The Akari L8 is a 63-inch tall pendant built around an accordion-pleated paper silhouette — hand-folded mulberry Washi paper formed into rhythmic accordion ridges down the full height of the column. Where our other tall pendants use smooth or stacked silhouettes, the L8's defining feature is its pleated origami geometry: dozens of crisp folds catching and shaping light differently at each ridge, producing a rhythmic textural glow rather than a smooth diffusion. The result is a fixture that reads as architectural origami at full vertical scale.
At 5 feet 3 inches long and 15 inches across, the L8 is engineered for vertical command — purpose-built for two-story foyers, vaulted living rooms, modernist staircase voids, and double-height entries. The pleated form catches more light than a smooth column would; the textural surface keeps the eye engaged at close range and from across the room.
Accordion-pleated origami silhouette
The defining feature — rhythmic accordion folds down the full 63-inch height, rather than a smooth or stacked column. Each pleat catches and shapes light slightly differently, producing a textural glow that smooth-surface fixtures cannot deliver. How does the L8 compare to our other tall Washi pendants? +
Three tall pendants in similar height range, three different silhouettes. The E Series (41-106") offers smooth tapered columns — clean elegant verticality at six different scales. The 31N Extra Long (13" × 62.2") is a pure cylinder — geometric and continuous. The L8 (this fixture, 15" × 63") is the only accordion-pleated origami silhouette — rhythmic folded texture rather than smooth or geometric. Choose L8 when you want the textural origami character; choose E Series for clean smooth columns at varied sizes; choose 31N for pure cylindrical geometry. All three are tall-pendant choices for vaulted and double-height spaces.
Does the 63" length require special installation? +
Professional installation is strongly recommended. Two specific considerations: the ceiling junction box must be rated for hardwired pendant installations and located in a structural ceiling element (not just drywall); and for staircase or double-height installations, the cord length may need to be extended beyond the standard 59" — request your desired total drop in order notes and we'll prepare the appropriate cord at no extra cost. The L8 is most effective when mounted high enough that the bottom of the fixture sits at approximately eye-level from the upper viewing position (top of stairs or second floor landing) — your electrician can advise on the best junction box position based on your room geometry.
How do I clean the accordion-pleated paper? +
The pleated form has more dust-catching surface area than smooth pendants — pay particular attention to dust accumulation in the accordion valleys. Use a soft long-handled feather duster or microfiber wand for the height; brush gently along the ridge direction (not across it) to avoid catching the pleats. Do not wet-clean, steam, spray with cleaners, or use damp cloths; water permanently stains and warps Washi paper. Place away from humid environments and direct heat sources. With basic monthly dusting, the paper maintains its appearance for many years; slight ambering over time is natural and part of the material's character.
For the warmest paper-glow effect, use 2700K-3000K LED or filament bulbs with high color rendering (CRI/Ra > 90). Cooler bulbs flatten the paper's natural amber undertone and reduce the textural pleat play of light and shadow.
Each piece is hand-folded by artisans — slight variations in pleat alignment, paper texture, and exact dimensions are part of the authentic origami craft character, making each L8 truly one-of-a-kind.
