An elliptical Washi paper saucer. Architectural calm, suspended.

The Akari EN Series Washi Paper Pendant is an elliptical saucer pendant — a refined middle path between our perfectly round Sphere Series and our dramatically flat A Series. The proportions are roughly 2:1 (diameter to height) — wide enough to read horizontal and architectural, tall enough to retain a sculptural three-dimensional presence rather than disappearing into the ceiling. The result is a pendant that adds a modern, sculptural layer to your ceiling without occupying excessive vertical space — the most refined silhouette in our Akari family.

Three sizes: 50EN (19.6") for bedside, small home offices, and intimate rooms; 70EN (27.5") for standard dining tables and living rooms; 95EN (37.4") for grand entryways, lofts, and statement installations. Hand-stretched authentic Washi paper over a custom bamboo frame — the same craftsmanship across every size.

01

Refined elliptical silhouette

The 2:1 diameter-to-height ratio is intentional — wide enough to read horizontal and architectural, tall enough to retain a sculptural presence. The elliptical profile is harder to engineer than either a sphere or a flat disc, and the result is a silhouette you do not find anywhere else in mass-produced lighting.

02

Hand-stretched authentic Washi paper

Real mulberry-fiber Washi paper, hand-stretched over each frame by skilled artisans. Premium dense paper diffuses harsh bulb light into a glare-free warm glow with flawless precision. Slight variations between individual pieces are part of the authentic hand-craft character.

03

Custom bamboo frame

The elliptical form requires a custom bamboo frame — not the standard round ribbing used in sphere pendants. The internal structure is calibrated specifically for the EN silhouette, producing a stable horizontal pendant that holds its form for years rather than warping or sagging.

04

Bulb included · dimmable with compatible bulb

Ships with a 3000K warm-white bulb included. Compatible with any dimmable E26 LED or filament bulb if you want full brightness control through a standard wall dimmer. Plug-in conversion available on request.

The refined choice in our Akari family

Our Akari paper lantern family now spans four silhouettes — Sphere (perfectly round), D Series (slightly flattened sphere), EN Series (elliptical saucer), and A Series (dramatically flat disc). Each silhouette suits a different room, but the EN Series occupies the most versatile position. It works under 8-foot ceilings without crowding, sits proportionally in 10-foot rooms, and reads as a refined statement in vaulted spaces. Its proportions feel intentional in a way that pure spheres can feel obvious and pure discs can feel utilitarian. If you only buy one Akari pendant and want it to work everywhere, this is the silhouette to choose.

Where the EN Series hangs best

Bedside or small home office (50EN · 19.6") — sized to read as considered rather than dominant; the elliptical profile sits gracefully above nightstands and small desks.

Standard dining table (70EN · 27.5") — the most popular configuration; works above round, square, and rectangular tables 48"-72" wide; the soft amber glow turns dinners into atmospheric occasions.

Living room as central pendant (70EN · 27.5") — paper sphere as the room's warm anchor; complements modern furniture and traditional interiors equally well.

Grand entryway or two-story foyer (95EN · 37.4") — oversized statement that reads as art rather than utility; the elliptical scale fills the visual space without the rigid presence of a chandelier.

Loft, open-plan, or hospitality space (95EN · 37.4") — the horizontal scale suits wide open rooms that tall pendants struggle to anchor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does EN compare to other Akari silhouettes? +

Same Washi paper, same bamboo craftsmanship, four different silhouettes. The Sphere Series is perfectly round — most vertical presence. The D Series is a slightly flattened sphere — diameter exceeds height by 10-15%. The EN Series (this fixture) is an elliptical saucer — diameter exceeds height by roughly 2:1, the most refined and versatile silhouette. The A Series is a dramatically flat disc — diameter exceeds height by 2-3×, designed specifically for 8ft ceilings. Choose EN when you want a balance of horizontal architectural presence and sculptural three-dimensionality; choose A for the lowest ceilings; choose Sphere or D for taller rooms.

Which size for my dining table or living room? +

For dining tables, the pendant should be roughly half to two-thirds of the table's longest dimension. 50EN (19.6") suits small intimate tables (36-42" wide) or bedside placement. 70EN (27.5") is our most-ordered size — works above round or rectangular dining tables 48"-72" wide, and as a central pendant in 12ft × 14ft to 14ft × 18ft living rooms. 95EN (37.4") is for grand spaces — large dining tables 72"+ wide, double-height foyers, lofts, and open-plan living areas where the smaller sizes would feel undersized. When in doubt, choose the larger — undersized fixtures consistently feel underwhelming.

How do I care for and clean Washi paper? +

Dust gently with a soft feather duster or microfiber cloth — that's it. Do not wet-clean, steam, spray with cleaners, or use damp cloths; water permanently stains and warps Washi paper. Avoid hanging in humid environments (bathrooms, kitchen areas with stovetop steam) and away from direct heat sources (radiators, fireplaces). With basic monthly dusting, the paper maintains its appearance for many years; slight ambering over time is natural and considered part of the material's character.

For the warmest paper-glow effect, use 2700K-3000K LED or filament bulbs with high color rendering (CRI/Ra > 90). Cooler bulbs flatten the paper's natural amber undertone.

Each piece is handmade by artisans — slight variations between individual fixtures in paper texture, frame geometry, and exact dimensions are part of the authentic hand-craft character.

Safety tested for indoor use in dry locations. Meets technical requirements for North American residential lighting installations.

The Art of Light and Paper

More than a source of illumination, each piece is a sculptural presence within the room.

Our Sculptural Paper Lantern Collection brings together softly curved silhouettes, delicate paper textures and warm diffused light. Inspired by the simplicity of Japanese design and the expressive character of handcrafted objects, every lamp is created to feel calm, natural and timeless.

When illuminated, the layered paper gently softens the light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. When switched off, its organic silhouette remains a quiet piece of art.

Natural Texture, Gentle Illumination

The finely textured paper allows light to pass through softly rather than shine directly into the room. Its layered surface creates subtle variations in brightness, giving the lamp a warm, atmospheric glow.
