The weighted base is engineered heavy enough to counterbalance the arc's cantilever load and hold the fixture stable through daily use — the fixture will not tip when you brush against it or when someone reaches under the arc. That said, this is a floor-standing fixture with a 47.2" horizontal arc reach, so certain scenarios do warrant caution: avoid installing where small children can pull on the arc or the shade, avoid installing where large dogs may bump the arc directly, and do not attempt to lift the fixture by the arc or shade (lift by the base column).
