Hand-torn mulberry paper layered into a sculptural tower. Ancient Chigiri-e technique.

The Chigiri Floor Lamp elevates your sanctuary with the ethereal glow of hand-torn artistry. Imagine the soft radiance of a setting sun captured within a towering organic sculpture, instantly melting away the day's stress as it fills your room. The Chigiri is a masterpiece of texture — utilizing the ancient Chigiri-e technique where artisans hand-tear and layer mulberry paper to create a rich multi-dimensional surface unlike anything mass production can replicate.

It doesn't just illuminate your home — it breathes Zen serenity and architectural elegance into your living space, turning every corner into a curated retreat of light and shadow. The 17.7" diameter and 46.5" height place it as a substantial floor-anchoring statement piece; the 11 lb weight ensures stable placement on any flat floor surface.

01

Ancient Chigiri-e hand-tearing technique

The defining feature — Chigiri-e is the centuries-old Japanese paper art of hand-tearing rather than cutting. Artisans tear each piece of mulberry paper by hand, then layer the torn pieces to build a richly textured multi-dimensional surface. The result is impossible to replicate by machine — every torn edge is unique, every layered piece slightly different. This is paper art at its most authentic.

02

Sculptural tower silhouette at floor scale

17.7" diameter × 46.5" height creates a substantial floor-anchoring sculptural presence. The proportions place the Chigiri between table-lamp scale and full-tall floor-lamp scale — a substantial statement piece that fills corner space without overwhelming room volume. The towering organic form draws the eye while the textured surface adds tactile interest at close range.

03

Hand-glued layered Washi paper construction

Each torn piece of mulberry Washi paper is hand-glued in layered overlapping patterns by skilled artisans. The multi-layer construction produces depth and dimension — light passes through different paper thicknesses creating subtle variations in glow intensity across the surface. The torn edges catch light differently than smooth-cut edges, producing organic textural shadow play.

04

Matte black iron base · plug-in · bulb included

Anchored on a matte black iron base — graphic dark contrast against the warm torn-paper shade. Plug-in installation, no electrician required. 59" cord with in-line ON/OFF button switch. Ships with 3000K warm-white bulb included. Compatible with any dimmable E26/E27 bulb.

Light as sculpture, tradition as texture

At Stuberlighting, we believe light should be felt, not just seen. The Chigiri Series is a tribute to the Slow Craft movement — every torn edge, every layered piece, every overlap formed by skilled artisan hands rather than machinery. Chigiri-e dates back centuries in Japanese paper art, traditionally used in scrolls and screens; we've brought it to lighting as a way to honor the rugged organic beauty that hand-tearing creates. Unlike mass-produced plastic lamps that look identical the day they ship and the year after, the Chigiri develops character with time. The genuine Washi paper ages gracefully; the torn texture catches light differently as the paper warms with use. This is the lamp for the home that values authentic craft over assembled efficiency.

Where the Chigiri stands best

Living room focal point — place beside a low-profile sofa or in an empty corner to instantly add architectural depth and warm inviting glow for evening gatherings; the textured surface reads as deliberate craft sculpture.

Bedroom sanctuary corner — perfect for substantial bedside positioning or vanity-corner placement; the diffused light mimics the sun's transition, helping unwind for restful sleep.

Reading nook or quiet corner — the warm glare-free Washi diffusion is ideal for extended reading sessions; the sculptural form makes the corner itself a destination rather than wasted space.

Boutique spa, yoga studio, or home office — the calm focused aesthetic suits professional Zen spaces where high-end materials matter; the Chigiri-e texture communicates considered craft to discerning visitors.

Japandi, Wabi-Sabi, Scandinavian, or modernist interiors — the hand-torn paper craft fits interiors that prize authentic organic texture over machine-perfect surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Chigiri-e and how does it differ from regular Washi paper? +

Chigiri-e (千切り絵, "torn picture") is a centuries-old Japanese paper art technique where artisans hand-tear paper rather than cutting it, then layer the torn pieces to build textured surfaces. Traditional Washi paper lamps (like our other Akari series) use smooth-stretched paper for uniform diffusion; Chigiri uses torn and layered paper for multi-dimensional texture. The torn edges catch light differently than smooth edges, producing organic textural shadow play that smooth-paper lamps cannot match. Choose Chigiri when you want hand-craft authenticity and textural depth; choose smooth Akari series when you want uniform glow.

How does the Chigiri compare to other floor lamps in your family? +

Several Washi paper floor lamps in our family. The Akari 10A (19.7" × 49") is the entry mid-scale smooth-paper tripod lamp. The Akari 23N (29.5" × 43.3") is the substantial pear-shape floor anchor. The Akari UF4-L9 (20.5" × 74") is our 6-foot tall cocoon-silhouette statement piece. The Chigiri (this fixture, 17.7" × 46.5") is unique — the only floor lamp in our family with hand-torn Chigiri-e textured paper instead of smooth shade construction. Choose Chigiri when texture and hand-craft authenticity matter most; choose Akari series when you want smooth uniform Washi diffusion.

How do I care for the hand-torn Chigiri Washi shade? +

Dust gently with a soft feather duster or microfiber cloth — brush in one consistent direction along the torn-paper layers rather than scrubbing back and forth, to preserve the textural integrity. Do not wet-clean, steam, spray with cleaners, or use damp cloths; water permanently stains and warps Washi paper, especially noticeable on the layered Chigiri-e surface. Avoid touching the paper directly to prevent fingerprint oils. The torn texture is part of the lamp's signature character — slight variations between individual lamps are intentional. With basic monthly dusting, the paper maintains its appearance for many years; slight ambering over time is natural.

For the warmest paper-glow effect, use 2700K-3000K LED or filament bulbs with high color rendering (CRI/Ra > 90). Cooler bulbs flatten the paper's natural amber undertone and reduce the textural shadow play.

Each piece is handmade by artisans using Chigiri-e hand-tearing technique — significant variations between individual lamps in torn-paper texture, layering patterns, and exact dimensions are part of the authentic Slow Craft character.

Safety tested for indoor use in dry locations. Meets technical requirements for North American residential lighting installations.
