome silhouette signals mid-century-modern interior register from the moment guests enter.
Application 06 · commercial
Boutique hospitality & hotel guest rooms.
Boutique-hotel guest room bedside tables (Small), lobby reception counters (Large), and hospitality reading lounges where the Castiglioni-inspired mushroom-dome vocabulary reads as considered upscale interior specification. Multi-unit installations produce visual signature consistency.
Setup
A three-step decision at checkout.
1
Small or Large?
Small (⌀ 14.7" × H 19.1") — for bedside tables, standard side tables, entryway consoles, home-office desks, dressing vanities. The versatile everyday choice. Large (⌀ 19.5" × H 25.4") — for generous console tables, dining-room buffets, boutique hospitality, and rooms where the mushroom-dome silhouette should command sculptural attention. The statement choice. Both sizes share identical mechanism, materials, and finish options; only overall scale differs.
2
Black, Silver, or Coffee?
Black — graphic matte modern-contemporary; the most design-forward choice. Silver — polished mid-century-authentic; echoes the original 1962 Italian mushroom-lamp vocabulary. Coffee — warm brown; correct for interiors with dark wood, oxblood leather, or English-library moody register.

Craft
Fluted aluminum. Polished reflector. Hand-blown glass.
Every Cupola is assembled from three primary components. The fluted aluminum column is precision-machined with vertical grooves running the full column height — the grooves catch ambient room light along the base, giving the column visual rhythm and depth even when the bulb is off. Electroplated finish (Black, Silver, or Coffee) is chosen for corrosion resistance, colour stability under sustained bulb heat, and durability against daily contact. The reflector bowl is precision-formed metal with glossy white interior coating — the coating is calibrated to maximize light reflection back downward while distributing that light evenly across the glass dome above (no hotspots, no dark zones). Heat-tolerant for sustained 40W bulb operation. The mushroom dome is hand-blown transparent glass with subtle opacity engineered into the material — enough to diffuse the reflected light softly into the room, not enough to dim its output.
Power delivery is via a 59" (150 cm) cord with in-line push-button switch — press once to turn on, press again to turn off. Compatible with AC 110-240V household current via your selected plug type. The included warm-white LED bulb (E26 for US, E27 for EU/UK/AU, 2700K, non-dimmable) is pre-fitted and ready to use. Compatible with dimmable warm-white LED upgrades + triac wall dimmer for adjustable brightness (bulb and dimmer sold separately). Maximum 40W per socket.

Questions
Is this an authenticated Flos Taccia reissue? ◠
No. The Flos Taccia Lamp is a specific fixture designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1962 and manufactured by Flos under exclusive license from the Castiglioni estate — those pieces feature specific proprietary material specifications and construction methods. The Cupola is our own independent interpretation drawing on the broader 1962 mid-century Italian mushroom-dome vernacular that the Castiglioni original helped establish. It uses different aluminum alloy and glass composition than the Flos original, and is offered at different finish and size options. It is not marketed as a Flos reissue and is not authorized under the Castiglioni estate. If you are seeking an authenticated Flos Taccia specifically, we recommend consulting Flos authorized retailers directly.
About the included bulb — and can I upgrade? ◠
Bulb included. Every Cupola ships with a standard non-dimmable warm-white LED bulb pre-fitted in the E26 (US) or E27 (EU/UK/AU) socket, calibrated to 2700K for correct warm-glow character through the mushroom dome. Plug into the wall, press the inline switch, and the lamp works — no separate bulb purchase required. If you want to upgrade: the socket accepts any standard E26 (US) or E27 (EU/UK/AU) bulb. For dimming, swap in a dimmable warm-white LED. For vintage-authentic character, an Edison filament bulb (LED or classic tungsten) provides amber warm tones. Widely available at Home Depot, IKEA, Amazon, and any lighting retailer. Maximum 40W per socket.
