A tall vertical Washi paper sculpture, suspended.

The Akari Juni Pendant Lamp is the most dramatic silhouette in our Washi paper family — a tall vertical paper sculpture nearly twice as tall as it is wide. Where our sphere and disc series spread horizontally, the Juni elongates vertically, producing a fixture that reads as a suspended column of light rather than a hanging lantern. The proportions are roughly 1.8:1 (height to diameter), giving the Juni an architectural drama that none of our other Akari shapes can match.

At 17.7" diameter and 32.6" tall, the Juni is sized for spaces that can accommodate vertical presence — open-plan living rooms with 9-10ft+ ceilings, two-story foyers, double-height entries, vaulted dining rooms, and modernist interiors where a sculptural light fixture earns its visual weight. Hand-folded authentic Washi paper over a bamboo frame; ships with a 3000K warm-white bulb included.

01

Tall vertical silhouette — sculptural drama

Height nearly doubles diameter — the most vertical pendant in our Akari family. This proportion creates architectural drama that horizontal pendants cannot match. The Juni doesn't hang from the ceiling so much as descend from it, reading as a column of light rather than a lamp.

02

Hand-folded thickened Washi paper

Premium thickened mulberry Washi paper, hand-folded by skilled artisans — denser than tissue-grade alternatives, which means the paper retains its pristine off-white color rather than yellowing over years of use. The fold pattern catches and softens light into a glare-free warm glow.

03

Bamboo and metal internal frame

Internal sustainably sourced bamboo ribbing combined with metal support gives the Juni structural elegance — the tall vertical form requires more rigid internal architecture than horizontal pendants to maintain its silhouette over years of use.

04

Bulb included · dimmable with compatible bulb

Ships with a 3000K warm-white bulb included. Sleek black 59" cord; extendable on request for vaulted ceilings. Compatible with any dimmable E26 LED or filament bulb for full brightness control through a standard wall dimmer.

The pendant for rooms that can carry vertical drama

Most paper pendants are horizontal — they hang low and wide, filling overhead space rather than vertical space. The Juni takes the opposite approach. It descends. The taller silhouette suits the kind of rooms that have something to hide vertically — too much empty wall above the dining table, too tall an entryway feeling cold and unfilled, a double-height living room that horizontal pendants get lost in. The Juni fills that vertical space gracefully, with architectural intentionality rather than excess. It is the Akari for the modernist home, the loft, the renovated industrial space, the contemporary interior that wants Japanese minimalism with dramatic scale rather than quiet restraint.

Where the Akari Juni hangs best

Open-plan living room with 9-10ft+ ceilings — the vertical scale fills tall rooms that horizontal pendants get lost in; works as the central architectural light fixture for modernist living rooms.

Two-story foyer or grand entryway — the long silhouette descends gracefully from high ceilings; visible from both floors of a staircase; warm welcome at the front of the house.

Dining room with vaulted or 10ft+ ceilings — the Juni hangs above dining tables with vertical drama that anchors high-ceiling dining rooms; reads as sculptural focal point rather than utility.

Bedroom centered above the foot of the bed (with 9ft+ ceilings) — the vertical paper column becomes a meditative element in the room you sleep in; soft warm glow ideal for evening ambiance.

Loft, renovated industrial space, or modernist interior — the dramatic proportions suit contemporary spaces that want Japanese minimalism with statement scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Juni work in 8-foot ceilings? +

Possibly, but we typically recommend 9-foot ceilings or higher for the Juni. At 32.6" tall plus the canopy and a short minimum drop, the Juni occupies roughly 36-40 inches of vertical space when installed. In an 8-foot ceiling room (96 inches), this leaves about 56-60 inches of clearance below the lamp — fine for most furniture but tight for tall people walking under the lamp. If you have 8-foot ceilings and want a Washi paper pendant, our Akari A Series (the flat-disc silhouette) is specifically designed for low standard ceilings. For 9-10ft+ ceilings and vaulted spaces, the Juni shines.

How does Juni compare to other Akari silhouettes? +

Same authentic Washi paper, same bamboo craftsmanship, but Juni is the only vertical silhouette in our family. The Sphere Series is perfectly round (height = diameter). The D Series is a slightly flattened sphere. The EN Series is an elliptical saucer. The A Series is a dramatically flat disc. The Juni (this fixture) is dramatically tall — height nearly doubles diameter. Choose Juni when you want vertical architectural drama in a tall-ceiling space; choose other silhouettes when you want horizontal presence or low-ceiling fit. Juni is the most sculptural option; the other shapes are more lantern-like.

How do I care for and clean Washi paper? +

Dust gently with a soft feather duster or microfiber cloth — that's it. Do not wet-clean, steam, spray with cleaners, or use damp cloths; water permanently stains and warps Washi paper. Avoid hanging in humid environments (bathrooms, kitchen areas with stovetop steam) and away from direct heat sources (radiators, fireplaces). The premium thickened Washi paper used in the Juni resists yellowing better than tissue-grade alternatives, but it still benefits from gentle handling. With basic monthly dusting, the paper maintains its appearance for many years.

For the warmest paper-glow effect, use 2700K-3000K LED or filament bulbs with high color rendering (CRI/Ra > 90). Cooler bulbs flatten the paper's natural amber undertone.

Each piece is handmade by artisans — slight variations between individual fixtures in paper texture, fold pattern, and exact dimensions are part of the authentic hand-craft character.

Safety tested for indoor use in dry locations. Meets technical requirements for North American residential lighting installations.
