CEILING LIGHT · N°01 · AGAVE

A ceiling, in bloom.

Handmade glass leaves — shaped, textured with dewdrop patterning, and arrayed in the radial silhouette of an agave plant — set flush against the ceiling around a built-in warm-white LED. Three sizes for bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, and grand foyers. Optional remote-dimming for evening atmosphere without a wall dimmer.

I · The inspiration

Why agave.

The agave plant is one of nature's more architectural forms — a tight radial cluster of pointed leaves that spread from a central rosette, each leaf sculpted with a subtle central spine and thickened at the base. The shape is deliberately geometric; it reads as design rather than as ornament. It is also unusual in that it presents itself best from below — looking up into an agave, you see the full radial pattern spread against the sky.

This is exactly the visual condition of a ceiling light. Almost every ceiling fixture asks to be looked up at; almost every ceiling fixture struggles with the fact that its viewer sees only its underside. The Agave takes this constraint and makes it the design premise. Looking up at the fixture, you see the radial rosette of glass leaves in full — the way the plant was always meant to be seen. Nature solved this compositional problem long before lighting design did.

II · The texture

Glass, dewdrop-textured.

Each glass leaf is finished with a subtle dewdrop texture — dozens of shallow spherical impressions across the surface, applied while the glass is still hot from the furnace. The texture is technical rather than decorative in origin: dewdrop patterning diffuses light across the surface of the glass rather than transmitting it in straight lines, softening the LED's beam into an ambient glow rather than a directional spotlight.

Visually, the effect is unmistakable. Dewdrop-textured glass catches light at each impression, producing hundreds of small warm highlights scattered across the leaf surface — the way actual dew catches morning sunlight on a real agave. The fixture reads as luminous rather than as backlit; the ceiling around it takes on a subtle warm cast rather than the flat white pool that a smooth-glass fixture creates.

III · The light

Built-in. Fifty thousand hours.

The Agave uses an integrated LED module — no bulb sockets, no bulb replacements, no compatibility questions. The module is rated for 50,000 hours of operation, which is roughly seventeen years of normal residential use. This is a fixture you install once and don't think about again.

Two configurations are available. The standard configuration is a fixed 3000K warm-white — the classic residential temperature, no dimming, no controls beyond your existing wall switch. The remote-dimming configuration adds a hand-held remote for full brightness-range control without a wall dimmer — useful for bedrooms where you want atmospheric brightness in the evening, and for existing installations where wall-dimmer wiring would require an electrician revisit.

3000K fixed

Standard configuration

Fixed 3000K warm-white output. Controlled by your existing wall switch. Simplest specification; correct for spaces where the light is either on or off — dining rooms, kitchens, hallways, foyers, guest bedrooms.

Remote-dimming

+$30 across all sizes

Hand-held remote for full-range dimming without a wall dimmer. Correct for primary bedrooms, primary living rooms, and any space where atmospheric evening brightness matters. Also useful for retrofit installations where existing wall wiring is fixed.

IV · The sizes

Three, scaled to real rooms.

All three sizes share the same 7.9-inch profile height — deliberately low so the Agave sits flush enough for 8-foot ceilings without loss of headroom. The diameter is what varies with size, and the correct diameter depends on the room the fixture is going into.

Small 23.6"⌀ × 7.9"H Bedrooms · guest rooms · hallways · standard foyers
Medium 27.6"⌀ × 7.9"H Primary bedrooms · kitchens · standard living rooms · dining rooms
Large 35.4"⌀ × 7.9"H Grand living rooms · large primary bedrooms · statement foyers · hospitality

The 7.9-inch profile works with any ceiling from 8 feet upward. For low 7-foot residential ceilings, choose the Small — the extra clearance matters. For high-ceilinged rooms (10+ feet), the Large reads correctly to scale.

V · The detail

Considered, throughout.

No bulbs to buy.

The integrated LED module is factory-installed — no bulb sockets, no visits to hardware stores, no compatibility questions between fixture and bulb brand. If the module ever needs service (unlikely within its 50,000-hour rating), the fixture is field-serviceable by a licensed electrician.

Metal frame, understated.

The frame is a slim metal ring that supports the glass leaves at their base and holds the LED module at its centre. Finished in a neutral warm-grey that reads as background to the glass rather than as competing hardware, letting the leaf form and dewdrop texture be the visual event.

Flush installation.

Standard ceiling junction-box installation — no chain, no extended rod, no complex drop. Mounts flush against the ceiling; the 7.9-inch profile is the fixture's full clearance. Licensed electrician required for wiring; the box itself is standard residential specification.

Individual variation.

