The Akari 5X is a sculptural table lamp built around an iconic pyramid silhouette — hand-stretched mulberry Washi paper over a delicate bamboo and metal frame, with the geometry of a meditation cairn. Where most paper table lamps are round or oval, the 5X reads as architectural geometry: clean angled lines, low wide proportions, the sense of a small piece of considered sculpture rather than an accessory. The pyramid form diffuses light evenly across all four faces, producing a soft amber glow that softens the harsh edges of modern life.
At 12.2" diameter and 14.9" tall, the 5X sits comfortably on bedside nightstands, study desks, console tables, and side tables. How does 5X compare to the Akari 1A table lamp? +
Same authentic Washi paper, same craft tradition, different silhouettes and footprints. The Akari 1A is a vertical egg-shape on a black metal tripod base — 10.2" diameter × 16.9" tall, more lantern-like, with the tripod as graphic contrast. The 5X (this fixture) is a wide pyramid sitting closer to the table surface — 12.2" diameter × 14.9" tall, more architectural, with cleaner geometric lines. Choose 1A when you want vertical lantern presence and you have a tripod-friendly tableau; choose 5X when you want grounded geometric sculpture and you want a stable wide base. Many customers buy both — 1A for the bedside, 5X for the study or living room.
What kind of bulb works best? +
For the warmest paper-glow effect, use a 2700K-3000K LED filament bulb with high color rendering (CRI/Ra > 90). High-CRI bulbs bring out the natural amber tones of the Washi paper and produce noticeably more atmospheric light than standard bulbs. The 5X accepts E26 bulbs up to 60W. Avoid cooler bulbs (4000K+) — they flatten the paper's natural amber undertone and shift the glow toward gray, defeating the whole point of the lamp. The lamp's button switch is non-dimmable; for dimming control, pair with a dimmable bulb and an in-line cord dimmer, or use a smart bulb with phone control.
How do I care for the Washi paper shade? +
Dust gently with a soft feather duster or microfiber cloth — that's it. Pay attention to the pyramid edges where dust can accumulate along the angled corners. Do not wet-clean, steam, spray with cleaners, or use damp cloths; water permanently stains and warps Washi paper. Place the lamp away from humid environments and away from direct heat sources. With basic monthly dusting, the paper maintains its appearance for many years; slight ambering over time is natural and considered part of the material's character — Washi paper ages gracefully rather than degrading.