Which size should I choose for my space? ◠
Small (⌀ 14.7" × H 19.1") — the versatile everyday choice. Correct for bedside nightstands (18"+ wide), standard side and end tables, entryway consoles, home-office desks, and dressing vanities. Sized to complement the surface rather than dominate it. Large (⌀ 19.5" × H 25.4") — the statement choice. Correct for generous console tables, dining-room buffet sideboards, hospitality reception counters, and rooms where the mushroom-dome silhouette should read as the primary sculptural focus. Approximately 30% larger footprint and 33% taller than the Small — commands attention rather than complements. If your surface is between 18-30" wide, the Small fits comfortably; over 30" wide, the Large scales better proportionally.
Why does the bulb face upward? ◠
This is the fixture's defining engineering principle. The upward-facing bulb aims its output into the polished reflector bowl above, which then redirects the light downward through the transparent glass mushroom dome. The result is soft indirect ambient glow rather than direct-facing bulb glare — the bulb itself is never visible from normal viewing angles, and the light quality is significantly more atmospheric than typical downward-facing shade lamps produce. Particularly appreciated by light-sensitive readers, sleepers with shared bedrooms, and anyone specifying atmospheric evening lighting over harsh task lighting.
Can I rotate or adjust the glass dome? ◠
Yes — the glass mushroom dome is loose-fitted onto the reflector bowl rather than fixed. Gently rotate it to slightly adjust the direction of the diffused light, or lift it off entirely for reflected-light-only mode. Important safety note: never touch the glass while the bulb is on or recently turned off — the dome catches significant heat from the reflector bowl beneath, and can burn on contact. Wait 20-30 minutes after switching off before adjusting the dome position.
Can I dim the lamp? ◠
Yes with the correct combination. The pre-fitted bulb is non-dimmable, and the inline switch on the cord operates as on/off only. For dimming, swap the included bulb for a dimmable E26 (US) or E27 (EU/UK/AU) warm-white LED bulb (widely available; check package for "dimmable" label), and plug the lamp into a wall outlet controlled by a triac-compatible wall dimmer (Lutron Diva and Caseta triac dimmers are known LED-compatible). At 40-60% brightness the indirect-glow effect reads at its most atmospheric register — particularly effective for evening ambient use.
How do I clean and maintain the fixture? ◠
Fluted aluminum column: wipe with soft dry microfibre cloth for regular dust. For fingerprints or stubborn marks, slightly damp microfibre with mild dish soap solution then dry immediately. Vertical grooves may require a soft brush for thorough dust removal. Avoid abrasive cleaners, ammonia-based products, or acetone. Reflector bowl: allow to fully cool (30+ minutes after switching off), then wipe glossy interior with clean dry microfibre — avoid harsh cleaners that could damage the reflective coating. Glass mushroom dome: allow to fully cool, then wipe with dry microfibre. For visible smudges, slightly damp cloth with mild soap solution then dry. Do not use ammonia glass cleaners (may leave residue affecting light quality).
How much heat does the fixture produce? ◠
With the included non-dimmable warm-white LED bulb (approximately 6-8W LED equivalent to 40W incandescent), heat production is minimal — the reflector bowl and glass dome warm noticeably but not to burn-hazard temperatures. If you upgrade to an incandescent Edison filament bulb (40W maximum), heat production increases significantly and the glass dome will reach hot-to-touch temperatures during extended operation. Never operate for extended unattended periods with filament bulbs, and always allow full cool-down time before adjusting the glass dome position. LED bulbs are strongly recommended for safe extended operation, particularly in bedroom and reading-corner applications.
Trade programs and hospitality installations? ◠
Yes — the Cupola is a specified fixture for boutique-hotel guest room bedside tables (Small), lobby reception counters (Large), hospitality reading lounges, and multi-unit residential projects where the mid-century-modern mushroom-dome vocabulary reads as considered upscale interior specification. Multi-fixture installations across coordinated guest rooms produce consistent Castiglioni-inspired visual signature. Trade programs available; matched-batch finish coordination for multi-fixture installations; project management for larger orders; bulk pricing for orders of 20+ units. Production lead times run 4-6 weeks. Write to support@stuberlighting.com with your project brief — quantity, size mix (Small/Large), finish mix (Black/Silver/Coffee), plug region, installation locations, and target timeline.