Each glass leaf is hand-shaped and hand-textured, one at a time — subtle variations in curve, thickness, and dewdrop pattern density remain by design. Your Agave will be subtly different from photographs and from every other Agave produced. This is the material's signature.

VI · Where it belongs

Rooms with a ceiling that matters.

A primary bedroom — Medium in remote-dimming, centred over the bed. The dewdrop-textured glass diffuses light into a warm ambient wash rather than a directional beam, which is what bedrooms actually want from their ceiling fixture. Dim to 30% in the evening; full for cleaning and dressing.

A modern living room — Medium or Large depending on room scale, centred over the primary seating group. The Agave's radial botanical form adds a sculptural moment to rooms that would otherwise get a flat drum-shade — and the flush installation preserves ceiling clearance in rooms with standard 8-foot ceilings.

A dining room, kitchen, or breakfast room — Medium (3000K fixed) is the safe specification. The dewdrop texture is particularly effective under evening lighting when family or guests are around a table; the fixture reads as considered dinner-room lighting rather than utilitarian ceiling-mount.

A hallway or standard foyer — Small in 3000K fixed, over the entry threshold or hallway centre. Flush installation preserves head clearance; the botanical radial form gives the transition space a moment of visual interest rather than reading as pass-through utility.

VIII · Questions

3000K fixed or remote-dimming — which should I choose?

3000K fixed is correct for rooms where the light is either on or off — dining rooms, kitchens, hallways, standard foyers, guest bedrooms. Simple, reliable, controlled by your existing wall switch. Remote-dimming is correct for rooms where you want atmospheric evening brightness — primary bedrooms, primary living rooms, media rooms, any space where you'll want the fixture at 30% one moment and 100% the next. Also useful for retrofit installations where installing a wall dimmer would require pulling wire — the remote adds full dimming without the wall work. The $30 premium is worth it for primary bedrooms; for kitchens and hallways, the fixed configuration is what you actually want.

Which size for my room?

By room area: Small (23.6") for rooms up to 150 sq ft — bedrooms, hallways, standard foyers, guest rooms. Medium (27.6") for rooms 150–300 sq ft — primary bedrooms, standard living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens. Large (35.4") for rooms 300+ sq ft — grand living rooms, large primary bedrooms, statement foyers, open-plan spaces. All three sizes share the same 7.9-inch profile height, so ceiling clearance is not a factor in your size decision — only room area is. For 8-foot ceilings, all three sizes are appropriate; for lower 7-foot ceilings, favour Small or Medium.

What happens if the LED module fails?

The module is rated for 50,000 hours — approximately seventeen years at four hours of use per day, or twenty-eight years at two hours per day. Failure within that window is unusual but not impossible. If your module needs service, contact service@stuberlighting.com with your order details — we ship replacement modules to your licensed electrician, and the fixture is field-serviceable without removing the glass leaves. Two-year manufacturer warranty covers premature failure at no cost to you.

Will every leaf look exactly like the photos?

No — hand-shaped and hand-textured glass carries the trace of the person who made it. Each leaf varies subtly in curve, thickness, and dewdrop pattern density. Your Agave will be subtly different from photographs and from every other Agave produced. This is the material's signature; a machine-pressed fixture would look identical across every unit, which is not what handmade production produces. For projects requiring multiple matched fixtures (a coordinated bedroom + living-room pair, hospitality installations), coordinated matched-batch material is available — write to service@stuberlighting.com before ordering.

How do I clean it?

Routine: dust with a soft microfibre cloth every 2-3 months. The dewdrop texture catches dust slightly more than smooth glass; work gently and don't press hard on the impressions. Deeper cleaning: a soft cloth lightly dampened with warm water and a few drops of pH-neutral mild dish soap — wipe leaves gently one at a time, dry immediately with a separate dry microfibre. Never use ammonia-based glass cleaners, abrasive sponges, or paper towels (fibres catch in the dewdrop texture). Turn the power off at the breaker before cleaning to avoid electrical hazard.

Hospitality-scale orders?

Yes — the Agave is designed for both residential and commercial-scale specification. Hospitality installations (hotel lobbies, boutique-hotel bedrooms, restaurant private dining rooms, spa lounges) benefit from the fixture's low profile, integrated LED (no bulb-service cost across dozens of fixtures), and remote-dimming option for atmospheric evening use. Matched-batch glass, extended lead times for larger orders, and interior-designer trade pricing are available. Write to service@stuberlighting.com with your project brief — installation count, timeline, colour-temperature preference.

"Most ceiling lights are afterthoughts — the fixture you install when the ceiling has to have something. The Agave is designed for the opposite conversation: the fixture chosen because the ceiling deserves attention. Botanical form, hand-textured glass, atmospheric warm light — the ordinary requirements of a ceiling fixture met with the care of a considered object."
