— AKARI / VB SERIES —
A vertical bottle of light,
five and a half feet tall.
A handmade washi paper floor lamp in the Akari 14A vertical bottle silhouette — designed for the narrow spaces where most floor lamps don't fit and reading corners that want softer light than their lamp shades are giving them.

In 1951, the Japanese-American sculptor Isamu Noguchi traveled to the city of Gifu in central Japan, where local paper craftsmen had been making chōchin lanterns from washi paper and bamboo for centuries. He spent several weeks redesigning the traditional lantern as a modern sculptural object, working with the third-generation lantern maker Ozeki Sangyo to create the first Akari light. The series eventually grew to over 100 different shapes — wide saucers and tall columns, fat spheres and elongated bottles — each numbered, each made the same way the original chōchin lanterns were made: bamboo ribs, washi paper, by hand.
The Akari 14A is the vertical bottle silhouette — narrow at top and base, slightly fuller in the middle, standing 63.7 inches tall on a slim metal stand. It's one of the most enduring shapes in the Akari floor lamp catalog because the proportions work everywhere — narrow enough for a sofa corner, tall enough to anchor a reading nook, sculptural enough to stand alone in an empty room.
Bulbs included. Built to UL safety standards. Each shade is hand-pasted in Japan from washi paper over bamboo ribs — small variations are the natural signature of handcraft, not manufacturing flaws.

How the 14A is made
01
Bamboo ribs · the skeleton
Each shade begins as a spiral of split bamboo strips, formed by hand around a wooden mold to create the bottle silhouette. The bamboo provides the structure that lets the lamp hold its shape over decades — and it remains visible from inside the shade when lit, casting the soft horizontal shadows that are Akari's most recognizable visual signature.
02
Washi paper · the skin
Handmade Japanese washi paper from the mulberry tree's inner bark — a much longer fiber than Western paper, which makes washi simultaneously translucent and strong. The paper is pasted over the bamboo ribs in overlapping panels, and when illuminated from inside, it transmits a warm even glow that reads like candlelit Japanese architecture rather than electric residential lighting.
03
Slim metal stand · the base
The stand is a slim metal rod with a small footed base — proportioned to disappear visually beneath the paper shade. The whole fixture reads as if the floating paper bottle is the only object in the room; the structural base does its job and gets out of the way.

Plug-in · bulbs included · 4 plug options
Ships with E26 LED warm-white bulbs already installed. Inline cord switch for direct control. 78-inch cord (longer than most table lamp cords, designed for floor placement). Choose US, UK, EU, or AU plug at checkout for international installations.
— On the 14A silhouette —
"Narrow at the top, fuller through the body, narrow again at the base — the shape of a bottle that wants to stand up."
The 14A is part of the Akari VB series — "Vertical Bottle" — distinguished by its elongated profile that's narrower than the spherical Akari shapes and taller than the cocoon shapes. The proportions read architectural rather than ornamental, which is why the 14A works particularly well in spaces where a wider floor lamp would feel crowded.
At 13 inches in diameter and 63.7 inches tall, the 14A occupies a 1.69 square foot footprint — about half the floor space of a typical tripod floor lamp. The lamp fits comfortably in spaces where conventional floor lamps would block traffic or crowd furniture: between a sofa and a side table, beside a slim console, in the corner of a small reading nook.
— The Akari Collection —
One of 33 Akari shapes at Stuberlighting
The Akari 14A is one of 33 Akari designs in our catalog — covering table lamps (1A, 3A, 9A, VB-13T), pendants (Akari A Series, D Series, E Series, EN Series), and floor lamps (10A, 23N, 25N, UF series, and the 14A here). The shapes are designed to work together as a coherent system — pair the 14A with an Akari pendant overhead, or with an Akari 1A table lamp on a nearby surface.
For multi-Akari orders (table lamp + pendant + floor lamp combinations), email service@stuberlighting.com — we coordinate matched-batch washi paper for consistent tone across the room.
— Where it lives —
Recommended spaces
Living room corner — single placement
The 14A's narrow footprint fits beside or behind a sofa where a wider tripod floor lamp would crowd the space. The 63" height casts indirect light up and out, brightening the corner without point-source glare.
Bedroom corner — beside a chair or dresser
Tucked into a bedroom corner — beside a reading chair, behind a dresser, or in the space between two pieces of furniture. The warm washi glow at floor-lamp height creates the soft layered bedroom lighting that overhead fixtures cannot replicate.
Foyer / entryway — single statement
A single 14A as the entry's floor lamp creates the Japandi welcome-light that defines well-designed minimalist American foyers. The vertical proportion fills the empty wall space in entry corners.
Tea room or meditation space — single corner placement
For Japandi-leaning interiors, the 14A reads as a contemporary chōchin lantern — soft warm glow, minimal hardware, sculptural object first and light source second. Works beautifully on tatami flooring or beside a low Japanese tea table.
Reading nook — beside a chair, no need for floor space
The 14A's slim profile lets it fit beside a reading chair where a wider lamp wouldn't. The 63.7" height puts the warm light source above the reader's head — comfortable for reading without producing the harsh direct illumination of a desk lamp.

Questions
What's the difference between Akari 14A and the other Akari floor lamps? +
Each Akari Model has a distinct silhouette. The 14A is the vertical bottle (VB) shape — narrow at top, fuller through the middle, narrow at base. Compared to other Akari floor lamps:
· Akari 10A — tripod base, wider conical shade
· Akari 23N — pear-shaped, wider through the bottom
· Akari 25N — three-tier stacked shape
· UF series — various sculptural and cocoon shapes
· 14A — slim vertical bottle, narrowest footprint among Akari floor lamps
The 14A is the best choice when floor space is tight or when you want the lamp's vertical proportion to dominate visually over its width.
How fragile is the washi paper? Will it last? +
Less fragile than you might think — washi paper uses long mulberry fibers that make it significantly stronger than Western paper. Properly cared for, an Akari shade lasts 10-30 years with no visible degradation; some original 1950s Akari lamps remain in active use today in homes and museums.
Care recommendations: Dust lightly with a soft brush or vacuum on lowest setting (with a brush attachment). Avoid wet cleaning, direct sunlight (which can yellow the paper over years), and high-humidity rooms (bathrooms, kitchens directly above stovetops). Don't place near pets that might knock the lamp over — the bamboo skeleton is sturdy but the paper is more vulnerable to puncture damage than glass shades.
Are bulbs included? Can I dim it? +
Yes — E26 LED warm-white bulbs are included (standard 2700K, non-dimmable). Plug in, switch on. No bulb shopping required.
For dimming, you'll need: (1) replace with dimmable E26 LED bulbs (Home Depot, Lowe's, Amazon), and (2) either plug into a wall outlet on a dimmer switch, or use a plug-in dimmer cord adapter ($15-25 at hardware stores). Dimming particularly enhances the Akari aesthetic in evening reading and meditation applications — the warm washi glow becomes even more intimate at lower brightness.
How tall is the 14A — and will it fit my ceiling? +
The 14A is 63.7 inches (5'3.7", or 162 cm) total height. Standard American residential ceilings are 96 inches (8 feet), so the 14A leaves over 32 inches of clearance above the lamp top — visually balanced even in low-ceiling rooms.
For ceilings shorter than 8 feet (some basements, attics, older homes), measure the available height carefully — but the 14A's 5'3.7" is shorter than many people's standing height, so it's unlikely to feel proportionally tall in normal residential spaces.
Can I pair this with other Akari lamps? +
Yes — the Akari collection was designed to work as a coherent system. Common pairings:
· 14A floor lamp + Akari pendant overhead (D Series sphere, E Series tall column, or A Series disc) for layered Japandi lighting in a living room or bedroom
· 14A floor lamp + Akari 1A or 3A table lamp on a nearby surface for tonal consistency
· 14A in a series with other Akari floor lamps (10A or 23N) for sculptural impact in larger rooms
For multi-Akari orders, email service@stuberlighting.com — we coordinate matched-batch washi paper across multiple fixtures.
— A note from us —
Each Akari 14A shade is hand-pasted from washi paper over bamboo ribs — small variations in paper tone, panel alignment, and rib spacing are the natural signature of handcraft. No two shades are exactly identical; this is the inherent quality of the material, not a manufacturing flaw.
For multi-Akari orders (table lamp + pendant + floor lamp combinations), email service@stuberlighting.com — we coordinate matched-batch washi paper to keep tonal consistency across multiple Akari fixtures in the same room.
Safety tested for indoor use in dry locations. Built to meet UL, ETL, CE, and SAA electrical safety standards for residential lighting installations.
